Served on-tap at Monk's on Zwanze day.

A - Pours orangish red with a very small half finger tall head, dissipating down to nothing at all, leaving no lace at all down the glass.

S - Smells of grape juice and grape skins, ripe blackberries, oak tannins, light spice, and the ever present damp barnyard funk. This one is fairly vinous with just enough funk to bring it all together.

T - Starts off with hints of pinot grape flavors, both the juice and the skins, quickly giving way to a mix of musty barnyard funk, wet hay, lemon twang, and a tiny bit of grape jelly sweetness. The finish is a mix of vinous grape skin, funk, and light sweetness, lingering on the pallet for a short period of time.

M - Medium body and flavor with moderately low carbonation. Smooth, dry, feel with very little carbonation but I think that is a good thing for this particular beer.

O - I really liked this one. Compared to the other two Zwanze's this was a bit more complex. It could have used a tiny bit more carbonation, mostly to help with the looks, but it was still a very enjoyable beer. Glad I made the trek down to Monk's to try these.

Zwanze day at Spuiten Duyvil in Brooklyn. Great event, nice taps, reasonable prices and well-run by the bar staff.

A- mild, lighter pink grapefruit color, a bit hazy

S- some funk and hops in the nose.

T-nice acidity (teeth-cleaning kind, but this was my third lambic of the afternoon), a lot of hoppiness present, mildly fruity. A bit more funky than other Cantillons.

M-lightly carbonated, refreshing.

O- an excellent beer I would love to drink everyday, if available and I had the budget!

On tap at Russian River for Zwanze Day 2011.

App: pours with no head and a hazy watermelon color. Or looks like grapefruit juice.

Aroma: cantillon funk and faint plactic-y phenolics, tart berries and general fruit.

Taste: biting fruity acidity, soft grain, wheat and oak. Ripe and tart berries. Tannins and grape skins. Way more enjoyable than the St. Lamvinus I had recently, where the plastic and pool water taste was too prominent. Peppery phenols and vanilla emerge as it warms.

M: nice carbonation, not too slick, great for the beer.

Overall: cool beer, great idea, fun event, one of the top fruit lambics I have had.

A - Served a cloudy red-orange color with a bit of pink mixed in and a thin ring of white head around the edges. The head fades fairly quickly but did leave some lacing behind.

S - Aroma is a mix of sour and tart white grape with a bit of over-ripe strawberry. There is some hay and some funk with a bit of brett character as well.

T - Starts off with some sour white grapes and some tart over-ripe strawberry flavor. It tastes just a bit acidic in a good way. Through the middle, some hay and funky character comes through with a bit more acidity as well. The finish is a mix of tart and sour with a nice funky and brett flavors lingering alongside the fruit.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Very smooth with a nice acidic and slightly pucking tartness.

D - Very drinkable. Very nice balance of sour and tart flavors with the right level of acidity. I also really liked the fruit flavors throughout.

On tap at Churchkey yesterday for Zwanze Day 2011. Luckily, this wasn't nearly as crowded as was expected and I got to have a few glasses. Served in a stange.

Pours a nice light red with a bit of a maroon tint to it. Good white head with a touch of a pinkish hue. Nice retention and a bit of lacing as it went down.

The nose was interesting, especially at first when it was fairly cold. At that point, there was a bit of grape character, but mostly it was a bit of musty earth along with faint bits of spice, maybe pepper. As it warmed, the grape character started to come through along with some light acidity. Must, earth, and pepper then faded toward the background. Really intriguing.

The taste fall back a bit from there. Each component was present, but there wasn't the type of fruit and lambic integration that you get from the best Cantillon fruit lambics. The fruit was a bit too muted, with the focus too far toward some must and light tannin. Maybe it's the type of pinot grape; I'm certainly no expert there.

Mouthfeel goes back toward the nose. Nice light-medium body with low-ish carbonation. Faint acidity and a nice earthy dryness through the finish. Very drinkable and not super-acidic like many Cantillon fruit lambics.

