This review is for Zwanze '12. Served at Lord Hobo for Zwanze Day of course!! Drank side by side with the Cantillon unblended 2-year lambic (see separate review).

A- Pours a slightly hazy golden without very much of head, just a slight white ring along the side of the glass that wasn't present on the unblended lambic. Slightly hazier and more carbonated then the unblended lambic, but other then that it was slightly similar.

S- Funky, musty, smells kind of like a basement, rhubarb definitely comes out giving it a little bit of an earthy smell. Smells similar to the unblended lambic but the rhubarb definitely comes out and gives it more character.

T- Funky, some must, a little bit of vinegar acidity, a nice rhubarb quality that comes out and blends very well with the must. Fairly similar to the unblended lambic with a little bit more of an earthy rhubarb quality. Similar funkiness as the other Cantillons.

M- Medium bodied, decent carbonation for a lambic, easy to drink.

O- Zwanze '12 was very good and definitely lived up to my expectations. It was awesome being able to drink it side by side with the unblended 2-year lambic which was pretty much the base beer. You could definitely tell how the rhubarb imparted a nice slightly fruited earthy taste that balanced very well with the musty funk characteristic of the Cantillon lambic. Overall I wish I could drink this much more often and I think it was better then the '10 Zwanze which is the only other I've had. You definitely missed out if you missed Zwanze day!

Zwanse 2012

On tap at Toronado SD for Zwanse Day, reviewed from notes.

A. Orange apricot in color, no head, effervescent.

S. Rhubarb, unripe fruit, light vinegar, orange zest.

T. Nice tart front, unripe citrus, rhubarb. Lemon zest, white pepper, straw funk.

M. Light and bubbly, clean, no residue

Lives up to hype, refreshing.

Sampled at Cantillon on 4/23/2013.

Ap: Hazy Orange with a nice head that dissapates slowly.

Ar: Fruity and sourness up front dominates. some earthiness.

F: I personally didn't taste the rhubarb at all until I was told that it was in there. Rhubarb is a pretty tart vegetable so I had trouble differentiating it from the tart/sourness that is in any sour beer of this sort. Lots of funk.

M: Very effervescent. Dry finishing.

O: Love it. Perhaps my favorite of the day at Cantillon, although it's a toss up between zwanze and fou fone.

A-this is a lively lambic. Looks like their guezue. A lingering film of white head atop a clear golden brew.
S-Typical Cantillon. Funky. Notes of leather, must, and stable. Sour, not picking up rhubarb but then again rhubarb doesn't have much of an aroma.
T-like the aroma. The sourness is quite high. The rhubarb seems to give this beer some astringency. Lots of that Cantillon funk.
M-very light bodied and dry.
O-distinctly Cantillon. No problem to drink a bottle of this at the brewery. Refreshing brew.

A real find for Beer bistro to bring in this rare one. Pours lightly yellow/transparent with some foaming head. Takes tartness to the edge, and a little beyond, offset by some sugar. Masterful, rhubard like you never tasted it, I do like red cabbage salad with balsmatic vinegar, and it was a cousin to that taste. Supported by fruitiness, a tad strawberry and apricot. Good till the last drop.

750ml corked and caged bottle. Shared by Ineedabeerhere. 40z. pour into a Founders snifter. Reviewed from notes at a tasting on 10/16/10.

A: Pours near no head. Just a thin white wisp atop a golde, slightly cloudy, yellow beer. No lacing. Very lightly carbonated but appropriate for its style.

S: Nose is slightly tart, Brett, horse blanket, and very cheesy. Intensely pungent funk character almost like sour feet dipped in spoiled cottage cheese... mmm... tasty right?

T: Brett character upfront is very noticeable. A pleasant, muted tartness on the back end. Flowery, cheesy and funky towards the middle to end. Cobweb and band-aid finish with a dry, floral, esthery aftertaste.

M: Light to medium bodied, lightly carbonated but surprisingly abrasive. Tickles the tongue and lively on the palate. Finsh is dry and aftertaste is filmy and lingers.

D: I can't really recall the last time 375ml of ANY Cantillon offering was enough and this is no exception. Great feel and complexity with a very appropriate, funky, cheesy nose. Hard to find but definitely worth a try!

750ml bottle - Cantillon

2012 vintage

Served in Cantillon wine-style glass. Bright orange body with a white foam ring. It's definitely a tart one - there are fruity notes coming from the Rhubarb, but in a beer of this nature, you'd have to have an expert palate to be able to identify that without knowing it was included. Some strange vegetable notes in the finish. Some good things here, some not so great. Glad to tick it, but least impressive of all of the bottles we had.

