Zwanze Day 2011! Pours hazy red orange with a thin layer of bubbles on top.

The aroma is tart orange with some sweet grape. There seems to be just a tad bit of blanket smell, but this is overall a clean smelling sour.

The taste starts out with grape skin and has just enough sweetness to balance the crisp tart finish. The sourness is mellow compared to other Cantillons, allowing the fruit flavor to have more emphasis.

The body is light with some nice mellow carboation. This feels juicy.

Very delicious; I continue to enjoy the grape lambics.

Pretty sure you can only get this at the cafe. It was one of the few that they wouldn't let us leave with. I think it's probably a legal issue with the label (i.e., no X-ed out pregnant women means not street legal). Still, this one is worth a visit if you're close, but in my opinion is not up to par with most of Cantillon's other fine offerings.

Pours light reddish brown, with a thin head, and reasonably clear for a lambic (as compared to the relatively cloudy kriek and framboise). I wonder: is this a sign of less fruit?

Flavor is vinous, with tannins, peppery notes on the finish, all of which make for a tasty beer. This one is a bit more reserved than many of the other offerings of Cantillon. Perhaps the grape is a bit shier than the Merlot or Muscat grapes from the excellent St. Lamvinus and Vigneronne. I think it was an experiment that went well but will probably not make it into their regular offerings without a bit more work.

Zwanze Day 2011

Dark ruby with purple and dark pink edges. Almost no head, though there is a thin layer of near-white bubbles atop. Spots of lacing.

Bright aromas of red grapes and plump, juicy grapefruit, a touch of barnyard funk, earth, and grass. There's a mild sourness lingering underneath the more sweet and earthy aromas.

Bright grapefruit flavors initially, followed by a mild muskiness, sweet grapes, barnyard funk, hay, and grass. A complete, unique, and very pleasant combination.

Thin bodied with low carbonation, though incredibly dry and a pleasure to drink.

An interesting combination of bright, vibrant fruit flavors and earthy farm funk. A delight.

On Tap at Monk's Cafe in a Cantillon tasting glass x2.

Pinot D'Aunis boasts a deeply dark shaded orange, rose red color with not much activity to speak of. The top portion had no bubbles to speak of, no lace.

Smell is on the funky tip with old feet and some grapes. Musty old wood with some hay and other things from the barn. Not as pungent than other grape infused cantillons. Some earth from the small hopping.

Light grape going into musty barnyard territory, hay/straw. The grape lays down a fruity essence that blends OK with the funk from the barrel & the wet wood. The pepper is there at the end but understated. 'St. Lamvinous light' with different grapes.

Light acidity mixed in with some lactic quality, neither to big. The body is a small step up from light. The pucker is nice and pronounced yet not at 07' 100% Kriek levels. Almost no activity carbination wise, very still.

Great stuff and easy enough to drink. It hits all the marks of a true lambic. Not sure if the low carb was intended but it does not hurt the overall brilliance of this beer.

750ml bottle purchased at the brewery, poured into a Cantillon tulip...Pours a clearish medium pink, very similar to a cherry 7up. A bright white head with good retention and lacing. This was carbonated nicely...The aroma is complex with a lot going, oak, spices and grapes combine nicely...The taste is very vinous, not as grapey as the Don Q but still a very vinous beer. Again oak, with black pepper, and flowers. Comes mostly across as sweet red wine. The feel is super dry, tannic and superb on the palate, rough, sticky, and full...Easy to drink as this crushed by the girlfriend and I in about 15 minutes.

This is a unique taste, easy to drink and well worth trying, especially if you are a red wine fan.

Had this a second time thanks to Jeppe. Not nearly as impressed, this one was still and drinking it at Cantillon gave me some rose color glasses.

The Great Lambic Summit

Pours a purply pink lemonade color with spritzy carbonation. Scent is of watery white wine grapes filled with peppery spice. Id hate to say it, but smells sort of like a sugary sweet wine akin to Boones Farm. The taste brings the watery sour grapes and pink grapefruit with an herbal, peppery spice background. Very mild funk to it. Light bodied, spritzy. An interesting offering to say the least.

