The straw/pale golden body with a big pure white foamy head is a one-of-a-kind, in a league of its own. I drank the first one too fast to notice the lace, so I popped open another and noticed some sticky lace. The floral hop and lightly roasted malt lasts a good long time. The lightly roasted malt is heavier than it appears and possesses a pleasing sweetness. A bountiful sharp-edged bitterness is lightly tempered with caramel notes. A faint note of vanilla is detected. Balances slightly, although the hoppiness remains dominant. Hmmm, grilled bratwurst would hit the spot right about now!

Appearance - This bier poured a beautiful, light hazy yellow in color with some light carbonation and a gorgeous, pitting head.

Smell - The grain was terrific at the nose. It is smooth and lightly balanced with traditional German hops.

Taste - The grain is a real winner at the taste. It is sweet and tutty-fruity. The light hop balance from the nose shows up nicely at the tongue. Well done.

Mouthfeel - This one is light to medium-bodied and expertly balanced. The long, sweet finish leaves the drinker begging for more.

Drinkability - This is my idea of a good German lager and makes a great celebratory prost!

Update - I decided to re-review this with a vintage 2005 and found it exactly, and I mean exactly, like I described it in September of 2004. This really is a good standard for the German style.

Update - I sampled an '06 vintage for review. I'd say it leans more towards medim-bodied at this point but otherwise wouldn't change a thing from my original review. Right on!

Update - I sampled a 2011 vintage and this really is a terrific bier. The grain is strong yet incredibly sensual and the hops, usually too light for Americans' taste, are actually quite strong here and create an expertly balanced brew.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 500ml bottle into a tall Pilsener glass. The abv is listed on the back label (5.5%) but there is no freshness date.

Appearance: It has an extremely clear and light yellow gold color with tons of bubbly carbonation. From the pour I got a tall white foamy head. This head is light, fluffy and slowly settles down to a light wispy thin covering. On the way down the glass it leaves some spotty lacing.

Smell: The nose is modest and offers mellow notes of biscuity pale malt with a nice spicy/floral hop backing.

Taste/Palate: It has a light snappy flavor. Its pale bready maltiness is balanced by spicy floral hops that add pleasant bitterness and a very slight sourness. The finish is dry and crisp on a light to moderate palate.

Notes: Overall it's a very good easy drinking beer with excellent balance.

Presentation: 17 oz euro brown bottle with no freshness date.

Appearance: Slightly hazy straw with a lasting lace from the carbonation.

Smell: Herbal and bready in the nose with a hint of lemon.

Taste: A sublime smoothness and a well textured malt mouthfeel cradle the delicate light to medium body. Lot of malt flavour ... grain, touch of husk, bready and a mellow raw honey like sweetness. Just enough hops to balance and not clash with the impressive malt character. A herbal hop flavour and a small amount of residual sweetness make up the finish ... though the hops become more prevelant as the beer drys out.

Notes: First brewed in 1978 in celebration of the 100th anniversary for Brewery Aying, a great choice for this creation. A wonderful malt profile. This beer makes you crave for more ... very appetizing. Went well with some dark rye bread and mild goat cheese.

I liked this beer the first time I tried it and I think it’s still worth a try. I got the current bottle at the German Gourmet in Falls Church. VA., which I visited for the first time this week. If German cuisine is your thing, this is an unbelievable store. In particular, the beer and wine selection is huge. The Jahrhundert pours a yellow straw color with a slight haze to it. There is a very nice malt/hops aroma coming out of the glass. The flavor is well balanced between those components right through the finish. It’s a little spritzier than I’d like but some might find that energizing after a few. Good stuff.

Reviewed after enjoying a 4 pack that I found at one of the Liquor Barn stores in Louisville, Ky. 11.2 oz brown bottle pours a clear yellow body, similar to apple juice, with two fingers of white head. Active carbonation is evident in the glass. Good head retention and moderate patch lace is left on the glass.
Mouthfeel has a light medium body and is alive with crisp carbonation.
Taste is interesting, with a biscuity and bready sweet malt that is mostly caramel, balanced with a spicy and grassy hops presence. Toasty grain notes are complimented with a breadiness that is almost sourdough in presence. There is an odd, but fleeting, metallic note that is unpleasant, like carbonated corn syrup out of a can, but it is quickly gone. Finishes with a floral and spicy hops bitterness that lingers for several minutes.
Drinkability is very fine. This Ayinger has an interesting complexity for a lager style. This is an excellent session brew. Wish I had purchased another 4 pack.

Appearance: poured a mostly clear , yellow / gold color , with a half inch of white head.