Zwanze Day 2012 on tap at Redlight Redlight.

Appearance - Not overly cloudy, but a hazy orange/peach body. No head, save some bubbles.

Smell - All the aromas of a Cantillon lambic. Lemon zest acidity and a muted funk. Fruity, but I wouldn't claim it to be rhubarb.

Taste - Again, it's fruity, without being a distinctive rhubarb flavor. It seems as if the rhubarb gave the acidity of the beer fruity character without being a definitive fruited sour, if that makes sense. Finishes like other Cantillon fruited lambics. Musty without being overly funky. Clean and pretty sour.

Mouthfeel - Crisp, spritzy. Nicely acidic without being overbearing. Well carbonated. No surprise here.

Overall - I had this along side Zwanze 08 and Fou Foune 12. Fou Foune 12 was a significantly better beer. The fruit character is spectacular by comparison. The 4 year old Zwanze, however, had a much better lambic profile. It had funked up nicely and hadn't turned too sour. No fruit character left, though.

Review #1900!!! Enjoyed during Cantillon Zwanze Day 2012 at Avenue Pub in New Orleans! Served from tap into a wine glass. Poured a fluorescent hazy yellow-orange with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, funk, grass, earth, sour, tart, and fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, dark fruit, white grape, wood, sour, tart, funk, earth, and rhubarb. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. I have been lucky to make it to the past two Zwanze Days thus far and I can honestly say that both have been worth it. I will be honest that the rhubarb was definitely a pretty strong aspect going on in this one which is what you would expect with it being fresh. While this was the case it really didn’t hurt the brew at all. Cantillon really has something special going that is hard to put into words with their brews, and this one wasn’t an exception to this. Wish it would have been a little more tart, but other than that another solid brew from them.

I was lucky enough to have Jean share a glass with me at a recent visit to the brewery. He said it was a Rhubarb lambic that was going to be the Zwanze 2012.

Redish in color. Head was very typical for lambic. Whispy and thin.
Slightly fruity in the nose. Sour upfront but fruity flavors mixed in.

Extremely well balanced. Wonderful and delicious stuff. Much more balanced and subtle compared to the Zwanze 2008. One of the more balanced and better Cantillon's I have tried.

Bottle: Poured a dirty light beige color lambic with a generous white foamy head with good retention and some very good lacing. Aroma consists of acidic notes with some tart and sour notes also easily noticeable. Taste is also a nice mix between some sour lambic notes with farmyard and wet leather notes and a balance mix between acidic notes with some tart notes. Rhubarb is kind of hard to notice because of the resemblance between the tart notes of this fruit and the base tartness from the beer. Well done overall and this is one experience they should try to repeat.

Poured on tap into a large tumbler at Churchkey for Zwanze Day 2012. From notes, happy Zwanze Day!

Cloudy unfiltered looking, orb glowing, lemon yellow and nectarine/peach body as the light punches through. Not much of a head given, but a small crown is presented with a nice collar of off white. The king has apparently been summoned and we are off. Very nice looking.

Nose comes off a little simple. Light sour melds with a good amount of grass. Slightly earthy, with a nice sense of acid quality coming. Rhubarb? not a favorite flavor of mine, and I am not detecting it, however it does smell like a solid Cantillon lambic without fail.

Palate is a very quick tartness on first sip. Grass and malt action (no doubt it's that dang rhubarb with that grass angle) come first, but also some good lemon fruit too. Finally that plant hits on the aftertaste and swallow, yup rhubarb but mostly bringing a peppery white angle. Kosher salt dry, and slightly brine in the middle palate also, crackly in a sense. Going back to the nose that white pepper/rhubarb action just will not go away, it's practically stuck in my nostrils. Feel is quite solid with good acid, and a little bit of depth. Not quite as juicy as I would want it, but gets there almost.

Overall this is a pretty fun one, and the flavors really stick with you for quite some time.

Pours a hazy light ruby color with a still head outside of a few bubbles on the edge of the glass.

Typical Cantillon funk with some musty basement smell with some bright lemon and berry fruitness.

Never had a rhubarb beer before, but should have known Cantillon could pull it off. Typical Cantillon stuff up front with a general berry flavor, some funk and some sour, but the finish is supremely tart rhubarb like the kind you get when you sample the rhubarb pie before adding the sugar.

