Lambic - Unblended |  5.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
From the brewery's website: "Although it is a spontaneous fermentation beer, the Iris is very different from the Lambic. The amber colour and the bitter and slightly caramelized taste make it a complex beer."

Labeled 05, bottled in 07 according to the cork.

I feel like this beer should have a nice head, and it does not. Other than that, it is attractive. A cloudy pale copper, with a small head that recedes immediately to a halo.

nicely tart and sour on the nose. This is full of green apple notes, with a bit of mustiness. Some pear as well, with tons of oak scent.

This does not taste nearly as delightful as it smells, sadly. There is a lot of tartness and that musty blanket flavor, with some nice sour apple up front that fades and is followed by a weird overripe fruit whang. Great at first, then just bitter and weird. I'm not hugely familar with true lambics, so maybe I haven't got my palate around them, but I tend to like sour and funky beers better than I like this. The flavors come in waves and don't mesh terribly well.

... OK, I'm upgrading. The flavors blend much better as it warms, and the unpleasantness I was getting is gone. It's gone from a strange bitter and rotten finish to a nice sour finish. Some citric and spice notes are coming out nicely, too. Lesson -- let this one air out and warm a bit before sipping. It's still not great, though.

Mouthfeel is very nice. A medium to light body with plentiful sharp carbonation despite the lack of head.

I'll finish it, and may buy another to compare, as I feel this one may not be the best representation.

Poured from 750ml into tulip glass

A- a murky brownish tan. Nothing impressive. Lots of foam that lasts and lasts.

S- this is the best part. Lots of fruitiness with a funkyness that makes your cheeks pucker before the first sip.

T- it starts off delicious. Again lots of fruit and a sourness that that wasn't as puckering as i expected it to be. It remembered me of a cider a little bit. Then there is this strange taste on the back. It's bitter and funky, and completely ruined the taste for me.

M- full bodied. Tenses up your cheeks. Very nice mouthfeel.

O- that weird bitterness on the back end of the beer completely ruined it for me. If it wasn't for that then this beer would have been amazing.

This has a refreshing tart taste and a very strong and lovely fruity scent. The fruity taste comes through at first. A malty grape taste and some lemon/apple, but a good floral finish. A bit of a hoppy bite, but not much. Good, dry finish. Very enjoyable.

Sadly I didn’t think to look at the year on the bottle, but it was brought from Belgian by some friends of mine who live there. So this will be of whatever the local-bought variety would be and they purchased in December 2013 timeframe.