All in all, quite tasty and I'm really glad I got to try this one. The concept of the release was nice; I'd be quite happy if this became a tradition for Zwanze releases.

Poured into my Cantillon tasting glass (too cold.... waiting for the toast for the beer to warm a bit)

While I wait:
Pours a beautiful pinkish red. A nice white very faint pink ring of head on the edges. Looks very nice. Smells tart and fruity. Definitely get grape on the nose as well as some funkiness. The brett is very prominent on the nose. No real hops to speak of. Did I hear somewhere this one was dry hopped? hmmm

3:01... I want a sip!
The upstairs loft decides to toast early as we can't wait for them to finish talking downstairs!

Tastes tart and grape heavy. a sweetness from the grapes that is very unique. The bretty funkiness and bitterness from the grapes meld well. Quite enjoyable. Well carbonated. Light on the tongue. Overall a very enjoyable sour

Full pour into an oversized wine glass. Was lucky enough to have the chance to try this at the Holy Grale in Louisville.

Pours a pinkish hue with almost no head and leaves a nice thin lacing around the sides of the glass. Beer looks like grapefruit juice. Smell notes of pepper, grapes, and tart. All of the smells compliment each other and mesh together perfectly. Taste notes of peppercorns, raspberries, grapes, and tart. Beer has a bit of a spice to it and is complimented very well from the tart from the fruit. Beer drinks very well and has a dry finish. Glad I was given the chance to try this. An amazing beer, a bit pricy ($14 per glass), but probably will never be able to drink again so I'll pay the price. Thanks Cantillion and Holy Grale for giving me the opportunity to taste this amazing beer.

On Tap at Monk's Cafe in a Cantillon tasting glass x2.

Pinot D'Aunis boasts a deeply dark shaded orange, rose red color with not much activity to speak of. The top portion had no bubbles to speak of, no lace.

Smell is on the funky tip with old feet and some grapes. Musty old wood with some hay and other things from the barn. Not as pungent than other grape infused cantillons. Some earth from the small hopping.

Light grape going into musty barnyard territory, hay/straw. The grape lays down a fruity essence that blends OK with the funk from the barrel & the wet wood. The pepper is there at the end but understated. 'St. Lamvinous light' with different grapes.

Light acidity mixed in with some lactic quality, neither to big. The body is a small step up from light. The pucker is nice and pronounced yet not at 07' 100% Kriek levels. Almost no activity carbination wise, very still.

Great stuff and easy enough to drink. It hits all the marks of a true lambic. Not sure if the low carb was intended but it does not hurt the overall brilliance of this beer.

On tap at 2011 Zwanze day at Holy Grale in Louisville. Poured into a Cantillon tasting glass.

Clear pinkish red with a white head that dissipates quickly into a ring around the edges of the glass.

White peppercorns and some sage on the nose. Cranberries and white wine grapes offer a fruit presence, and a nice barnyard funk with some cheesey undertones. A dull spicyness from the hops.

Forward with great notes of fruit and funk, primarily wet hay and grapes. Then a touch of earthyness and spice. Sage and white peppercorn again, most likely from the hops used in this. Nice.

Fluffy on the palate with a medium body, soft spritzy carbonation.

A real nice grape lambic with notes of funk, spice and earth. Glad I had the opportunity to try this one because after today, it would be next to impossible to ever try again.

In my selfishness, I drank almost an entire 750 ml of this but in my defense, everyone else had the same opportunity to buy some. Served in a snifter and stange in 6 ounce pours.

Beer is pink, hazy, nice white head of small bubbles, overall lowly carbonated, interesting.

Beer smells mildly medicinal, with grape skins, sweetness, mild acetic, good overall.

