Cantillon Zwanze 2012 served from a 750ml bottle in a basket, split amongst a bunch of a wine glasses at the Cantillon brewery. Not sure why the 2012 link takes me to the 2008 listing, but who am I to argue?

Pours a hazy golden. Looks flat. Smell is vaguely tart.

Taste is bright -- sweet and sour with a slight rhubarb flavor. Seems more citrusy thank anything else to me.

Mouthfeel is light and effervescent. Overall, this is a very good beer.

Bottle drank at the source as Zwanze 2012 on 9/6/14. Cantillon in Brussels. Pours clear golden colored with a big fluffy white head. Aroma of sweet sugars, tart rhubarb, dusty oak. Flavor has lots of funk, sweet and sour with light fruitiness, tart rhubarb with some twigs and dirt to go along, lemon tart finish. Very light bodied but with plenty of flavor and lots if carbonation. This was really nice, with the rhubarb influence subtle but noticeable.

Bottle @ Cantillon

Hazy gold with a white head. Quite a bit of carbonation present that holds a head.

Almost straight lambic but there is a nice little amount of rhubarb hanging in there to give it some dynamic. Wood, leaf, cheese, musty.

Lots of carbonation and sourness to it which is a bit of a shock at first sip. Dry of course.

Really nicely done. I bet this was exciting fresh.

A-this is a lively lambic. Looks like their guezue. A lingering film of white head atop a clear golden brew.
S-Typical Cantillon. Funky. Notes of leather, must, and stable. Sour, not picking up rhubarb but then again rhubarb doesn't have much of an aroma.
T-like the aroma. The sourness is quite high. The rhubarb seems to give this beer some astringency. Lots of that Cantillon funk.
M-very light bodied and dry.
O-distinctly Cantillon. No problem to drink a bottle of this at the brewery. Refreshing brew.

Zwanse 2012

On tap at Toronado SD for Zwanse Day, reviewed from notes.

A. Orange apricot in color, no head, effervescent.

S. Rhubarb, unripe fruit, light vinegar, orange zest.

T. Nice tart front, unripe citrus, rhubarb. Lemon zest, white pepper, straw funk.

M. Light and bubbly, clean, no residue

Lives up to hype, refreshing.

Cantillon Zwanze

Appearance: grapefruit colored, small head, and some good lacing.

Smell: nice sour fruit.

Taste: nice lambic sourness with a light fruit finish. 4

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy sourness.

This is a good sour. The potent nature of it makes it hard to admire all of the complexity inside it.

2012 vintage that is apparently a rebrew of the 2008 vintage.

Pours a murky light orange with a foamy bone head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is sour and tart with malt, fruit, and acidic aromas. Taste is much the same with sour and tart fruit and rhubarb flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with an interesting rhubarb presence that comes through slightly better in the flavor.

Keg in Earl of Essex, Sept 2012. Colour is clear amber, no head, some oiliness on the surface. Nose is burnt lambic yeasty, rhubarb, sour yeast. Taste is sour green apples, fresh rhubarb, cheesy burnt lambic, sour green fruit. Finish is tongue curling sour and some nice rhubarb fruit.

This was delicious. The rhubarb flavor was spot on-- I need to hit the minimum character requirement so I can Mark this beer as "had."
It seems like a glitch in the programing because I can't jist mark this as "had," so I I'll tell whoever reads this that this beer was pretty fucming spectacular.
Sadly it is not available. Tough shit. You missed out.

750ml bottle - Cantillon

2012 vintage

Served in Cantillon wine-style glass. Bright orange body with a white foam ring. It's definitely a tart one - there are fruity notes coming from the Rhubarb, but in a beer of this nature, you'd have to have an expert palate to be able to identify that without knowing it was included. Some strange vegetable notes in the finish. Some good things here, some not so great. Glad to tick it, but least impressive of all of the bottles we had.

75 cl bottle at Cantillon Brewery. Poured into a Cantillon chalice.

