330ml bottle from The Cave, Glasgow:

Deep, mahogany brown on closer inspection. It is topped with a foamy, light brown coloured head about half a centimetre tall which manages to hold very well indeed, particularly for the strength of the beer; it barely budges other than a very slight initial reduction of no more than a millimetre.

Rich malts to begin along with a strong, dark chocolate aroma that is also quite rich and hints at some sweetness along with some sugar and a bit of cocoa. There is some darker fruits present, notably cherries and there is also some roasted malts and a faint amount of alcohol towards the end.

A nice mix of cherries and various other darker fruits. There is also a good blend of rich malts, chocolate and sweet, roasted malts that are pretty well balanced and seem to work well together. I also seemed to taste a slightly milky flavour somewhere near the middle and some slight bitterness right at the end.

Medium in body, slightly tangy and with a nice fruity character. There is medium to high carbonation and a nice amount of alcohol lingering in the background too.

Quite an unusually fruity stout but a very nice one nonetheless with a lot going on, especially with the depth of character in the smell. This one is certainly up there with the best stouts I have tried to date.

11.2 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark red color with nice opacity. The head is a huge, foaming three finger khaki color that descends to one finger after a while. Plenty of lacing is left behind, as well.

S: Big, massive, hugely sweet chocolate. Some dark fruits, as well. Actually, come to think about it, there's a minor whiff of sour cherries - infection, perhaps? We shall see. I still enjoy the aroma greatly, but that foamy head should have been a giveaway.

T: The flavor takes on more of a roasted barley and coffee bean tone, especially at first, while waves of chocolaty sweet and - unfortunately - tart cherries seemingly via an onsetting infection. After a while, the tartness takes center stage. Some herbal hop flavors also try to pop up in the finish, as well. So what we have here is a lightly soured stout, and it kind of works. Not perfectly by any means, but there's enough sweetness here to keep it in check.

M: Quite light in its loafers with wimpy carbonation. There's actually an esophageal burn and a bit of stomach turning which completely tanks the mouthfeel score for me. On the palate proper, it's not particularly dry, but nicely bittersweet'n'sour; whatever the blue hell that's supposed to mean.

O: Infected - it just has to be. But thank Odin it's a minor infection that actually gives it a pleasant twist, instead of twisting my mouth sideways and dissolving my tongue. This clearly isn't the final product as it's intended to be - thankfully I have a penchant for a good Flemish-style ale along side my stout tooth, so I still think it's quite okay.

If you're bottle has "123881841" on it, just be wary.

[Suggested Glassware: Snifter]

The pour was a murky pitch black with an average (1-2 finger) chocolate shake brown creamy head that was mostly diminishing, down to a thin film and medium collar that pretty much lasted throughout and had good sticky lacing.

The aroma was of a roasted dark malt, mild resin hops and a leathery yeast with notes of chocolate, dried dark fruit (prunes) and a nice mild alcohol tinge.

The taste was very malty and just a tad sweet with a hint of chocolate early on, then progressed with a mild bitterness, a touch of dark fruit and a bold coffee note towards the finish. The flavor hung on for a decent duration after the swallow with a smooth choco-coffee taste and a mild alcohol warming sensation at the end.

Mouthfeel was medium in body with a thin oily texture and a medium carbonation.

Overall this was a nice a roasty brew, although I did find it to be just a little thin for a stout it did possess very nice taste and a great drinkability...

Basically pitch black in colour, finger of tan head, good retention, solid lace as well. Smell is of dark chocolate, coffee and a huge roasted malt bill, bits of dark fruit come and go, milk chocolate as it warmed up. Taste is fairly roasted up front with milk chocolate, moderate sweetness, mild bitterness as well as some coffee and dark fruit in the finish. Medium carbonation, medium full body, nice full creamy feel here. Nice stuff and quite drinkable overall, certainly got my $2.05 worth on this one.