The base of this beer comes through with a mild fruitness, definitely the grape comes through here. It is mildly sweet, very tart on the finish, mildly dry, overall a good beer. Interesting but I heavily prefer St. Lam to this beer. Something seems fake about it, an almost plastic taste.

Zwanze 2011 on tap at Stone for Zwanze Day.

A: Hazy reddish orange with a small fizzy white head.

S: Damp earthy notes with prominent horsey and barnyard characteristics. Lightly spicy floral presence blends nicely with the lambic. There's a little vinegar and evident grapes. Oak is present. Smells great. There's a moderate lactic profile.

T: Opens with hay, oak, and earth. The beer has an upper moderate mouth puckering tartness. A light acetic acidity blends with a light lactic presence. There's a touch of short-lived sweetness midpalate. The beer has a lightly spicy floral profile with pronounced musty barnyard notes.

M: Medium body with moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is dry.

Overall: Good stuff. The hops were a nice touch.

On tap at Churchkey for Zwanze Day. A couple of 6 oz pours in stances and snifters.

Pours a murky, ruby red with a frothy, large pale pink head. Minimal retention and lacing. Aroma is musty and mildly sour; vinous, oak, grapes and lemon. Flavor is similar, strong vinous fruit flavor with a light sour finish. Minimal "funk" and overall quite simple. Medium body with light carbonation. Very nice and enjoyable across multiple samples, but I'd rather drink St. Lamvinus among other things. Would love to try the first batch...

3 oz. pour (I had 3 of 'em). Rudy purple-ish brown, burgundy maybe? (like a purple cherokee tomato), thin, thin white ring. I found the aroma to be muted, though it probably was just too cold. Somewhat typical of Cantillon, barnyard, hints of fruity, juicy grape. My nose is not excited. All of my fears have been washed away, this beer tastes amazing! Perfect, tart, sharp, pie crust, with juicy grape fruity-ness. The acidic tartness hits you first, then a wave of fruity juicy wine like grape quality finishing slightly barn like and oh so dry. One mean sour. Dry, dry, dry, what else can I say. I truly special beer, and a tasty one. I am really glad to have shared this beer with good friends old and new.

Poured on tap at ChurchKey DC into a tumbler almost half small stange like glass as part of Zwanze day 2011. Full pour given.

Prepared from the tap, a copper ruby body is noticeable with a pink foamy head texture looking like it gets some hues from the body. While resting the beer is served with the head mostly gone but mine had a small pink collar that never disappeared. On closer inspection up front a sheet of paper behind shows the beer as a classic looking grapefruit juice color, EXACTLY like grapefruit with cloudy character also. That's pretty darn impressive.

Bouquet. Sure here we have classic brett character and some tartness, some small cherry, but a distinct are you kidding me? It's tomato. There are tomatoes in my grapefruit beer. Woah what's going on here!?

Taste follows the nose. Tomato V8 quality comes out with mild cherry tartness. I am looking around within 12 feet radius for a salad that just got prepared to make sure this isn't messing with me. Quick slightly sharp sting gives a biting pepper quality which practically makes this black pepper stinging bloody-mary sense. Viscosity seems a little muted not so much teeth coating as other lambics. Tartness seems just a little buried behind this vegetative slightly thick texture and character. Maybe even ratatouille?

Overall this is one crazy beer never had any lambic or beer taste like this before. This was odd but it was fun you got to admit.

A: beautiful cigar brown -- clear, bright brown

S: easily identifiable as something that's sour and oh-so-spectacular

T: bright, tart, sour, with a barnyard-y finish

M: sparkling, dry, refreshing

D: non-stop, this can go for days ... Please, someone force-feed me Zwanze with a beer bong -- even though it'd be such a crime against this goodness

I had this on draft at Churchkey in DC at Zwanze Day 2011.

A: Bright, glowing red-orange.... almost carnival in nature actually, with a non-translucent disposition, and virtually no head. Well, maybe just a bubble here and there.