A: Poured a cloudy, golden yellow. Little, if any carbonation visible. Small foamy head that quickly dissipates.

S: Sour, signature Cantillon funk, and a little citrus. Reminded me of the Vigneronne.

T: The comparison to Vigneronne is close, but not exact. Less sour, particularly at the beginning but still with quite a pucker at the end. A friend I shared it with said "sour skittles." Not typical BA language, but it's kinda there. It's a very straight forward sourness with citrus. Doesn't seem to be a ton going on here, but what there is is certainly good.

M: Light, tart, and crisp. Reminiscent of most Cantillons.

O: I was a little disappointed with this beer. It's still very good, but the restrictions on taking it away and the price tag (the highest at the brewery per bottle, though still not bad) made me expect a bit more. I like where they're going with the beer, but I think it just turned out better with Saint Lumvinus.

Got to try a sample of this at Moeder Lambic at the pre-TdG Dark Lord tasting extravaganza! Thanks for shairng gents. This was a really fun day!

From a 750ml into a snifter
Vintage: 2012

APPEARANCE: Pours a small white head with good retention. Gamboge in color, hazy, with no carbonation evident. A splotchy wisp and ring remain but leave no real lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Rhubarb I presume, lemon citrus notes a la Cantillon, as well as some funky aromas in there too. Very bold and funky, with the rhubarb making it all the more interesting. Well balanced and enticing.

TASTE: Rhubarb again, with lots of funky and mouldy flavors up front. Some lemon and citrus sourness through the middle with more lemon and some foral bitterness at the swallow. A persistent finish is bold and quite well balanced, with the funk and sourness being nicely balanced by the rhubarb. Nice stuff.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes dry. Sour and puckering finish. Good stuff.

OVERALL: This one was really nice. Nothing traffic-stopping per se, but definitely something I'd be happy to drink on a regular basis. I completely missed Zwanze Day this year, so I was really happy to give this one a shot at Moeder Lambic. Thanks again for hosting a really fun day guys!

Sampled at Cantillon on 4/23/2013.

Ap: Hazy Orange with a nice head that dissapates slowly.

Ar: Fruity and sourness up front dominates. some earthiness.

F: I personally didn't taste the rhubarb at all until I was told that it was in there. Rhubarb is a pretty tart vegetable so I had trouble differentiating it from the tart/sourness that is in any sour beer of this sort. Lots of funk.

M: Very effervescent. Dry finishing.

O: Love it. Perhaps my favorite of the day at Cantillon, although it's a toss up between zwanze and fou fone.

2012 vintage - 750ml corked and caged bottle served by Julie Van Roy at Cantillon! Pours a beautiful honey/amber hue with a bright white head that dissipates into a latte-like froth embedded with tiny pinpricks. Nose is both herbal and medicinal. Taste is tart and vinegary with perhaps a suggestion of something vegetal, but just a hint. Mouthfeel is light in body with just a kiss of effervescence and an acidity that is slightly puckering and stimulates the salivary glands along the sides of the cheek as well as the tastebuds. Overall, a very good sour but quite acidic, making it difficult to tease out all the nuances.

2012 re-brew, on-tap at Spuyten Duyvil during Zwanze Day 2012.

A: Hazy amber body, ultra-fine off-white head. Great.

S: Sour, fruity, and vegetal. Apples, rhubarb, and edamame. Leafiness. Starch. Weird, and interesting.

T: Nicely tart up front with familiar green apple acidity leadin the way to profoundly bizarre rhubarb, asparagus, edamame, and sweet potato notes. Apple skin and dryness on the finish. So weird it's terrific.

M: Fairly light, frothy, and creamy. Excellent.

O: This was great and unique, but frankly it was a distant third behind St. Lamvinus and Mamouche in the best Cantillon of the day contest. I'd love to savor a larger pour some time, but it's not killing me that that almost certainly won't happen. There are many better Lambics out there.