A: The beer pours a flat purple-red color with a nice haze and no head.

S: The fruit provide a slightly sweet aroma with plenty of red grape aroma. There is also a nice grapefruit note as well as Cantillon's usual musty funk. Plenty of lemon, some grass, and straw.

T: Tart lemon and grape flavors with lots of earthy funk in the form of grass and straw. Somewhat musty with a more mild fruit character than the nose lets on. Only a mild funk, which is sort of disappointing, considering the nose.

M: The body is medium with a rather low level of carbonation.

O: Very pleased to have tried this. A great nose and very pleasurable overall.

750ml bottle – big thanks to Jason for sharing this beauty. Poured into my Cantillon taster – a pinkish red with a creamy head and nice lacing. Aroma has a great funkiness to it, with white pepper, grape skin and citrus notes. Taste is apple tart with a vinus backbone. Fresh fruits and red wine dominate the palate. Nicely carbed. The finish is fairly minerally and dry, though overall really well balanced. Glad I got a taster of this, but jealous of those who will be pounding this at Zwanze day. A terrific sour.

On draft at Churchkey for Zwanze Day. A huge thank you to drabmuh and Thorpe429 for making sure I got to sample this.

The beer is a beautiful shade of pinkish purple, with virtually no head or lacing. The aroma is funky, with a lot of musty grapes. I'm also getting some berries, particularly blackberries. The flavor is good, but not great, at least as far as Cantillon goes. Quite musty, with a slight tannic note. The body is pretty thin, with low carbonation. Overall, I am thrilled to try this. Another great beer from my favorite brewery.

Review from notes. Drank this on Zwanze Day 2011 at Monk's Cafe with the gang. Since then I've had a bottle of the original vintage (thanks Joel), which was noticeably better, but I don't have notes on that bottle.

L - Pink grapefruit and Gulf sunset in a glass. A light, near clear haze from a perfect morning overlooking Long Bay in Antigua.

S - A lot going, with an abysmal depth though singular in spirit. Pinot wine grpes - fresh, sweet, smoke, sea salt, nice light citrus/grapefruit, strawberry. Just great, like a burst of white grapefruit corpuscels.

T - So subtle in the deepest flavors. Hauntingly beautiful pinot grape, pinot jam (if there is such a thing), grapefruit pith, even a trace of smoke/salt/earth. Hint of lime rind, actually. All about the depth of pinot, which is substantial.

M - Crushable velvet, delicate linen, soft feather bed. Delicate and delightful. I', surprised and even a bit taken aback - tannic yet uplifting, smooth palate-coating with the right amount of carbonated tingle. Really just right with the balance of oakey tannins.

O - 4.5 Clearly special. I wanted the taste to pop more with fruit flavor, but the depth is pretty delightful.

Served on-tap at Monk's on Zwanze day.

A - Pours orangish red with a very small half finger tall head, dissipating down to nothing at all, leaving no lace at all down the glass.

S - Smells of grape juice and grape skins, ripe blackberries, oak tannins, light spice, and the ever present damp barnyard funk. This one is fairly vinous with just enough funk to bring it all together.

T - Starts off with hints of pinot grape flavors, both the juice and the skins, quickly giving way to a mix of musty barnyard funk, wet hay, lemon twang, and a tiny bit of grape jelly sweetness. The finish is a mix of vinous grape skin, funk, and light sweetness, lingering on the pallet for a short period of time.

M - Medium body and flavor with moderately low carbonation. Smooth, dry, feel with very little carbonation but I think that is a good thing for this particular beer.

O - I really liked this one. Compared to the other two Zwanze's this was a bit more complex. It could have used a tiny bit more carbonation, mostly to help with the looks, but it was still a very enjoyable beer. Glad I made the trek down to Monk's to try these.

