I’m in a bad mood, so this beer better be good. I won’t even begin to try and figure out how to pronounce it, but in the preliminary research I did… I want to go to Germany. If nothing more than the stein filled with beer. If I ever do (and I will) make it to Germany, I will make sure to go during Oktoberfest. They have celebrations here in the states, but there is NO WAY they are the same as those Europeans. Anyway, on with the beer.

The nose on this this is HUGE. It smacked me in the face before I could even pour a glass of this stuff. It has a very familiar nose, similar to a Blue Moon or any other wheat beer you might find. But after a sip of this stuff, I will never enjoy a Blue Moon again.

There are subtle similarities… but the aftertaste is so much smoother than that of a Blue Moon (and I use Blue Moon as that’s the most popular wheat beer here in the United States.) The ABV is a bit higher than a Blue Moon, but it’s not obvious. The aftertaste is quick, but the smoothness makes up for it. You are hit with hints of spice (a weak spice at that) long after the beer has been swallowed.

There is a slight carbonation on the back half of the tongue, but just like the aftertaste it’s quick. The smoothness of this beer makes up for anything else that could go wrong. It’s a lot better than a Blue Moon, and I would totally buy another bottle of this. But I really want to drink this out of a HUGE beer stein. Let’s make that happen this October, shall we? Bottoms up people!

Cellar temperature in a weizen glass.

A nice white, two-finger cloud of a head settles over a somewhat murky, fairly light reddish brown dunkel with carbonation streams rising upward.

It has a wonderful aroma of sweet, yeasty bread dough, caramel, raisins, vanilla, banana, and just a light touch of clove and perhaps some other spices.

The flavor is both sweet and tart, reminding me of banana bread and candied apples. The finish is a bit nutty and has the anticipated soothing breadiness German wheat beers traditionally have. There may be a little bit of clove, nutmeg, and cinnamon lingering on my palate. This isn't too unlike spiced fruitcake in flavor... or fruitBREAD.

Body is medium, carbonation high... but not too high.

Delicious dunkel.

A: Pours a cloudy copper color with a two finger thick creamy off-white head. The head reduces by about 25% but has great retention. There is significant lacing observed.

S - Cloves, banana and bubblegum explode on my nose. I can also detect some wheat which adds some character. Just another great nose from Ayinger.

T - nice notes that follow the nose, very wheaty beer with good fruit, clove, spice to compliment the bready body

M- Medium/light body and carbonation. Refreshing but not lifeless/weak bodied.

O: A really good weizen. Great for the weizen style, but I expected something a bit darker being a dunkel. Not upset by any means though.

Appearance:
Lightly hazed, golden oak colored body crowned with a generous, white head that holds on for awhile before dissolving to a small ring around the glass. Good visible carbonation.

Aroma:
Heavy clove and banana over a light, malty backbone. A hint of orange and ginger root with no traceable hop presence. Very welcoming.

Taste:
Again, heavy banana and clove. Sweet. Smooth malt and wet wheat character. Belgian candy syrup - typical affair for the style, but is of very high quality. No noticeable alcohol and a light metallic note on finish, but I have had this bottle for awhile so I'm not going to fault the brewery as I've never experienced it in this beer before.

Mouthfeel:
Smooth, light, and sweet. Light body. Medium to high levels of carbonation. Sweet finish. Refreshing!

Overall:
Another brilliant brew by the folks at Ayinger! A stellar companion for a hot summer day that is packed full of character. A must have for any beer fan.