Smell: nice maltiness , kind of cookielike , nice grassy and earthy hop , slight hay.

Taste: Medium body full of pale malt flavor , some grains , slight tea like taste , lots of grassy green hop , just a nice balanceing bitterness , finishes with a hint of cookie sweetness and an earthy grassy aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: very smooth and medium bodied.

Drinkability: A very drinkable lager that hooks me right in. Love the smoothness , the tasty malt , and the herbal / grassy hop qualities. I feel like im in Bavaria!

Poured into a pilsner glass, very light golden color, nice fluffy white head.Looks very tempting, grainy, slight sweet malty, hint of yeast aroma.A bready, slighty grainy taste, not a lot of hop presence.A light moutnfeel, with just the right amount of bitterness to finish. An execellent session beer. Would really be nice on a hot summer day.

500ml bottle poured into an Ayinger 500ml glass.

Pours a very light straw/yellow color with a nice pillowy white head along with some fine lacing. Nose is yeasty and crisp, there's a light hop note that's very delicate.

Taste is very well balanced, it's light and crisp with a nice light hop bite and slightly spicy yeast note on the finish. The mouthfeel is nice and full, smooth and a bit sharp. very well done.

Nose: Light malts, bread, some noble hop spiciness, no esters, clean, a little sweetness, no diacetyl, no DMS.
Hazy pale gold, 1” off-white foam collar dissipates to a thin film, leaves delicate lacing, chill haze partially cleans up as the beer warms.
Flavor: malt and hop, melanoidins, rich malt flavors, good balance of malt and hop, touch of malt sweetness followed up by a touch of balancing hop in the after taste, clean, no esters, no diacetyl, hop and malt after taste.
Medium body, medium carbonation, creamy smooth, no warmth, no astringency.

Clear golden lager, rising up to a wonderful puffy head. Absolutely delicious. Ayinger does it again. I love this brewery. Clean crisp taste, smooth, flavorful. Ayinger brews (this one included) remind me gently of apples. Complex taste that grows bolder with each sip. Leaves you feeling light as a feather - most beers can make you a bit logy. Disappears from my glass very quickly, too quickly. If it was cheaper I'd probably drink it all the time. Man, if Anheuser Busch could learn how to make a beer like this, they could rule the world. Excellent complement to a weird pineapple chicken dish that I had.

This was a very fine looking lager. It pours out of the bottle as a wonderrful light golden color. There was a nice foamy off-white head. The smell and taste were somewhat neuatral: neither hoppy or malty. This beer was not bad but it is not something I would search out again.

11.2oz Bottle with typical Ayinger labeling. Into a new DFH pint glass.

Pours a hazy golden with a one finger head of white bubbles. Head fades to a covering and leaves spotty lacing. Gentle carb streams.

Smells of fruits. Apple mostly, sweet raisin. Very similar to their dunkelweizen.

Tastes like a helles combined with a dunkel. You have a malt up front, followed by the apple and fruit flavors, which fade to the helles lemony and slightly bitter hop finish.

Nice gentle tickling from carbonation and a slightly wet feel.

Fairly drinkable, although a little more robust and heavier than a regular lager.

Very pale straw color, clearish, and a nice 1/2 inch frothy head that leaves crystalline spidery lacing. Crisp nose, hoppy with generous amounts of mown hay. Very smooth malt impression, fresh nuts and honey with a sense of lightly toasted grain. Lower carbonation than I expected, lends a creamy mouthfeel. Decent hop steeping near the finish provides a nice crispness, but overall, I give this concoction marks on the malt side. Just a very pleasant beer, one that I can imagine drinking in quantity in the warmer months. Thanks to the guys at 1st Grand Ave. Liquors for selling me one of four preview bottles.

Appearance: Slight haze going on with a yellow straw color light golden with a nice sized well retained white head, lacing is nice and evenly scattered big webbed patterns. Aroma: Some very gentle but evident hoppiness going on along with a signature grainy. Taste: Crisp smooth and refreshing describe this Jahrhundert - Bier or Hundred Year Beer, a creamy sweetness very flavorful when compared to other beers that pour this light in color, the bitterness is tame but balances the beer so well with the no flavors dominating here, very nice. Mouthfeel: It's not light bodied believe it or not nice mouthfeel with a slow even carbonation. Drinkability: Is superb for any German lager fan, this one hit's the spot after a stressful day with two exams.

Clear light gold with plenty of rising carbonation bubbles. Semi-durable white head.

Plain and simple, malt dominant aroma.
Mundane taste seems tame even for style.
Nice feel with a medium-light body and medium carbonation.

O: A disappointing offering from a sometimes excellent brewery.