Poured it and then sat down to drink it while reading the reviews on here. Noticed the first swig full of flavor and inviting. It was all downhill from there. It started getting sickly sweet or something offensive. I'm not sure if it was the mouthfeel or the flavors. Before a gag reflex set in, I rushed to the sink and poured the glass and what remained in the bottle down the sink. I switched to a Sam Adams Winter Lager but that would not enough to cleanse my palate. There's a reason a large bottle of this is only $3.50. Stay away.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/9/2011. Pours pitch black color with a nice 2 finger dense mocha head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some nice soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of raisin, apple, dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, molasses, herbal, light char, coffee, and earthiness. Nice aromas with good strength and balance; quite a bit on the fruity side. Taste of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, char, caramel, raisin, molasses, apple, light coffee, herbal, and earthiness. Fair amount of herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, molasses, light fruit, and herbal on the finish for a good bit. Good balance of roasted flavors with light herbal hoppiness; slight amount of cloying flavors on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a creamy, chalky, and slick mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming present on the finish. Overall this is a good foreign stout. Some nice robust roasted flavors with good complexity; quite smooth to sip on. A bit cloying at times, but is a nice sipper.

Into a pint glass:

A: dark brown colored body that yields a nice offf-white/tan/mocha three finger head that slowly dies to a one finger and stays for most of the brew. Really nice spider web lacing graces the sides of the pint glass and leaving some nice rings.

S: based around the cocoa, nuts, coffee and malts.

T: basically the same adding a bit of nice roastiness and letting the alcohol come slightly in as it warms. The sweetness becomes a bit subdued.

M: medium with nothing harsh on the tongue and comes across very smooth, slightly silky.

O: I like it, and with the price ($2.59 for a bomber), I would definitely come back to it.

A: Dark brown, with brown foam. Looks like dark chocolate, or coffee.
S: Smells of roasted cocoa, nuts, and perhaps a little malty.
T: I taste the cocoa and caramel, but my taste buts keep getting some roasted nuts in there as well. An odd, but delicious combination of bitter and sweet. That 8.8% ABV isn't even noticable.
M: Not very heavily carbonated. Silky
O: This isn't a beer you drink 4-5 of. This beer is heavy and mind blowingly delicious. Once I stop trying beers, I imagine I'll come back to this one a few times.

11.2 oz bottle into a snifter

A: Pours very black, and looks fairly viscous. About a finger an a half of brown head which dissipates somewhat quickly. Looks like a nice stout.

S: Here's where the trouble starts. Smell is quite strange. Somewhere between skunky and slightly sour. Highly grainy. Not good.

T: Grainy, with a bad lactic sourness in there. Pretty weak roasted flavor. Some dark fruit, dates. Crappy, highly tannic coffee on the finish.

M: Might not have been bad here if it wasn't for the high astringency.

O: Not pleasant. Drainpour. Big disappointment. Pricepoint is the only reason behind the 2.5 here. Really sad I bought two bottles.

Average porter. Average price. Average... ho hum... blah... move on... If you want something interesting, certainly don't look here. This beer is a porter... sure... it's a porter... yup... it sure is a porter! I'm pretty certain it's a porter. It tastes and looks and smells like a porter. It's a porter allright! I'm bored of this porter. It's unremarkable and average all the way through. Certainly an excellent find if it's on a bargain shelf but I'm sure you can find better tasting porters near you and not from halfway across the world... Unless you live in Sri Lanka!

Poured from bottle into Trappitst Westvleteren tulip glass. No idea the of the bottling date, my guess is fall 2011. Pour yields a dark brown almost black color, with frothy light brown head -- looks like a thick coffee. Two finger head recedes leaving some lacing and a thin layer of head; a bit more than a black a coffee, with a lighter head. Smell is not too overwhelming, not much there. Coffee and oatmeal aromas present, with a hint of licorice. Taste is nice and clean, coffee and oatmeal is persistent, but nothing too over the top. Hints of burnt flavors on the end. It is roasty. Mouthfeel is very clean and smooth, no bite. Feels like coffee roasts with no lingering harshness or bitterness. Overall this is a decent stout. Not my first choice or "go-to" by any means, but something I enjoy. If you like stouts, Lion Stout is something nice and easy to try.

I've been looking at this beer in stores for well over a year and finally committed to grabbing a bottle. Poured into a snifter.

A - Dark chocolate brown with a massive tan head. Seems a bit less viscous than other stouts. Interesting.

S - There things here: caramel, chocolate and a bit of coffee. The combination leads to a rich coffee aroma that is not overpowering, good stuff!

T - Starts smooth with a silky texture. The beer moves on following some rich caramel malts into a bit of bitter/tart notes from the coffee. ABV is well hidden with just a pinch of warmth on the back end.

M - A medium body that has very little carbonation (which is a good thing to compliment the silky composition). Drinks fairly heavy but soft to the palette. I like it.

