When the Germans say: Paulaner, Franziskaner, sonst nichts they forget something . . . Ayinger. Man, this is one heck of a beer. Delightfully fluffy wheat character balanced out by munich malts in a burnt-orange brew. I drank this guy so quickly, I got a tummy-ache from the carbonation. Couldn't recommend it highly enough. Yummy.

When I pour the brew the color is light amber almost orange. The color is quite bright for a Dunkel. It has a cloudy appearance that you would expect from unfiltered wheat beers. I like to slowly rotate the bottle after pouring a little into a glass. When you first pour the beer a large head forms at the top of the glass of about 2 inches. This quickly is gone though as the beer settles and leaves almost no trace on the glass.

The Ur-Weisse has a very complex aroma. At first pass I was drawn into the smells of fruit. Banana and apple stand out the most but I'm sure there are others that I cannot put my finger on directly. Investigating further I catch the aroma of cloves and yeast. All of these flavors blend perfectly and produce one of my favorite beer aromas.

The taste of the Ayinger Ur-Weisse is just perfect. This is an extremely light and easy to drink beer. You are immediately drawn to the taste of the fruits in the brew. You can definitely taste the yeast and malt also. It finishes very dry with little aftertaste.

A: Pours a cloudy copper color with a two finger thick creamy off-white head. The head reduces by about 25% but has great retention. There is significant lacing observed.

S - Cloves, banana and bubblegum explode on my nose. I can also detect some wheat which adds some character. Just another great nose from Ayinger.

T - nice notes that follow the nose, very wheaty beer with good fruit, clove, spice to compliment the bready body

M- Medium/light body and carbonation. Refreshing but not lifeless/weak bodied.

O: A really good weizen. Great for the weizen style, but I expected something a bit darker being a dunkel. Not upset by any means though.

The beer was light brown in color with a moderately thick hear that lasted a long time. It had a very gentle malt aroma with a mild clover smell. There was no hop smell. The malt flavors were prominent at first sip but finished with a spicy clove flavor. There is no bitterness nor hop flavor. The mouthfeel was creamy and full and had a high carbonation level which tingled the tongue. Dunkle Weizen is my FAVORITE beer so I am a little prejudice, but this is probably the best of style and the best style.

Ayinger..bottle say's "Authentic Bavarian Dunkel Weizen"...and it's a good one!
Appearance:Poured a cloudy medium orange hue, tight white head that left broken trails down the sides of the glass.
Smell:clovy esters, with whifffs citrus and melon.
Taste: Taste is exceptional, some ripe melon, followed by clove and fresh baked bread, with ghost-like vanilla and banana notes.
Mouthfeel: is bubbly and typically thin but creamy...very nice.
Drinkability: Are you kidding me?...I could drink this morning, noon and night! A very good example of the style, and if you like Dunkel Weizens don't miss a chance to grab a couple bottles of this!

Yow! Super duper beer. Ayinger makes some wonderful beers.
The beer pours an opaque ochre yellow, with a slight greenish tint. Head is copious and tall, although it dies out about 3/4 of the way through the beer.
Aroma is very wheaty and malty, with plenty of esters, namely clove. Bubblegum and banana are also present, but the clove stands out. Hops are undetectable in the aroma. Lots of phenol.
Flavor is spicy and clovey, with tons of wheat sweetness. Moderate banana and light bubblegum flavor, with a huge phenolic feel when you breathe through your nose. Light spiciness, and a semi-dry finish, with just a tiny dash of hops. Body is fairly full, with all the yeast floating around. Moderate carbonation. An excellent beer! I could probably drink this for the rest of my life if I had to.

drink to the Kaiser

This beer has crept into my pantheon of godbeers. The dunkel weizen is a genre that has been far too underrated. Ayinger's thick, wheaty, banana goodness is taste that I have keep coming back too these last few weeks. It haunts me like the hindenberg.

I declare this the summer of the dunkel weizen!

Tried this one again on 29 Dec. Still in my favorite area- german weissbier. Poured into .5l hefe glass, nice and creamy 3 finger white head that dissapates somewhat, cloudy orange color. Good lacing that follows down the glass. Not heavy on clove or banana- smooth well balanced. Good clean finish. This is another keeper.

Poured from a 1 liter bottle. This beer has a nice one finger head that lingers on for quite some time. The color of this beer is a really nice, slightly reddish amber color. It is not fully opaque, but when held up to the light really nicely shows off its great burnt-auburn haze.

The typical banana nose is here, but it is fairly subdued. More dominant is an almost spiciness, perhaps nutmeg or some other warmth-inspiring ester. It is quite lovely, very complex and inviting.

This thing has some serious mouthfeel! I almost want to chew it. The taste is very yeasty, but in a smooth way. The carbonation gives the end of the taste an almost peppery quality.

Definitely a beer I will be buying again, especially considering the pricepoint. I have not had too many Dunkelweizens, but this is a very good beer.

Don't let the half-hearted lace or the quickly dissipating foam make you think less of this amazing beer. It's a perfect foggy nut brown in color.

With light aromas of citrus, this beer is a full of fruity flavor including citrus, bananas, and pears. It is very well balanced. Don't profane a wheat beer this good by putting a slice of citrus on the glass, for God's sake.

A bit on the gassy side, it is full bodied and tingles with alcohol and a bit of a yeasty bite.

I could drink this all night.

Exciting to finally review something by Ayinger after reading so much about the brewery.... pours a beautiful bright orange-to-brown blend from bottom to top, an almost shadowy hefe... head is thick, pillowy inches that hold nicely in a Schneider Edel-Weisse glass... yeasts are punchy and arresting; something like citrus fruit plays on the nostril with a touch of malt.... smooth, almost laidback presence, with minimal effervescence and the slightest bit of a flourish at the finish--extremely refreshing...surprisingly straightforward in taste: confident wheat couples with a fruity acidity and an underlying malt fortification--a flavor that is both unique and undemanding...begins without fanfare, and I wondered what the awe was about...by midglass, I realized how complete a beer this is, conforming body to mouth, taste to thirst and complexity to the style. A perfect August offering.

Overall, an outstanding beer. Pours as a hazy amber with a good head. Great smell that screams drink me. This one really turned me on to the style which is now one of my favorites. It has a nice fruity taste with a hint of cloves. Very smooth and will continue to be a big player in my beer rotation.

500ml bottle. Best before 12/11.

It pours a darker hefeweizen color, not quite as dark as a typical dunkelweizen, it is a ur-weisse (traditional/pre-modern weisse) after all. It is cloudy with a foamy, creamy-looking off-white head.

The smell is dominated by bananas with just a hint of clove and wheat.

The flavor continues the banana theme. This is just a banana bomb and then some. There is some clove , some apple, and some lemon, yes but the dominant yeast flavor here is banana. There isn’t much in the way of roasted malt in the taste. There is a slight bit of hops that round it out.

This one is delicous x 10, it is a hot day in Munich today and you would be hard-pressed to find a better thirst-quencher. Screw the strawberry-lime-derpaderp, just let the yeast do it’s thing and you’ll get this.

World-class.