S: This one skated on the edge of glorious fruit profile and compost... sour pixie stick candy and stomach acid. All of this funk was wrapped up neatly into a somewhat peppery package.

T: Very acidic, with more than a dash of white and black pepper. Additionally, I got hay bail, vomit, melted "Astro Pop" candy, and kerosene. How's that for complexity?

M: Funky and very dry, but not nearly as palate-wrenching as something like... say... Red Poppy. The barnyard elements and sweetness meshed very well together and layed on the palate quite well. Fortunately, there was just enough vinegar to tame it.

O: Having a day like Zwanze Day, where a bunch of BAs can get together to celebrate one of the world's most beloved breweries is not only a treat, but a gateway to something truly nostalgic. Cantillion knows this, and produce a product worthy of the event...

Zwanze day 2011 at west lakeview liquor chicago

Poured into stemmed cantillon glass

Pour was a light ruby red. Very similar to watermelon juice. Very little head but some. Head was light pinkish.

Lots of soured red grape with a nice funky and spicy mix.

Soured red grape with a lemon bite. Through out the middle was a spicy bite, like black or chili pepper. Oak was faint.

Very dry through out with a light to mild carbonation. Nice light pucker.

At first i was not feeling this but i quickly started loving it. I want more.

Had on tap at Russian River Brewing Company on International Zwanze Day. First enjoyed this from the bottle at Cantillon in March 2011.

Body is a hazy orange/pink/garnet. Seems a bit more hazy and subdued in color than when I had this. No head to speak of, just a ring of bubbles.

Smells of red wine grapes and the characteristic Cantillon funkiness and old wood. There is a bit of spice in the nose.

Tastes of light red wine, oak, a bit of tannin, and long spicy, dry finish. I get some light cinnamon spice. Somewhat tart, but not overly sour. I think this is tasting a bit drier now that it has aged another half year.

Body is light and carbonation is low, giving this a flattish mouthfeel. But there's a lot of action with the wine flavor, acidity, and long dry spicy finish to give this an interesting mouthfeel.

I thought this was delicious and worth going out of my way for. Now the only way to get this will be at Cantillon in bottles. Hope I get back to Cantillon soon enough to have some more. Thanks Jean.

On draft at Churchkey for Zwanze Day. A huge thank you to drabmuh and Thorpe429 for making sure I got to sample this.

The beer is a beautiful shade of pinkish purple, with virtually no head or lacing. The aroma is funky, with a lot of musty grapes. I'm also getting some berries, particularly blackberries. The flavor is good, but not great, at least as far as Cantillon goes. Quite musty, with a slight tannic note. The body is pretty thin, with low carbonation. Overall, I am thrilled to try this. Another great beer from my favorite brewery.

Had a few 6 oz. pours at Churchkey in DC today.

Pours a dark pink (raspberry crayon) color with a full white cap of foam. Very opaque and cloudy. Beautifully vibrant and unusual color.
Smells of musty, barnyard funk with a strong acetic note. A slight fruity background persists and gives relief from just straight sour notes. Grape skin comes to mind.

The flavor is powerfully sour and tart. Grape fruitiness lingers slightly in the back with a major display of funk in the foreground. In addition to the fruitiness, I get a quality similar to what a vine-ripened tomato would give with a slightly sour twinge. Incredibly drying finish.

The Mouthfeel is spectacular with a puckering quality from the sour notes, yet super drying in the finish. Makes my saliva ducts go nuts every time I take a drink. Medium carbed and smooth.

Overall an awesome fruit lambic with plenty of complexity and very satisfying.

on tap at monks in philly during Zwanze Day 2011

Pours a hazed cherry red with some burnt orange tones. Light beige head fades out leaving some wispy film behind.

Tart and funky in the nose with peppery spice. Red wine and red grape skin with slight acidity. Soft fruitiness with a light touch of oak as well.

