Cantillon's Rose de Gambrinus is a delicious raspberry-inspired lambic, the result of an excellent base lambic and delicious ripe fruit. The result is a strongly sour, at times nearly puckering, beer that still retains its raspberry and lambic base flavors. Excellent, one I would seek out again.

Pours a 1.5cm tall bottle of light pink-colored foam, made up of small-sized bubbles, yielding a frothy appearance. Retention is about average for the style, the foam lasting a bit over one minute and fading to a thin cap atop the body of the beer for the duration of the session, thicker around the edges. Lacing is adequate, with a few dots clinging randomly along the sides of the glass. Body is a dark red-pink color, with light bringing out orange-pink-yellow hues. Carbonation visible through the hazy body, high in number and activity.

Aroma is of raspberry juice sweetness around the periphery, with strong acidity, and farmhouse-like scents (a bit of composting hay, mustiness, Brett-style "funk" - styrene?).

Front of palate tastes a strong mixture of fresh and dried raspberries with a bit of strawberry as well, isoamyl acetate, light tartness, and modest mustiness and composting hay. Mid-palate of very strong acidity leading to a powerful sourness blended with dried raspberry flavors; attendant other flavors are of composting hay, Brettanomyces funk, and mustiness. Back of palate is quite fruity, with strong flavors of sour raspberries, lesser light apple cider like acidity and associated strong tartness, and gentle background washes of Brettanomyces "funk" and mustiness. Aftertaste of strong basement mustiness, lingering raspberry esters, a bit of mineral flavor, and mild tartness.

Beer is medium to medium-light in body, with carbonation of medium intensity, leading to a lightly fizzy, then softly foamy mouthfeel that works for the style. Closes dryly, with medium-high stickiness clinging to the palate. (2,020 characters)

A - Blush link, no head/lacing.

S - Vinegar and mustard with a pinch of raspberry and a touch of baby diaper.

T - Much better than the nose, straight raspberry bubblegum with a nice acidity.

M - Drying light and refreshing

12oz capped and corked bottle (bottled 17 May 2013) poured into a Lindeman's flute. Slow pour to keep the sediment behind.

Appearance: Clear coppery red with a thin white head on top. Some occasional small islands of persistent lacing.

Smell: Raspberries, hint of fresh picked sweet berries, some mustiness. As it warms up there is some sweet malt under it all.

Taste: Very Tart! Raspberries, fresh squeezed lemon juice, just a hint of wood. Some bready malt in there, but it is fleeting. Crisp and sharp tartness at the finish as well.

Mouthfeel: Dry, airy carbonation, acidic juice attack on the teeth briefly and then its gone.

Overall / Drinkability: I'm going to hit drinkability first - I can finish a bottle but I wish I had paired it with a fruity dessert. One per night is enough. Overall, a mouth-puckering one of a kind beer, but I think I'm still acquiring the taste of sours and lambics. An interesting slow-sipper but I was not expecting this much tartness. Any more tart and it would not be drinkable, like it is calibrated to be right at the edge of tolerance to push you to a new taste, but not push you over the edge into disgust and inability to finish it. So I'll list this one as my current high limit on tart lambics I can tolerate and finish. A good milestone in my continuing exploration of beer. (1,330 characters)

A: Hazy but beautiful pink to ruby in color. Some light pink foam and a bit of retention.

S: Pretty funky and vinegary. More than I expected. Definitely get the raspberries although they're fainter that I had hoped.

T: Tart and fruity. Nice tingle with a pleasant finish. Man I want this fresh!!! But its nice that its not overly fruity and still very much beer.

M: Still some good carbonation and body. Great feel and flavor.

O: Glad this survived. Would love to taste this fresh but still a top notch Lambic. (542 characters)

Poured from a 11.2 oz bottle into a Cantillon Tulip. Bottled 27 May 2013. Thanks Eric for allowing me to try this!

A- Pours a slightly hazy, fizzy cherry colored body with a light pink, 2 finger head that reduces fairly quickly to leave little lacing. +.25 in this category for the label ;)

S- Upfront is some Belgian funk, citrus/lemon juice, tart berries, and a woody mustyness. The aromas become a lot more pronounced after 20 or so minutes of sitting.

T- Quite dry upfront, tart berries, fermented fruit, bready/yeasty, the finish is somewhat astringent with a slight bitterness reminiscent of citrus peel, followed by raspberry notes.

M- Pretty high carbonation, but light and refreshing on the tongue.

Cantillon never disappoints, and this beer is an example of why they brew the world's most authentic lambics. Very nice when drank fresh. Recommendable. (867 characters)

A 375 ml bottle, bottled 3 September 2013, poured into a Cantillon tumbler.