Review #1900!!! Enjoyed during Cantillon Zwanze Day 2012 at Avenue Pub in New Orleans! Served from tap into a wine glass. Poured a fluorescent hazy yellow-orange with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, funk, grass, earth, sour, tart, and fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, dark fruit, white grape, wood, sour, tart, funk, earth, and rhubarb. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. I have been lucky to make it to the past two Zwanze Days thus far and I can honestly say that both have been worth it. I will be honest that the rhubarb was definitely a pretty strong aspect going on in this one which is what you would expect with it being fresh. While this was the case it really didn’t hurt the brew at all. Cantillon really has something special going that is hard to put into words with their brews, and this one wasn’t an exception to this. Wish it would have been a little more tart, but other than that another solid brew from them.

On tap at 2012 Zwanze day at WLV Liquors in Chi. Reviewed from notes.

Pour: Hazy orange with a nice finger of white, fluffy head. Head doesn't lace, and sticks around as a fizzy rim.

Smell: Lemony tartness and funk up front, followed by some earthiness. Some vegetal rhubarb sweetness, and a rootiness... almost like sweet earthy radish. Funk throughout.

Tate: Tart lemons up front again, along with more earthy funk. Big sweet rhubarb throughout, both vegetal yet fruity (citrus and... well, rhubarb - think of that one flavor in a strawberry-rhubarb pie that you just don't know what to do with... that one). Lots of funk for a relatively young lambic. Finishes earthy and tart.

Mouthfeel: Superb tartness, and quite dry. Incredibly drinkable... arguably the most drinkable offering I've had yet next to fresh kriek. Tartness lingers.

Overall: A really, really nice lambic from Cantillon. I would love to see this in bottles regularly, and it has the uniqueness of Mamouche, yet the familiar aspects of something like Fou'Foune.

Served on tap at Spuyten in BK for Zwanze Day in small snifter.

Appearance is a light golden color with a very thin head. Its` nose contains apple, white grapes and some vinegar. A bit sour in the nose but not too much so. Sipping on this small 6 ounce pour and I taste more of the white grapes, the rhubarb also comes through, and certainly a sour aspect is present. But not too sour, very nicely done. Mouthfeel is just right, medium, some carbonation. All in all, this is a great beer. I went into it hoping for another solid beer from Cantillon and that is what I got, along with a big crowd toasting for this special event !

Zwanze Day at Armsby Abbey. Always good to check off another Cantillon.

A light hazy orange/reddish color with a small white head. Decent retention with the head forming a thick ring towards the end with a bit of lace left.

Lots of bretty bugs, sour lemon, funk, oak barrel and a noticeable earthy veggie-type aspect that must be the rhubarb. Good strength. Expected Cantillon with a twist.

The rhubarb didn't come out as much in the taste to me but this is still very solid. Reminded me of their classic gueuze kind of. Good amount of funk and bugs, sour light fruits, some white wine.

Nice puckering mouthfeel with high-ish carbonation, proper for the style.

Not sure how much the rhubarb really added here but a nice lambic that brings on the smooth sour funk, as expected from Cantillon. Just not one of my favorites.

A – Poured a dank hazy orange with a small white head which didn’t last long. A nice ring of bubbles did linger around the edge of the glass till I finished my 10oz pour.

S – Had a very earthly smell like a fresh tilled garden. A little bit of citrus but it was hidden fairly well.

T – Very acidic, didn’t get much in the way of rhubarb (not that rhubarb has much flavor on its own anyway). I picked up some wheat and some citrus notes in there too.

M – Medium Bodied a little heavier than most lambics, Carbonation was on the lighter side and faded very quickly.

O – As far as a Lambic goes I thought it was pretty nice. Good amount of funk and acid. As far as a rhubarb lambic goes I felt the rhubarb didn’t add much. Really thankful I got to try it since a lot of people got shutout at ChurchKey.

On draft at Monk's for the Zwanze Day celebration. Served in 6oz portions, the brew appears a hazed pale golden orange with a white cap that is quick to dissolve. A swirl revives a finger back to the surface which is quick to fade.