Sour up front driven by red wine and grape skin character. Hints of oak and tannin with merlot. Touches of a funky cheese and yeast. Decent amount of acidity and tartness, definitely reliant on the red wine notes. Long, lingering finish with tart dark fruit.

Medium body, nice carbonation, dry and lingering on the tongue in a pleasing manner. Really impressive offering, I enjoyed the wine characteristics, although I probably prefer St. Lamvinous with some age on it to this.

On tap at Monk's during Zwanze day. Lucky to get four pours ... its good to stick around after the tickers leave!

Initial impression is that this doesn't have the same pop that Pinot D'Aunis did out of the bottle when I had it last year. In particular, the nose is much more restrained and muted in this offering.

A: Reddish-orange-pink body. Initial pour had a smaller pinkish head--presumably due to being poured from a pitcher. Later pours had a more substantial head that left a fine film like lacing.

S: Soft vinous notes, oak, slight must and lemon-citric notes. Not getting the fruitier-strawberry notes that were plentiful in the first batch.

T: Ripe red-wine grapes. Lemon, funk, some mineral notes, oak and tannins. Still missing the fruitier notes, but more assertive and impressive than the nose.

M: Smooth bodied, with low, but appropriate carbonation. Nice dry finish leaves a refreshing, almost zesty close.

O: A delicious, unique Cantillon. Not quite as nice as the initial bottling. There has been discussion that its not quite the same recipe ... I'd believe it. It also could just be harvest to harvest variation in the grapes. Regardless... I dig this beer and was glad to get a few.

Happy Zwanze Day 2011! Had on tap at Spuyten Duyvil. About a 4oz pour served out of a Cantillon flute. Reviewed from notes.

Served with a 1 finger foamy white head with poor retention. No lace. Beer is a clear tomato peach. Moderate legs. Decent but average.

Nose is a pungent sweet grape, cheese, farmhouse dung, wet hay, and cobwebs. Very typical and very delicious of Cantillon. Some sharp fruitiness tickles the nose also.

Opens grape tartness, some sharp cheese. More sour grapes in the middle. Grape pulp, seed, and skin. Some wet hay at the end. Finishes with a residual sweetness and a tart grape skin aftertaste. Super funky and delicious but quite simple.

Light bodied with low to moderate carbonation. Oily, dry, and sticky in the mouth with a dry finish and a puckering, dry aftertaste. Really brings out the funky tartness in this one.

A really solid offering from Cantillon but probably the least impressive of the grape-based fruit lambics that I've had from them. Still, I'd love to have the opportunity to have this one again some time.

The 2011 Zwanze poured at Churchkey in DC arrives a reddish pink with no head. The nose is a lot more lemony than the first batch of the pinot d'aunis, with the lambic being more assertive. There's oak, tannins with grapes and grape skins. This is quite bright on the nose. Moderately fruity with mild yellow peach and some blackberries. Not as peppery as the first batch.



The palate is medium light with a low level of carbonation, working well with the moderate vinous character. Lots more black pepper and blackberries than on the nose. Grape character is moderate with a definite tannin character. The acetic character is very low, and that makes this less strawberry-like and more blackberry-like. The midpalate has a lot of lemon. Drying and tannic on the finish with a lingering lemony sourness and a mild black pepper note, this is excellent. The lambic is great, but i wish the grapes were more assertive. Nonetheless, this is an excellent beer, one i'm glad to have had a chance to revisit this.

On tap at Stone

A- Reddish, orange body with little to no head.

S- Wet horse blanket and subdued red fruit. Pronounced funk in the nose.

T- Sour cherries at the outset. Tart red fruit, strawberries? Mild funk. Finishes tart with a mildly puckering aftertaste. Exquisite!

M- Medium to light body with low carbonation.

O- A wonderful beer! Perfect marriage of tart, sour fruit and funky, barnyard characteristics. Wish this was available all the time. I wouldn't tire of it ever. Highly recommended!
