Picked this up at a great beer shop in Darmstadt, Germany, Maruhn Welt der Getränke. Hazy dark copper-amber pour with a creamy two finger white head with good retention and great lacing. The nose is earthy and malty with hints of clove, banana, caramel, wheat, honey, and some subtle citrus. The taste mirrors the nose with lots of earthy, malty, spicy goodness. Hints of clove, banana bread, caramel, orange peel, yeast, apple, white pepper, and wheat. The mouthfeel is thick and chewy but very smooth. A bit on the rich side so probably not a great session beer. Overall, I'm slowly warming up to Weizens and this is definitely a great one!

Nice pomegranate/cranberry color with a nice head. Smells sweet and spicy and cloves. Taste is light and not heavy at all. Very little body which is surprising. Can definitely taste the wheat and reminds me if champagne. Almost like a Belgium lambic. Very nice refreshing beer

Major foam from first pour to last in the tall Peroni lager glass. Thick piles of suds. They call this a dark Weizen but it's a medium amber in color. Sudsy mouthfeel that is the glory of the German brews.

The flavor has a little of the clove taste, but just enough to be addictively spicy. Almost a hint of cinnamon. Fragrant nose as you sip. This is the classic German wheat beer taste, though not overdone. Slightly sweet. Long warm rich taste that ends with some faint bitterness. Well balanced and highly drinkable.

We get used to paying these ridiculous prices for "craft" beers. Here's an excellent classic for four bucks for the 500 ml bottle. Purchased at Bine & Vine in San Diego.

Appearance: pours with a finger of rich head. Dark orange color with a muddy transparensy. Above average active carbonation in glass while drinking.

Smell: full bodied wheat aroma macks the drinker right away. Brighter bodied fruits warm up in the body. Lots of doughy bready yeast round out the aroma well. A solid undertone of exotic spices runs throughout.

Taste: creamy malt hits up front with accents of sweet caramel and molasses with a light to medium depth fruit body. The fruits continue to darken and dance on the palate throughout. High carbonation brings a ton of the lighter accents out. Chewy malt left behind on the palate.

Mouthfeel: big carbonation is king here. Huge bubbly feeling brings the brighter fruits out with lingering yeast body as well.

Overall: much brighter for a dark weizen then I expected. This brew was filled with bubbly fruits and medium bodied breast malt tones. Slow sipper due to the big carbonation factor.

A - Coppery-brown, golden accents. Visually is closer to a weizenbock to than a hefe.

S - Smell is fainter than with the Bräuweisse.

T - From the colour you’d expect it to me maltier, spicier and yeastier but if anything it has less taste than its hefe sibling.

M - Mouthfeel is still pretty good and the carbonation is on the money.

O - It's a well-contructed beer which is found slightly wanting for malt, wheat and spice on the nose and tongue. I'd be really interested to try this fresh on tap. I suspect it might be a whole different ball game.

Popped open a .5L bottle for dessert. This is lighter colored than a dunkel, but more of an amber than your common hefe. Off the bat, it's sort of like Schneider Weisse for the darker bread notes. Overall it does follow more of the notes of a hefeweizen with mild clove, vanilla, and a hint of banana. It's toasty and bready, but also has occasional dark crispy wheat notes. It's smooth and deep, worth trying with and without the yeast dumped in—it's a little brighter before. Man, I'm wishing I didn't only buy one bottle. Get yourself some.

I pour this one carefully, and am rewarded with 2 fingers of off-white head over a caramel colored body. The body is translucent and shows some seriously good looking stuff floating around in it. The head dies to a half finger rather quickly, then retains this for a while. It makes a mild attempt at lacing.

Caramel and grain are the main aromas I get. A little yeast and dark fruit compliment. Further exploration brings out grassy hops.

Grainy with a yeast overture. Caramelized brown sugar adds a really nice sweetness to the mix. Grassy finish with a decent spiced blend on the end.

This brew is medium bodied, and smoooth. It goes down nice and refreshing with no residue left behind.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle into an 8 ounce sampler. A moderate pour causes the head to froth over. The head is frothy and effervescent, with a light tan color. The beer is a pale amber.

Lots of light fruit in the nose and flavor, with just a touch of hop bitterness. Apple/pear, banana and pungent yeast flavors are readily detectable, but not overpowering. A spicy sweet aftertaste lingers, and is accentuated by the burps. A very easy drinking and unique beer.

I paid only about 3.50 for the bottle, which I consider a bargain, based on its overall quality.

