Appearance - Pours a cloudy and darkened honey hue with a white 2 finger head. Good retention, leaving behind a patchy layer of suds on the surface. Very little in the way of lace.
Smell - Clove spice, caramel, ripened banana and hints of bubblegum make this a formidable smelling dunkel.
Taste - Hits on strong notes of spicy clove, while lesser notes of caramel and banana add depth. Sparse touches of bubblegum poke through. The finish is a battle between soft caramel notes and spice form the clove character.
Mouthfeel - Light to medium body with an aggressive carbonation that bites at the lips and tongue.. A touch of diacetyl butteriness gives a it a smooth, gliding flow down the throat.
Overall - I'm not sure if I like this more than the Weihenstephaner dunkel, but it's close. I'd love to do a side by side, and I'd enjoy doing it. Us Americans have the one up on Europe so far as most ales are concerned, but we've yet to touch on the efforts of our Eastern comrades when it comes to hefes and dunkels. There's been some commendable attempts (Sierra's Kellerwies comes to mind), but we're not there yet. This dunkel is proof we've got a hell of a way to go.

Poured into an IPA glass. Don't ask.
Look: Murky caramel body. Cream colored head with decent retention. Light lacing.
Aroma: Buttered bread, toffee, and some old world European skunkiness.
Taste: Wheat, toasted bread, butter, caramel.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, smooth.
Overall: Probably would get a perfect score if I had this fresh. Too many weird flavors from being an export.
