Slightly hazy golden with a modest white head. Aroma is banana and a hint of clove, with light orange notes. Flavor reveals a wheat backbone, mineral character, banana, a hint of orange zest, clove, coriander. The finish is dry and lightly bitter. Carbonation is higher than I'd prefer.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a stemmed tulip glass.

Pours cloudy and golden in color with a tall, white, cloud-like head, great retention and ‘structure’. The head finally settles to a few ‘meringue’ islands and leaves loads of lacing. The nose is an enticing mix of bananas, cloves, caramel malt, yeast, raw dough and orange peel. On the palate, the banana, yeast and dough come through with hints of cloves and spice as well as a nice wheat character. The body of the beer is medium-light (in a good way) and there is lots of carbonation keeping this beer light, bubbly and incredibly refreshing. Overall, this is a great example of the style as well as a subtle reminder that there are other options for a beer on a hot summer’s day other than watered-down, thin IPA’s (opps, I mean session IPA’s). Bring on the lawn mower!!

On tap at Cooper's Tavern. 16.9oz served in an Ayinger hefeweizen glass 7/5/2014.

A- Hazy straw yellow body with a lovely three finger white head that reaches the top of the hefeweizen glass just perfectly. Long retention life, lots and lots of rings of lacing. Beautiful beer.

S- Bubblegum, cloves, grainy wheat sweetness and some earthy noble hops. Classic hefeweizen nose profile.

F- Lemons and bananas open up the field, with some cloves and bubble gum rounding things out in the middle, finishing up with a mix of raw vanilla and bready malt sweetness that is the hallmark of a good German hefeweizen. Excellent.

M- Medium in body yet very drinkable. Full of flavour but not fatiguing at all. Carbonation is on-spot. Finish is a fairly complex breadiness with some lemon zest and bananas. Excellent.

O- I could drink plenty of this in one sitting yet enjoy the flavours it brings to the table. Excellent hefeweizen that's not difficult to get; it's not Weihenstephan but this still comes highly recommended from me.

Picked up a bottle at the Oak Barrel in Hagerstown at a great price, had not tried it and love hefes. Has a good look and excellent smell. The flavor is outstanding. As a big fan of here style I am disappointed that I have not tried this one before. But I will certainly be getting it again and regularly.

Cellar temperature in a weizen glass.

It has a solid two fingers of a rocky white head that dissipates with urgency. The body is a hazy golden straw color.

I can decipher a lot of banana, yeast, and lemon in the aroma. There's also a kind of musty earthiness which interests me.

The flavor gives off lemon, green apples, and banana at first, transitioning into the expected lovely yeast and bread finish of any proper hefeweizen.

It has high carbonation and a light, crispy clean body.

To put it simply, a stellar hefeweizen, brewed by the books.

500ml bottle into a goblet.

A: Pours a cloudy golden color. The head is a finger high, with a white shade and a fluffy texture. Natch, retention isn't very good, and almost no lacing is left on the glass. It also looks like intensely carbonated. In fairness, it would look more pleasing in a weizen glass, but I don't feel like cleaning mine right now...

S: Banana. Cloves. Banana-y cloves. Clove-y bananas. This is pretty much the textbook hefeweizen aroma, pulled off to sheer excellence. There seems to be a very defined vanilla cream note missing in so many weizens (even Weihenstephaner's), which is enough to send it over the top.

T: It tastes like a textbook classic, too. Aside from banana and cloves (this one seems a bit more banana-heavy), there are also notes of vanilla cream. Wheat appears on the finish. Some noble bitterness becomes intertwined with the back end after a few swigs, giving it a fantastic balance of flavors.

M: Time to complain: it's too fizzy. Everything else about the feel is done right - soft yet medium bodied texture, finish that hits a good compromise between sweet and dry - but there's so much carbonation that it comes off harshly. I can't stop belching when I drink this, and it's friggen' annoying.

O: This is like drinking a banana split. Only problem is that it's overcarbonated. Really, who cares? It smells awesome, tastes awesome, and drinks awesome.

This unfiltered classic hefeweizen poured a deep gold straw yellow with a huge white head that didn’t take on the cloudy opaque texture until I poured the sediment from the bottom of the bottle. I left about a quarter of the beer, swirled it around to activate the sediment and continued to pour it into this wonderful looking hefeweizen. The aroma was much fruitier than most of the traditional hefe’s with the signature spice but the bubblegum & banana notes were missing. Not to fear, the first sip brought the banana notes to the forefront, but with more of a fruity balance along with the spiciness. The smooth and creamy mouthfeel delivered this Hefe masterpiece to my palate where the wonderful flavors danced on my tongue. Very light yet full flavored the Ayinger is another excellent hefeweizen and right up there with the Weihenstephaner.

Re-reviewing this beer after over a year without seeing it. Purchased 500 ml bottle from LCBO for $3.95.served a little colder than I'd like into glassware.

Appearance - slow, gentle pour still yields nearly two and a half fingers of dense yet little fluffy head. Remarkable lacing left on the sides of the glass. Hazy and rich golden yellow pour. Lots of bubbles. Good head retention too. Really attractive looking.

Smell - banana and clove with a doughy base are the primary aromas. There's a bit of pepper in there too before the banana and especially the bread overwhelm. Aromatic without being over-saturated.

Taste - starts of light with some wheat flavours, the transitions to a rich banana taste before finishing spicy with clove and pepper.

Mouthfeel - very well carbonated, yet incredibly light body that beckons for more. Smooth as hell too.

Overall - a world class brew that in my mind stands up against any of the German hefeweizens and more than holds its own. Remarkably light bodied even compared with others in the style, as the only other I've tried that can match Ayinger in this respect is Weihenstephaner. A perfect beer to consume on a hot sunny Canada day. Cheers!
