Cantillon Saint Lamvinus
750mL bottle poured into a snifter
Date smeared, but I believe it says October 2011

Thanks to RuckusDu for sending this one over in a trade.

A: Pours a hazy dark ruby red with 1/2 fingers width of light pink head, which is fizzy, dissipates away very quickly and leaves no appreciable lacing.  4

S: Smell is quiet funky, with a big tart presence as well.  Besides the huge barnyard funk, the accompanying sours characters include notes of sour grape, lemon, and sour cherry.  4.5

T: Much more tart than even the nose implies.  A wonderful degree of sourness!  Lemon-lime, sour apple, sweet cherry notes on the finish, the faintest hint of oak,  and a touch of a sea salt character. Awesome.  Not as many red grape characters as I anticipated, but great none the less.  I can't emphasize enough how sour this is, and I love it.  5

M/D: Puckering sourness, light body, and heavy carbonation come together to give an absolutely delightful, vibrant mouthfeel.  Crisp, refreshing, and high drinkability.  4.5

O: Overall, this was my first Cantillon experience and it was a treat.  Great degree of sourness, with enough other characters, notably barnyard funk, to keep it from being one dimensional. Very well done.  I highly recommend and would drink this again any chance I got.  4.5

Note:  I was a little concerned as when I received this from the shipping trade, it had clearly had some leakage with some beer seeping out and coating the outside of the bottle, even with the cork and cap.  When I opened it up a couple weeks later there was some fluid in between the cork and top of cap, and the cork was soaked through.  I was afraid it was going to be a flat mess or have some other unappealing character as a result.  Luckily it did not, so just a heads up if that happens to anyone else, dont fret!  Your nectar of the gods is likely just fine!

From a 2011 750 ml bottle into a large wine glass.

A-Poured a beautiful, light claret color. Almost plum colored. Complex and very vinous looking. Not much carbonation or head to speak off. A little collar of white head hangs around.

S-Tart cherries and dark, supple fruit. A touch of vanilla and oak...again, quite vinous. A little funk, but not a ton that I could detect. No alcohol smells.

T-Pleasantly tart, but really well balanced. The fruit flavors are concentrated and complex. I picked up cherries, green apples, and red wine flavors with a touch of oak. Not particularly funky or alcoholic.

M-Prickly carbonation, but beautifully balanced. Pretty dry from start to finish.

O-Really enjoyable. One of my favorite beers ever and easily my favorite of the style so far.

750ml (October 2011) into a tulip.

A: Light ruby body with a large light pink head, which recedes to nothing quickly.

S: Horseblanket, fruit-laced tartness, a bit of cheese. Soft oak rounds it out. A fruity, acidic aroma comes out as it wamrs. Very funky.

T: Lots of woody funk and tartness. Gamey, tart wild berry. Soft grape sweetness comes out as it warms, integrating very smoothly with the lactic sourness in a juicy way. Very dry and sour, with the grapes offering the slightest bit of balancing sweetness.

M: Light with tingly carbonation.

O: This beer is very funky and sour, and therefore one must devote one's full attention to the grapes to see what they're doing here - adding depth without distracting from the intense character of the base beer.