A: Really pretty deep rose red. Cloudy, almost opaque. Pours with a pink two-finger head that recedes very quickly leaving only a few tiny bubbles along the edge of the glass.
S: A lot of barnyard funk, and some sour raspberry. More of a raspberry scent about five minutes after pouring.
T: Tart raspberry flavor with some vinegar-like sourness. It has a nice, not overpowering tart puckery flavor. The almost-sour-cherry-like raspberry flavor at the back sticks around nicely.
M: Pretty much perfect, it's fairly light with just enough carbonation and body.
O: This is my first Cantillon (a Christmas present from my boyfriend Ljudsignal!), so, after hearing so much about all of their sours, I had pretty high expectations. Fortunately, Rose de Gambrinus lives up to the hype; I thought it was a very good framboise. The sourness is balanced with the other flavors in a way that some other sours I've had haven't been - I can see why Cantillon is considered to be one of the best. (1,059 characters)

My first Cantillon, whee! 2013 vintage, consumed fresh. 375ml bottle into Night Shift snifter. Big thanks to my lovely girlfriend katalijne for sharing her Christmas present with me ;)

Pours a majestic grapefruit-red with a frothy one-finger pink head. Head dissipates swiftly, leaving visible carbonation in the form of a steady stream of bubbles and a light ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass. No legs or lacing, as expected.

In the nostrils, a strong, lactic barnyard funk mingles pleasantly with tart berry notes. Raspberry is not the dominant fruit note, surprisingly--I do smell it, but also strong notes of sour cherry and tannic oak. Very pleasant.

In the mouth, a strong lemon juice tartness up front yields to a mid-palate full of tart raspberry as well as sour cherry, oak and tannins, earthy funk, vinegar, and a subtle Belgian yeast spiciness. Finishes oaky and tart. Almost sweet at times from the fruitiness of it, but the funk and vinegar tartness combine to keep it skirting the sweetness line rather than crossing it.

On the tongue, crisp, effervescent, and very dry. Relatively high carbonation keeps the beer refreshing and the tartness from becoming overwhelming.

On the whole...I get the hype now. I really do. This is a delicious and refreshing sour, and I truly hope this is only the start of my Cantillon consumption. (1,357 characters)

Deep reddish-pink color with a small, light pink-colored head. Hazy, much darker than a sparkling rose, with very fine bubbles. Fruity, musty aroma. A bit of lacto sour notes and a bit more of an acetic acid note. Floral and fruity with more generic berry and sour cherry notes rather than raspberry specifically.

There's major tartness but also some sweetness, and raspberry definitely comes through in the flavor from this 3 month old bottle. Lots of tart berry with a relatively low amount of funk, perhaps masked by the tartness. Really liking the tart/sweet dual nature of this. Fizzy, slick mouthfeel that's well-restrained. Minimal harshness.

This is the first sour ale that I really enjoyed quite a bit. Better than any sparkling wine of similar style I've had. (771 characters)

375 ml poured into Russian River stemmed glass

A: A soon as I popped the cap I began to see CO2 bubbles and a little bit of beer try to escape through the cork from the high carbonation. Never have I seen this but leave it to Cantillon to give me new experiences not only in flavors but physics. Appearance is a bright orange/reddish color with large bubbles from the high carbonation but quickly dissipated from the high acidity, carbonation and high attenuation. Very interesting cor for this brew though, I've never seen a beer with such a bright red/orange color. Sure its from the fruit but still unique and definitely a first for me.

S: First thing that came to mind was toasted nori sheets for making suchi without the salty sea character. Wow, I would have never guessed for a beer to smell this strange. I'm very excited to drink this baby. I was expecting Brett and Lacto funk with a huge barnyard character but it definitely caught me off guard and slapped me across the face with a glove of unexpected "only from Cantillon" uniqueness.

T: Huge tartness with slight hints of what I described as roasted nori but actually once tasting this glorious beer its actually the earthiness from the Raspberries that add a strange almost salty earthy character to the nose but make sense on the palate. Flavor is very pungent and funky but in a whole different way than I'm used to. Usually I will describe JP beers as funky or Fantome beers as funky, which they are, but this takes funk to a whole different level. The fruit definitely has a word on the level and approach of this funk but still very approachable yet very strange and attractive. Tartness is not as intense as a gueuze but is there and is very pleasant and refreshing.

M: Tart at eh beginning and finishes incredibly dry with a fruity almost nutty roast like character. The best I can describe it is old funky fruit, which might not sound good but trust me it is!

O: Very strange and completely different than I was expecting for my first Cantillon Fruit Lambic but very delicious and of course very interesting. First thing I got on the nose was roasty like Nori sheets for making sushi with that saltiness on the aroma but tasting it I got funky fruit with a very interesting unique thing going on that I have never had in other brews. This was my first Cantillon but definitely not my last and now I'm hooked! (2,389 characters)

75cl bottle into a Deschutes teku glass. Fresh bottle... 9/11/13 bottling date.