Crisp creamy mouthfeel. Finishes somewhat oaky and dry. Pretty spot on like always.

Nice beer and glad I got to attend my first Zwanze day! This one ended up overshadowing the Fou Foune I had along with it and was one of the best ones in a day full of great beer.

Thanks to nerd for opening this up out of nowhere.

Clear burnished amber with little head or lacing.

A lot of woody funk and spiciness on the nose. Floral, peppery, acidic. Nothing overtly rhubarb-like on the nose. Smells like a nice gueuze more than anything.

Palate is very good, again very gueuze-like, with a more floral/spicy element. Rhubarb comes through a bit more on the palate, contributing a unique sourness that's complementary to the sourness of lambic. Quite dry, a little peppery and oaky. I like the subtle rhubarb element here, wish I had a chance to try this when it was fresh. Still quite good, however.

On tap at Redlight Red Light in Orlando, FL; poured to a small wine glass (4oz pour, as per the directions of Cantillon for Zwanze Day).

Appearance (4.0): Poured with minimal white head, with little retention or lacing. The body is a chill-hazy peach color, and very pretty. Head could be a bit fuller, but otherwise this is about right for the style, and the body is just gorgeous.

Smell (4.0): There’se a nice, even mix of lactic and acetic acid tones in the nose, smelling a bit like kombucha. Some tart peach and just the lightest rhubarb scents make their way into the nose, but really it’s mostly composed of the scents you’d expect from a well put-together, light-bodied sour.

Taste (4.5): Quite a bit more rhubarb that in the nose, and it’s quite tart. More lactic than acetic, and the funk is minimal. It finishes with a clean, mildly acetic finish, but leaves some mild cheesy-funky tones in the aftertaste. Incredibly drinkable. The rhubarb is unmistakable, though—very well-balanced and well-integrated into the sour character. The tartness is present and full but not harsh in any way—this is a very approachable, but dry, full-flavored sour.

Mouthfeel (4.5): Very, very nice—spritzy, without being prickly or tingling too much, and has a light body with a palpable character nonetheless. Very dry finish, never too sour at all.

Overall (4.5): Excellent—well-done. This feels like the balanced product of a brilliant idea and a natural fit: using rhubarb in a light, golden sour ale, and it’s a delightful little beer. Appetizing, entertaining, and palate-cleansing all at once. Could easily drink a large bottle of this by myself—4oz is far too little! Glad to have gotten to try this beer.

I had this on-tap at Churchkey on Zwanze day 2012. Served in a Gueuze glass.

Appearance: The beer pours a cloudy orange/golden color with a half finger of fluffy white head that fades to a small layer on top of the pour.

Smell: This is a very tart smelling beer. I'm getting traditional lambic funk, but the overall smell is rather light. Some barnyard funk and lemon juice as well. There is also a nice presence from the rhubarb.

Taste: This is quite tart for a lambic that hasn't been aged. The sour notes from the lambic and the tart notes from the rhubarb work very well together. There is a slight herbal component along with some lemon juice and funk. Very light and refreshing. The finish is quite tart.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with a lot of tingly carbonation and a finish that is super dry.

Overall: This definitely lived up to my expectations. So light and refreshing. I would love to try the 2008 version. I only with this was easier to come by.

Appearance: grapefruit colored, small head, and some good lacing.

Smell: nice sour fruit.

Taste: nice lambic sourness with a light fruit finish. 4

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy sourness.

Overall:
This is a good sour. The potent nature of it makes it hard to admire all of the complexity inside it.

A: Brassy orange body with a nice white head.
S. Lots of dry rhubarb and mushroom funk in the nose. The rhubarb is slightly tart and melds into the aroma well.
T. Rhubarb in the front, dry and tart, with some pineapple-like acidity and earthy hay. Wheat and mild brett character as well.
M. Light-bodied with light carbonation.
O. Very good, but not my favorite fruit lambic from Cantillon. The rhubarb is interesting, but not very assertive, leaving the beer feeling a bit too simple.

Draft @ Monks in Philly for Zwanze Day 2012.

Pours a hazy golden orange color with a small white head that leaves some minimal lacing.

Aromas begin with musty funk, light earthy herbaceous notes and fruit skins. As it warms I get some more emergin tart sour fruitness.

The tastes follow the nose with notes of tart grape skin, juicy citrus grapefruit, earthy oak, cheesy funk and some light berries. There is something else there which could be the rhubarb but I cannot say for sure. Our course there is the standard fantastic Cantillon lemon and barnyard yeasty funk.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium to low carbonation. Finish is mildly fruity, oay and acidic.