Luckily I got to try the new Zwanze this morning at the open brew day at Cantillon. Deep red in the glass, very small head. Fruity-berry aroma, reminds me of dry red wine. Starts mild with an increasing fruitiness. Fine berry notes. For a short moment there are some sweet hints, but that disappears fast. Mild-sourish finish, fruity-berry aftertaste. Very drinkable. Great beer! Too bad there are no bottles of it...

Pours out a bright, slightly opaque, reddish orange - reminiscent of blending raspberries and beaches - with a light frothing of tiny peach bubbles that fade into a ring.

Smell is subtle - funky, earthy horseblanket, and citrus tartness - somewhat similar to ruby red grapefruit in sourness - and a bit of spice on the finish.

Taste is more tart than the smell indicates. Lots of earthy funk, a touch of grape sweetness, more sour grapefruit and a distinct touch of pepper.

Feel is good - highly carbonated and prickley.

Overall, a solid, intriguing offerring, but doesn't quite hold up to the Lou Pepe fruits or Fou Foune.

On tap at Russian River for Zwanze Day 2011.

App: pours with no head and a hazy watermelon color. Or looks like grapefruit juice.

Aroma: cantillon funk and faint plactic-y phenolics, tart berries and general fruit.

Taste: biting fruity acidity, soft grain, wheat and oak. Ripe and tart berries. Tannins and grape skins. Way more enjoyable than the St. Lamvinus I had recently, where the plastic and pool water taste was too prominent. Peppery phenols and vanilla emerge as it warms.

M: nice carbonation, not too slick, great for the beer.

Overall: cool beer, great idea, fun event, one of the top fruit lambics I have had.

On tap at Monk's during Zwanze day. Lucky to get four pours ... its good to stick around after the tickers leave!

Initial impression is that this doesn't have the same pop that Pinot D'Aunis did out of the bottle when I had it last year. In particular, the nose is much more restrained and muted in this offering.

A: Reddish-orange-pink body. Initial pour had a smaller pinkish head--presumably due to being poured from a pitcher. Later pours had a more substantial head that left a fine film like lacing.

S: Soft vinous notes, oak, slight must and lemon-citric notes. Not getting the fruitier-strawberry notes that were plentiful in the first batch.

T: Ripe red-wine grapes. Lemon, funk, some mineral notes, oak and tannins. Still missing the fruitier notes, but more assertive and impressive than the nose.

M: Smooth bodied, with low, but appropriate carbonation. Nice dry finish leaves a refreshing, almost zesty close.

O: A delicious, unique Cantillon. Not quite as nice as the initial bottling. There has been discussion that its not quite the same recipe ... I'd believe it. It also could just be harvest to harvest variation in the grapes. Regardless... I dig this beer and was glad to get a few.

on tap at monks in philly during Zwanze Day 2011

Pours a hazed cherry red with some burnt orange tones. Light beige head fades out leaving some wispy film behind.

Tart and funky in the nose with peppery spice. Red wine and red grape skin with slight acidity. Soft fruitiness with a light touch of oak as well.

Sour up front driven by red wine and grape skin character. Hints of oak and tannin with merlot. Touches of a funky cheese and yeast. Decent amount of acidity and tartness, definitely reliant on the red wine notes. Long, lingering finish with tart dark fruit.

Medium body, nice carbonation, dry and lingering on the tongue in a pleasing manner. Really impressive offering, I enjoyed the wine characteristics, although I probably prefer St. Lamvinous with some age on it to this.

Review taken from notes I wrote on a scrap of paper. Served on tap at Zwanze Day ’11 at West Lakeview Liquors. Sampled in my newly acquired Cantillon tasting flute.

A-Zwanze pours a light pinkish red with about a half fingers worth of thin white head. Not much to add in terms of lacing as the head dissipates rather quickly.

S-Nose is predominately pepper, grape, light cherry, lemon rind, grass, must, and horse blanket.

T-The taste follows suit with more grape and lemon rind, cob web, some light grass, and pepper on the finish. I was told at Zwanze Day that the pepper character actually came from the grapes that were used in Zwanze ’11....pretty interesting.