No date that I could find.

A: Pours a hazy, almost dirty looking amber. Tall frothy white head. Good head retention but basically zero lacing.

S: Smells like a typical hefe. Loaded with wheat and bananas. A little bit of spiciness too, cloves I assume. Maybe a hint of grass?

T: Heavy on the wheat and light on the grass. Lots of banana and cloves. Pretty much what you'd expect from the aroma.

M: Medium bodied, soft and smooth.

O: Very nice dunkelweizen. Tastes like a slightly heavier and breadier hefe, which I'm guessing is probably exactly what it is. Very easy drinking.

Pours golden to amber in color, cloudy, with lots of foam that goes away quite slowly. A bit chunky.
Smells more like a typical hefeweizen than a dunkel, but with a hint of roast/toastiness.
Strong hefeweizen banana and spice at the start, with some light roast in the back, also some faint caramel. Light acidic fruitiness, with some apple peel, and citrus is mild, not just lemon zest (which is not in the least as annoying as in other weizens), but some sweet oranges too. Wheatiness is a bit more complex than usual, dense and lingering, with nice grains coming through. Yeasts are chunky, quite heavy and spicy; traditional clove, with a whif of cinnamon also. Hoppiness is nice and green, with a mildly bitter finish.
Nice and smooth, goes down slowly, but easily. Beautiful, maybe a bit farther than a "dunkel", but definetely one of the best weizens out there. For me it was better than this brewery's hefeweizen.

Poured from a bottle into a weizen glass.

A - Pours a cloudy dark amber. Moderate pour yields an inch & half of pillowy white foam. Dissipates, leaving a nice ring at the top and a layer of bubbles as well.

S - A lot of banana on the nose, some malt, not much in the way of hops.

T - Similar to the nose - banana, bready malt, a touch honey. I also get a bit of spiceiness on the back end as well.

M - Medium bodied, but still crisp.

O - This is a nice beer - nothing mindblowing, but solid all the way through.

Pours murky and turbid. Light brownish amber with gold hues around the edges and plenty of bubbles streaming up towards the mammoth creamy head of off white foam. That head sits atop this beer like it's gonna last forever. Leaves wet lace, refreshes as it drinks, and never falls off completely. Nice layer on top throughout the drink.

Nose is soft fruits. Light banana and a nice bit of clove. Some tart apple to perk it up and a good bread malt underneath it all. Taste follows the nose all the way. Soft and demure but with a little bit of moxy behind it too. Perky carbonation and a bread that is stronger in the drink than on the nose. Smooth banana and spicy clove combine with the tart apple for a heavenly, creamy drink with just the right amount of tartness. The finish lasts and is dry and has a bit of wheat to really accent all those flavors. Tiny bit peppery at the end but that too is soft and gentle.

The flavors on this one aren't sharp but the drink moves nicely over the palate with a gentle mouthfeel that highlights the tart apple so well. The malt in this just keeps bringing bread to the palate and I really like that. It is medium bodied, tasty and very refreshing.

A good beer! Very smooth and pleasant to drink. I get a lot of bread to the taste with some sort of fruit like an apple. It tastes great but in my opinion I rather have Ayinger's brau weisse. It is a different style of beer but I liked the taste a bit more.

Pours a hazy amber with a huge white head that slowly dissipates to a very thin lace. Aromas are banana and clove, with a hint of butterscotch. Flavors are banana bread, spice, citrus and muted caramel with a bready, citrus finish. Rather high carbonation with a light and peppery mouthfeel. Overall, a very nice wheat beer. Delicious.

Pours a rich, burnt amber color with appreciable cloudiness. A significant white head soon diminishes to a thin cap, which is a little disappointing for a weisse. Only the sparsest lacing clings to the glass as the beer recedes.

Aroma is a pleasing blend of clove, grape, orange zest, and caramel. Carbonation precipitates an intense zing on the front end that almost overwhelms a bready malt with wine-like undertones. Clove and/or a complement of similar such spices are present throughout and persist well into the finish. Even a little alcohol starts to show up in the finish with some warming. The flavors are fairly simple, but bold. Unfortunately, they never quite meld the way I'd hope. The medium body is par for the course.

Overall, this a perky and flavorful weisse that's a little light on the dunkel. The bold, zesty flavors aren't bad, but neither are they refined. Contrary to Ayinger's hefe, this weisse is only decent.