Overall I really enjoyed this lambic and I believe it is one of my favorites I have had from Cantillon. It had so many sublte qualities that make it difference that many other fresh Cantillon lambics. The tart, tangy, fruity aspects were restrained and balance the underlying musty and earthy notes. Wish this was in a bottle, but super glad to have had the opportunity to sample

Zwanze 2012

Light reddish honey colored pour. Smelled like dirt and sort of sulfury. Rhubarb did a number on the nose. Some celery like aroma but not as pungent.

Tart and feels oily on the palate. Sharp lemon acidity. Light bitter celery flavor. Sourness hits the back of your throat. Not incredibly interesting for Cantillon but drinkable.

Nice hazy golden / redish pour with nice degree of carbonation. Nice mild lambic aroma has some pedio. Can definitely smell the rhubarb. Smooth, soft carbonation. Really smooth, almost nutty palate is fabulous. Not so sour but a good degree of funk. the fruitiness is barely there, which I like, allowing the lambic to come forward and leave its gently assertive character on my tongue.
A very smooth beer , very well balanced

2012 on-tape at Armsby Abbey at 3PM on Zwanze Day. Reviewed from notes.

A- Really hard to see where I was in the room with the lighting but it appeared to be a golden-peachy color with a fair amount of yeast haze. A bubbly head formed initially but didn't retain for a great length of time, similar looking in all aspects to other Cantillons I have had.

S- Cantillon bugs and funk like the classic Gueuze with a definite rhubarb influence. I have a hard time describing rhubarb since I have had it like 3 times in my life but there is a vegetal, herbal fruit trait here that cannot be missed. Not as in your face as other Cantillon offerings.

T- The main flavor is certainly the classic Cantillon microflora and barrels. Big funky sour white grape, apple, lemon juice/zest, oak and general fruit tartness. Some great horse funk and barnyard from the Brett. Slightly sweet vegetal, herbal rhubarb really adds a nice dimension to the flavor.

MF- Feels like pretty much most other Cantillon offerings. Thinner body but greatly supported by that puckering sourness and nice carbonation.

Everytime I have a Cantillon I just get more and more impressed by what they get out of their house microflora. The flavors produced by the bugs are amazing and go good with added fruits and rhubarb in this case. Give it some time and the rhubarb seems to gain strength with each sip.

Bottle at the DC Lambic & Sour Tasting on April 14, 2012. Served in a Cantillon wine glass.

Pours a mostly clear, though somewhat-hazy, yellow-golden color with a small white head that left a few spots of lacing before falling to a collar.

The nose brought some light barnyard and earthy notes behind a surprising amount of rhubarb. Both the flavor and mild acidity from the rhubarb came through along with a bit of lactic acidity.

The flavor took the rhubarb component to the next level, as the signature Cantillon lemon and citric acid components combined quite well with the rhubarb and bit of backing earthiness and funk.

Flavor held for a long time on the palate after swallowing, followed by medium-heavy acidity and a light funk. Body was light with average carbonation and a very dry finish.

I was really, really impressed with this one and it was one of the big standouts to me. The fruit character held much more than I thought it would.

Glad to finally have this as well. To quote Sean below, "Final Zwanze tick." Let's hope the draft Zwanze days continue so I can easily keep this streak alive.

Somehow didn't review this the first time around, but now I get a second chance thanks to Zwanze Day at Armsby Abbey.

Very light fizzy head covering, typical for lambic, hazy golden orange color.

Nose great tart fruit funky lambic, light sour rhubarb, light bready malts, lambic like, hint lemon, little cherry like.

Taste rhubarb right off, tart funky sour fruit, funky earthy wild, sour cherry and lemon fruit, light bready malts, yeasty, funky, delicious lambic flavors. Light acid compared to other lambic, but nice. Finish is dry and sour, tart fruit and rhubarb, dry bready malts and light yeast lingering.

Mouth is med to lighter bodied, tart fruit and nice acidity, light but nice carb.

Overall awesome.

This was delicious. The rhubarb flavor was spot on-- I need to hit the minimum character requirement so I can Mark this beer as "had."
It seems like a glitch in the programing because I can't jist mark this as "had," so I I'll tell whoever reads this that this beer was pretty fucming spectacular.
Sadly it is not available. Tough shit. You missed out.