M-Light to medium bodied, with pleasant acidity, light carbonation, and a nice finish.

O-Though I still need to try Zwanze ’08 (which I thankfully have in my cellar), this has been my favorite of the series by far. I hope Zwanze Day happens for years to come, couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day.

Had on tap at the Avenue Pub in New Orkeans for Zwanze Day.

A - Slight cloudiness. Burnt amber, orange, rose. Carbonation evenly falls down side of glass when tilted, but ring persists. 

S - Funk. Horse blanket. Classic Cantillon smell. Slight band-aide, medicinal. Grapes in the nose.

T - Earth, spiciness. A little residual sweetness. Oaky red wine at the end.

M - Slight carbonic dancing on the tongue. Coats the mouth well. Slight astringency yet residual sweetness balances it out. A touch of acidity in the after taste.

O - Exceptional sour as usual from Cantillon. Glad to have partook.

Zwanze day 2011 at west lakeview liquor chicago

Poured into stemmed cantillon glass

Pour was a light ruby red. Very similar to watermelon juice. Very little head but some. Head was light pinkish.

Lots of soured red grape with a nice funky and spicy mix.

Soured red grape with a lemon bite. Through out the middle was a spicy bite, like black or chili pepper. Oak was faint.

Very dry through out with a light to mild carbonation. Nice light pucker.

At first i was not feeling this but i quickly started loving it. I want more.

Also known as Zwanze 2011...this might be an early release...hand written bottle label. Not dry hopped. Deep tart aroma, tiny head, copper gold color. A touch of grapes, apple, bugs...nothing too tart but rich and flavorful. Very slight touch of wood...dry...lemon.

Pores into a taster. Pours a vibrant red grapefruit color with a cap of snow white head.

The aroma tart start to finish with a little bit of sweet grapes somewhere in the middle. A little bit of a red wine vinnegar finish here. Crisp red grape skin flavor. Seems to have a bit of a red grapefruit tartness to it. Fruity and tart straight up and simply delicious.

The body is light with active carbonation. Seems to be a little tannic. Overall this one is darn good. Nice and tart with great grape flavors.

Had on tap at ChurchKey, D.C., on Zwanze Day 2011. Incredibly unique beer. I was at the event with a friend of mine, and both of us thought the smell on this beer was just outrageous. Not necessarily good, but outrageous. Maybe because it was simultaneously so bitter/musty/funky.

Past the smell, the taste had a mellow brett funk that worked really well with the pretty grape-heavy backdrop. Also some wild sourness at the finish, fun + astringent. Overall I really enjoyed it, but would probably enjoy it even more in a few years.

A: beautiful cigar brown -- clear, bright brown

S: easily identifiable as something that's sour and oh-so-spectacular

T: bright, tart, sour, with a barnyard-y finish

M: sparkling, dry, refreshing

D: non-stop, this can go for days ... Please, someone force-feed me Zwanze with a beer bong -- even though it'd be such a crime against this goodness

I ended up getting this at Spuyten Duyvel in NY on Zwanze Day. Zwanze 2011 pours a burnt orange color with a small amount of head that recedes to a small white ring around the outside of the glass. Aroma is huge funk and white grape juice with what I can only describe as fresh paint (in a good way) and mustiness. Flavor is very funky and quite sour with again that whit grape juice flavor. Mouthfeel I light and refreshing with a very nice level of carbonation. Overall this beer plus the experience of zwanze day was outstanding.

On tap at Zwanze Day at Russian River. Pours a slightly hazy reddish amber with a small white head that goes to a ring around the glass. The aroma is cherry, funk, some light medicinal notes, light oak, as well as some red wine. The initial taste has some cherry sweetness that goes into light oak and red wine grapes. Typical funk on the finish with some light medicinal notes and a light astringency. Mildly sour. Medium-full body. Low carbonation. Overall a very enjoyable beer. Has slightly more sweetness than many Cantillons, but it worked well for this beer.