Pours a bright ruby red with a nice but not overly gushing head and a ton of sparkling bubbles. Definitely not overcarbonated. Smell is of tart raspberries, very aromatic. The taste starts out subtly tart but as you go through more and more of the beer this sourness builds up and becomes lip puckering. Raspberries are definitely very prevalent and of course you still get that traditional Cantillon funk on the back end. Mild body...mild carbonation.

Overall a terrific, funky fruit lambic from Cantillon! Im glad i had this fresh as it was very intense! i think it would lose this intensity if it aged. (688 characters)

A - Strawberry, burnt senna body. Light pink, fine foamed head. Great retention, low lace.

S - Fresh mint, barn funk, champagne, melon, pineapple juice, just a touch of raspberry, tannins.

T - Lemon juice, sour patch kids candy, dry tannins, big oak, sour cherry, fresh cranberries.

M - Bracingly sour. Sharp, dry, medium body. Huge carbonation.

Bottle into snifter, at Open Baladin, Rome

Ruby red/amber with 2 finger carbonated white head

Smell: raspberries, strawberries, citric, subtle earthiness, funky belgian yeast

Taste: not overly fruity, a pleasant combination of bitternes, not quite ripe fruit, and plenty of sourness on the aftertaste. Typical belgian yeast backbone, funky and sweet. Also some subtle oak notes mid palate that come out once warmed.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied high carbonation

Overall: one of the best lambics i've had, some can be too sour or fruity but this one blends everything perfectly. (582 characters)

A hazed maroon liquid with enough clarity to see a few bubbles feeding a three finger light pink foam that falls to a thin film rather quickly leaving no lace, about what I expected

S cheesy funky gym socks somehow smell good with all the oak, raspberries, cranberries, and strawberry, jammy, there's a little vinegar, lemon, and hay

T more sour lemon and some tart raspberries, still tart and funky, lots of wood and vinegar, tastes solid but I preferred the nose

M pretty sour but not over the top, some pucker to it, acidic and tart, well carbonated its almost foamy, slippery after its gone with a funky, woody, tart fruity finish

O great stuff and I'm glad I finally got around to trying this classic lambic, fruits holding up fairly well and the funk is coming out in a big way

I've had this one kicking around for a while but I completely forgot about it and now I want to try a fresh bottle but I doubt I'll get that chance anytime soon. (1,035 characters)

a - poured a one finger thick pink head into a tulip glass that left thick lacing throughout. the body was bubbly red.
s - syrupy with some raspberry aromas.
t - tart and funky with raspberries being the dominant flavor. incredibly puckering.
m - bubbly and dry. you can feel the tartness in your jaw.

A: cloudy, hazy dirty pink with orange hues around the edges. fluffy slightly violet head that dissipates rather quick.

S: oh wow! tart dark raspberries. barnyard funk with hints of straw, dried bread and more raspberries. full of funk. oak and vanilla in the background.

T: very similar to the aroma. huge tart raspberries. a little citrus comes through. more sour funk. very earthy. tart and sour! lots of must. quite a bit of acid and a little fresh strawberry.

M: the balance is perfect. a long lingering tingling tartness. body is light with good carbonation for the style.

O: absolutely fantastic. it teases sweetness but is actually quite tart. very complex. a wonderful drink. /95 (692 characters)

S-Wonderful raspberries, oak, grapes, some funk, not artificial at all.

T-Wow. Fresh raspberries, very sweet, mixed perfectly with tart notes that turn mildly sour. Oak in the finish.

Poured from a 375 ml bottle into teku glass. Bottled February 2013. Relatively fresh and good thing it's that way.

Pours a beautiful dark pink converging on violet. Nice big fluffy pink head that dissipates quickly.

Aroma is heavy of raspberry jam, cotton candy, rose water and just a hint of earthy/funky lambic notes.

On the palate you get that big raspberry jam character from the nose along with huge floral components. Strawberry, faint cranberry,a little wet earth, and a speck of musty basement. The illusion of sweetness is present at the front of the tongue but then is demolished by a potent dryness on the finish. As I burp up I get a marvelous raspberry bubblegum taste. Yum!

Overall this is the best raspberry based sour I've had. Very much enjoyed Oude Beersels and I found Framboise De Amarosa fantastic. Also Bells Raspberry Wild One comes close but Cantillon just knows how to do fruit lambics. (915 characters)

Appearance: Poured a thin, light pinkinh head that disappears fairly quickly as the beer selles in the glass - light carbo.

Smell: Sweet n sour as raspberry. Solid - expected tartness

Taste: Obviously raspberry & sweet berry flavors take over the funk. Almost dry on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Lightly carbonated, not overpowering.