Appearance: Hazy and dark gold (on the lightest end of the dunkelweizen spectrum). The white head is quick to melt down to nothing.

Aroma: Phenols that are equally spicy and sweet/clove-like are immediately noticeable. An unripe fruit aroma with a sulfiric quality suggests infection. May have a bad bottle on my hands.

Taste: Like bananas that have been left out a month too long. Slightly toasted malt is present. Very low bitterness. An overtly sweet caramel taste is distracting, even as a secondary flavor. The malt could be more rich for the style. Altogether, the flavor is rather light, which in this case, may be a good thing!

Mouthfeel: Medium-light, with a watery quality. Moderate carbonation.

Overall: Chock full of rotten sweetness. Still manages to be drinkable, however, probably due to the faintness of aroma and taste. Will have to try this again when I can muster the strength, to see if I had a bad bottle.

A- Hazy copper body. Yellowish off white head foamy retains at one finger.

S- Big banana, a little bit of clove spice. Yeasty.

T- Sweet, some fruit, yeast and wheat. Really full of flavor.

M- Good fizz tingle, smooth and sweet body.

O- Great flavor and aroma. A yummy beer, and definitely a go to weizen. It's techniquely a dunkel, but still light in many aspects.

Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big caramel, toast, toffee, banana, clove, pear, apple, wheat, floral, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of malt and yeast ester notes with a fair amount of hop presence; and good strength. Taste of big caramel, toast, toffee, banana, pear, apple, clove, wheat, honey, pepper, floral, bread, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, banana, pear, apple, clove, wheat, bread, floral, honey, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome balance and complexity of malt and yeast ester flavors; with nice robustness and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a fairly creamy and crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent dunkelweizen style. All around great balance and complexity of malt and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

My first dunkleweizen (having lots of firsts in the Euro styles this week)! Pours a slightly murky dark orange color with creamy light cream colored head. Yeasty almost bretty aroma with some light citrus zest and bitter banana. Flavor is banana, yeast, apple, and pear balanced by a nice effervescent bitter presence. Prickly carbonation in the tongue with medium light mouthfeel overall. I like it.

Thick German bottle pored into a wheat glass. Enjoyed with grilled pork, homemade sauerkraut, & baked beans. Extremely rocky head. Almost fills the entire glass with foam. Smells of cotton candy, spicy pepper, clove, banana. Tastes similarly but with some dark fruit like fig. Medium full. Alcohol in check and seemingly nonexistent. A great compliment to pork & kraut. Could drink this one all night long.

Served in a Devil's Backbone weizen glass.

I remember having good times with the other Ayinger beers I tried back in college, so why not take a chance on another today? This stuff pours a cloudy auburn topped by a couple fingers of off-khaki foam. The nose comprises mild rye bread, clove, banana, a pinch of black pepper, and a twist of orange. The taste brings in more of the same, with the bread tending toward a spicy pumpernickel and taking the van, but the banana, clove, and light orange bringing up a strong rear. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a smooth feel. Overall, a very nice dunkelweizen, one of the better ones readily available around here.

Poured from a bottle into an Erdinger weissbier glass. The pour is a dank, dingy orange with a massive head that doesn't last as long as it should. On the nose I get lots of spicy phenols and fruity esters as well as some tart lemon notes as well.

The beer has a light-medium body and a wonderfully refreshing flavor. No real hop character found. It is sweet and bready up front, like fresh toast with honey. Then, it gets slightly fruity towards the back of the palate as flavors of lemon, tea, and peppery clove flavors come in. There is a faint tartness on the finish. All this is supported by a nice level of carbonation. Even though the bloom dies off prematurely, the beer doesn't feel dead on the palate.

Overall, a delicious beer with a flavor nicely balanced between fruity, bready, and tart. I think it's a really great example of a dark weizen. It's hard to find flaws with the true German examples of this style. They're just so tasty, refreshing, and easy to drink I honestly don't know why I even bother reviewing them.

Dring the pour i couldn't help noticing how massively carbd this beer is.
A handsome looking brew with a hazy amber body and a surprizing small beige white head.
The aroma is more along the lines of barley malts and not the wheat we expext in a good weisse. Some evidence of yeasty ester giving a sutle smell.
I must agree with others in that this is balanced more towards barley malts. Wheat malts that characterize most weisse is quite lean. I also say that this baby is quite sweet. A tart sweetness. Cloves weave in and out of the sweetness.
Drinks soft and sweet despite all the carbonation.
A good beer I much enjoyed.