O - Very surprised with this beer, for I anticipated for it to much worse! A unique blend of flavors makes this one to try for sure. A fine way to mix up my normal rotation of stouts. Bravo!

Opaque, black body with a thick, creamy head. Sweet chocolate, cocoa nibs, roasted malt grains make up the core of the smell. Rich, smooth mouthfeel. Silky. Chocolate, hop bitterness, and a rather strong alcohol flavor dominates the taste.

A decent, strong stout. A little heavy on the alcohol taste, but otherwise is a well-rounded dark ale.

Poured from a 330ml can with a best by date of Jan 2013 into a tulip glass.

Pours a very dark brown, bordering on black color with a nice 2 finger tan, cappuccino colored head that recedes quickly to leave a film across the top of the beer. The aroma is dark bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee beans and some molasses and brown sugar notes. On the palate this beer shows the 8.8% with a slight warming sensation that plays nicely with the strong flavor profile of the beer. The flavors i get are burnt sugar, molasses, black stale coffee and a hint of cream. Very roast and malty with a surprisingly refreshing dry finish that leaves traces of hop bitterness on the finish. The mouthfeel is dry, slightly astringent and has a much thinner body than i expected. Overall, this might be a "summer" stout as it is bordering on imperial in my book with this ABV. I used to pass this up all the time in the states but now that I am in a beer wasteland in Switzerland, this made its way into my fridge. Worth a shot.

A: Pours a very delectible blackish haze with an even more appealing one inch of brownish head. However, the retention of the head is deceiving. At first it seems to cling quite nicely but then it turns "turtle" (a.k.a. pulls head into shell).

S: Surprisingly I'm not too impressed by the aroma. It may be because I'm used to it on draft and not a can, but it still lacks the true caramelly essence.

T: This is good, but not great. A nice malty taste comes through, but it still lacks the true "coffee" kind of taste I was expecting. There is a bit of sweetness that overcoats that coffee flavor, but it's still not too overpowering.

M: First it feels a little over carbonated, but then it seems to lack true character at the end. A little too inconsistent for me. It's still fairly decent for a stout.

O: It's a great beer to have if you're preference is malt or dark, but if you're a hop-head (like me) I'd tread carefully. Still give it a shot and let the taste buds experience something new.

Poured a huge head of coffee caramel foam in a tulip glass. Dissipates slowly, leaving an attractive film and lacing. Visible carbonation. Colour is jet black.

Nose is really rich. Lot of thick molasses, strong coffee. Roast malt and chocolate flavour comes through. Quite a thick and rich aroma.

Flavour is pleasing and complex. Lot of smooth chocolate, and a bit of tartness. Coffee and slight smoky roastiness also pronounced. The sweetness is present. Finish is subtle and smooth with lingering notes of coffee and a bit dry. Incredibly drinkable and alcohol is not at all present.

This one was a very pleasant surprise. It drinks very nicely, and I found the flavours all blended very nicely. It does drink like quite a full/heavy beer. For the style I think it is quite a solid representation and worth buying again.

Aroma: Very prominent molasses. Moderate black malt. Some chocolate and lactose. No coffee. Bold aroma. No alcohol. Slightly medicinal or fresh paint.

Appearance: Black, opaque. Head is medium brown and pours small. Good retention and tons of lacing. Lots of yesty sediment stuck to the bottom of the bottle.

Taste: Lots of molasses here too. Sweet lactose, some milk chocolate, little actual cocoa. Bold flavors overall here.

Mouthfeel: Medium bosdy. There is some carbonation, although it's very smooth and hard to detect. Finishes mildly dry.

Overall: Unique taste on this one. The high molasses sets it apart.

Consumed May 3rd, 2012 at The Tin Cow, Pensacola, FL. Poured into a pint glass.

Extremely dark brown with a finger-high mocha colored head.

Aroma is a little on the red grape tip with some subtle roasted malts.

Flavor is a mess. Chalky, thin, weird. Red grapes, weak, lightly roasted malts, mineral notes. Low bitterness.

Unremarkable mouthfeel, save for the chalky, chewy bit.

Think I'll take a pass on this one next time I see it.

Huge frothy head, nearly 50% head. Lot's of lacing. Really looks the part of a beautiful stout.

The taste is a bit sweet for me when comparing it to other stouts. Coffee is the predominant flavor and alcohol is the predominant smell.

The price and the ABV of this, while having a very strong drinkability, make this a solid choice. I would certainly drink this beer again.