Overall: A defintely solid raz lambic that i am lucky enough to have a few bottles of and let age for quite a while. (493 characters)

Rosé De Gambrinus pours a fairly hazy deep pinkish red with a nice white/pink head. Fragrent raspberries and sour funk mix well in the aroma, hinting at the sour flavors to come. Almost puckering sourness right off the bat leads to more well blended, earthy, dry raspberry and and funky flavors. Very complex and hard to describe. The sourness lingers and puckers just a bit more as it hits the back of the tongue. I usually avoid "fruit beers" but I knew this one would be different and it was well worth the price. (517 characters)

Poured into a Westy 12 chalice from a 375mL bottle. This was bottled Feb 18 2013, so it's been in-bottle for about 6 months. I wanted to drink this one relatively fresh (compared to other Cantillons in my cellar) to ensure the raspberry influence is as bright and close to the brewer's intention as possible.

This is 2 year aged lambic base with the addition of raspberries.

Appearance: Illustrious red with pale pink head that fizzes and dissipates within 30-45 seconds to just lacing.

Nose: Smells like lambic... some flower petal, some berry, tart grapes and slight vinegar.

Taste: The balance is exceptional and everything is very gentle - the raspberries are just sort of hanging out at a safe distance, the sourness is gentle and there just to support the wonderful medley of other flavours. Nothing stands out, but as a result, nothing is masked by an overbearing flavour. Oak and wine-like acidity and no real "funk" for me - the funk is subtle enough that it just enhances the overall profile without making itself known really.

Overall: I'm impressed, I expected this to be less of a home-run than some of the other Cantillons but I ended up really, really enjoying it - I can't even find any faults. (1,219 characters)

Bought in the middle of Brussels and brought to California just three months. The 375 ml corked and capped bottle just stares at me every time I walk by. I gave in. Pop the cap, spend some frustrating time yanking the awful cork out of the bottle, and finally it's on to the beer:

Looks like the color of red grapefruit with an added hue of pink. On top sits a large soapy head which retain very well, surprising per style. The aroma brings pressed rose pedals to the nose, then showing up is soured raspberry. It's a pleasant duet before a kiss of musty cork interrupts the show.

Sour, but not super sour. Sweet, but not super sweet. Tart, but not super tart. Cantillon has done it again. The flavor of sour raspberry with an acidic base also brings a tart lemon-like note. I feel my saliva thickening as I drink it. Despite a 5% ABV, it's medium-full bodied from the addition of fruit, and upping the ante is fun bubbly carbonation.

Lovely. That's a reference to the beer, not the nude lady on the label. (1,010 characters)

75cl bottle from May 2013, shared with Doug today, 8/4/2013. Poured into a Great Lakes snifter glass. Have had a bottle at the Brasserie Cantillon on Rue de Gheude as well.

This beer pours a ruby red body with a decent bit of white head that dissipates slowly over time. This looks similar to Cantillon Kriek, honestly. As a whole, it looks like a cross between red wine and a brown ale.

Smells straight up of fresh raspberry. Not sweet but its very fruity. It also smells a little acidic at the beginning while it was served at fridge temp. But, I poured some in a glass and set it aside so I could see what it tasted like a hour later. As it got warm, so much more of that earthy funk comes out, reminding me of the first time I walked into Brasserie Cantillon- so funky, uniquely so, yet it was mixed in with that strong fruity raspberry flavour.

Drinking it, like I said in the nose, it's fresh raspberry flavour with a decent sour complement to the flavour. As it warms up, it gets more sour and more funky compared to the raspberry flavour even though its still there in a strong amount. It's delicious, refreshing and perfect. I love it!

Mouthfeel is a bit thinner compared to the Cantillon Kriek, but its just as easy drinking. It's refreshing with a fruity raspberry aftertaste mixed in with a bit of vinegar.. medium carbonation but its just enough to fizzle on the tongue and add to the experience. Very drinkable.

After having had both the 100% Kriek and the Rosé de Gambrinus out of the bottle, I honestly think I may prefer Gambrinus to the Kriek. I thought that at the brewery, I preferred Kriek to Gambrinus but I have to seriously reassess. Fou' Foune is still the king of Cantillon, but Gambrinus has moved up in my Cantillon hierarchy for sure. (1,769 characters)

A: Pours a hazy peachy pink, with just under a finger's worth of white head that recedes pretty quickly. Good amount of visible carbonation.

S: Funky, tart raspberries and cherries, sour, barnyard, earthy.

T: Berry sweetness, then funky, earthy, barnyard with a surprisingly dry finish.

M: Light body, good carbonation sensation, and very low alcohol presence.

Enjoyed on the fourth of July in 110 degree heat. Pours bright red with fine bubbles and a small pink head. Fresh raspberry aroma is very pleasant. Very nice, intensely sour framboise lambic.