The smell is rather funky with diaper, earth, sulfur and wet oak. Some enjoyable citrus and fruity tropical quality blending into the funky cheese notes makes for an interesting combination. When swirled, it gets a but musty and more notes of poopy diaper emerge.

The taste is tart and earthy with funky cheese and wet wood. Some cardboard and sulfur mixes with mild citrus hints. A bit of herbal rind quality imparts a mild fruity to bitter earthen component. Some suggestions of greek yogurt and lacto run throughout.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is tart and funky. A pleasantly drinkable experience due to the flavor despite a rather off and atypical cantillon nose. I will say I wasnt the biggest fan of this or last years Zwanze yet I appreciate the chance to join in on the celebration and try them.

Draft @ Monks in Philly for Zwanze Day 2012.

Pours a hazy golden orange color with a small white head that leaves some minimal lacing.

Aromas begin with musty funk, light earthy herbaceous notes and fruit skins. As it warms I get some more emergin tart sour fruitness.

The tastes follow the nose with notes of tart grape skin, juicy citrus grapefruit, earthy oak, cheesy funk and some light berries. There is something else there which could be the rhubarb but I cannot say for sure. Our course there is the standard fantastic Cantillon lemon and barnyard yeasty funk.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium to low carbonation. Finish is mildly fruity, oay and acidic.

Overall I really enjoyed this lambic and I believe it is one of my favorites I have had from Cantillon. It had so many sublte qualities that make it difference that many other fresh Cantillon lambics. The tart, tangy, fruity aspects were restrained and balance the underlying musty and earthy notes. Wish this was in a bottle, but super glad to have had the opportunity to sample

2012 vintage sampled on tap at West Lakeview for Zwanze Day.

A-Pours a cloudy light orange in color with a thin, tight white head.

S-It’s hard to judge the nose here. Our bartenders just washed a bunch of glasses so it started out smelling dirty and awful right after she washed them. The longer I held onto it, the more the rhubarb opened up. It is tart, a little earthy and vegetal, some lemon, and must.

T-Rhubarb pops pretty well in the flavor, this is a well executed lambic. The rhubarb is the forefront, backed by lemon rind, and some must. The secondary characteristics are pretty nuanced.

M-Light mouthfeel, light acidity, gentle carbonation, and a moderate finish.

O-Great lambic, very distinct. The rhubarb adds a funky dimension that I really enjoy. Well done Jean, looking forward to popping my ’08 to see how it compares.

on tap at monks in philly during Zwanze Day 2012 - approx 6 oz pour in wine glass

Pours a lightly hazed soft golden color with some straw and orange hues. Fluff of white head dissolves fairly quickly into a collar of film with little lacing on the glass.

Very tart and funky in the nose - reminds me of Classic Gueuze with an added fruit/vegetal note from the rhubarb. Straw, wet hay, horse blanket and yeasty funk. Touch of citrus and lemon with lingering acid.

Stark, yet balanced sour flavor right up front driven by citrus, lemon peel and rhubarb. Underlying fruit and soft vegetal tone with hints of oak and white wine. Funky and dry throughout with straw and wet hay. Rhubarb and acidic sourness in the lasting finish.

Lighter medium body, slightly higher carbonation, dry and gripping on the tongue. This felt like a rhubarb twist on the Classic Gueuze, which happens to be one of my all time favorite lambics. Getting a glass of this was total madness, but I'm psyched I had the chance to taste it.

On tap at La Fine Mousse in Paris, France.

Pours like a gueuze with a thin white head.

Nose; gueuze with some rhubarb.

Taste; reminds me of Cantillon gueuze with a little age (maybe 4 years) on it and a touch of rhubarb in the finish to make it a bit more crisp and clean.

Mouthfeel; like Cantillon Gueuze, crisp and dry.

Overall; honestly, after how awesome last years Zwanze was and knowing this years was the same as 2008, it's about what I expected. Another tasty lambic from the people who I think do them best. It was another awesome zwanzeday though and I look forward to the next; thanks Jean and Family for doing what you do, the way you do it!
