Handpump at Moeder Lambic. The fellow that coaxed this from the cask informed me that it's a slightly different recipe than the bottled kriek, there being more cherries in this version.

And right he was. A three dimensional cherry flavor, tart and dry, fills the mouth. It's tempered with a miniscule amount of oak. Indescribable ecstasy.

They offer this by the glass or the "cruchon," a 1L serving vessel. A tantalizing prospect, but I think it's intended for multiple people.

On cask at Moeder Lambic Fontainas. My first stop upon arrival in Belgium. This actually happened.

To say this beer is gorgeous is an understatement. A stunning ruby hue that sits underneath an everlasting pillow of lavender foam (picture forthcoming).

The smell is wonderful and inviting, with that distinguishable and inimitable cantillon scent. Lots of fresh cherries lead the way, with additional notes of yeast, tartness, funk.

The flavor takes it up a notch. Sweet and sour cherries. So fresh and delicious. Just teeming with cherries and cherry juice. Amazing.

The mouthfeel is one of the best I have ever experienced in a beer of any style. Creamy and silky smooth. Each sip lingers on the palate for several minutes.

I only made it to this establishment once, but I stayed for several hours and was able to enjoy a few pours of this. Well worth the trip. Cantillon is my favorite brewery, and this beer was well worth the effort.

On draft - served in a Cantillon tulip

Enjoyed at Chez Moeder Lambic Sint-Gilles in early June 2012.

A: Deep red. 2.5+ (frothy pink) fingernail head.

S: Smells of cherry tartness and touch of sweetness. Soft, dry funk as well with touch of oak. Heavenly!

T: Unripe cherry mostly here, but a nice touch of mild (fresh fruit - strawberry + raspberry) sweetness too. Soft oak with classic Cantillon funk and must. This beer is very dry, but oh so enjoyable. Mellow, smooth, and very refreshing!

M: Medium bodied with loads of carbonation. Perfect!

O: Nice, smooth, and very easy to enjoy! another superb beer from Jean and well worth the trip to Moeder Lambic.

On tap at Moeder Lambic. Pour is transparent ruby red with a dark pink head and tight bubbles the sit forever. The nose is very singular, huge cherries and little else. Light dusty notes try to hit you up front but are faded by huge ripe cherries. The taste has a bit more, notes of oak and a faint dustiness. These flavors are again overpowered by a huge ripe cherry and moderate sourness. The body is light and pretty soft on the palate with a lively prickly carbnatoin throughout and a rather dry finish. Very tasty and easy to drink but a touch singular.

On cask at Moeder Lambic Fontainas a few weeks ago during our trip to Belgium. Served in a Cantillon tulip. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a beautiful bright, bright red with an everlasting white pink head. Once that eventually fades, there is loads of lacing. The nose brings forward some restrained funk and loads of fresh, tart cherries. Really impressive. Good acidity coming throughout plus strong cherry flavor and a light tartness. Lactic acid throughout. Light-medium body with moderate carbonation. Super-smooth and uber-enjoyable.

On cask at Moeder Lambic Fontainas into a Cantillon tulip.

A: Striking. Clear garnet body under an otherworldly two fingers of rose-pink foam. Terrific retention for a Lambic. This is one of the most singularly gorgeous beers I've ever seen.

S: Cheer limeade. Super big, sweet, vanilla-tinged cherries, followed by some solid citric acidity and a touch of Cantillon funk - hay and green apple. Very nice.

T: Follows the nose, but with the sourness leading in to the rich cherries. Sticky vanilla finish, with a bit of earthy funk. Excellent.

M: Sticky medium body, very light carbonation. Feels like it's from a cask, which of course it is.

O: This beer was just so memorably gorgeous and delicious that I had to use the Overall category to bump it up a little - even though I thought it could have been improved slightly (a bit less stickiness in the body and perhaps a bit more tartness from the cherries themselves), it was still probably the single best Kriek I've ever had, and the appearance alone was worth more than the 5% it gets these days. If you get the chance to order this beer, don't pass it up.

Cheers!
