500 ml bottle into weizen glass, no bottle dating. Pours hazy deep orange copper color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big caramel, toast, toffee, banana, clove, pear, apple, wheat, floral, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of malt and yeast ester notes with a fair amount of hop presence; and good strength. Taste of big caramel, toast, toffee, banana, pear, apple, clove, wheat, honey, pepper, floral, bread, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, banana, pear, apple, clove, wheat, bread, floral, honey, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome balance and complexity of malt and yeast ester flavors; with nice robustness and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a fairly creamy and crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent dunkelweizen style. All around great balance and complexity of malt and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A: Pours a cloudy copper color with a two finger thick creamy off-white head. The head reduces by about 25% but has great retention. There is significant lacing observed.

S: Lots of banana + clove in the nose of this beer with some much lighter hints of wheat and sweet malts.

T: This beer starts out a little sweet with some caramel notes to the malts and wheat, followed by the flavors of banana + clove, and finishes with a hint of toastiness and bitterness. Very nice complexity and balance to the flavors.

M: Medium bodied with moderate to high amounts of carbonation. Slightly prickly on the tongue like a champagne.

O: Very easy to drink and very refreshing, definitely a session beer that makes me want to sit outside on the beautiful spring day that it is today and have several of these - though it would be much better in a beer garden in Bavaria. (862 characters)

The beer pours a hazy golden color with a thick frothy offwhite head that quickly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a sweet wheat malt scent with some crystal malts. It is full of fruitiness and clove aromas; very nice. The taste is good. It has a dry, yet extremely fruity wheat malt flavor with a yeasty finish. It goes down easy and has a smooth malty aftertaste. The mouthfeel is decent. It is a medium/full bodied beer with a little too much carbonation. This is a real burp producer. This is a fine Dunkel Weizen. It has excellent aroma and taste, but the mouthfeel tanks. This is a good drinker despite being overcarbonated. (640 characters)

500 mL into Weissen glass

Color was a hazy straw brown. Light tan head. Left medium level of lacing.

Aroma was of clove and bananas (similar to a hefewissen). Taste was similar. Roasted fruits and nuts were present also.

Mouthfeel is smooth at first and then goes down creamy. It has a sticky aftertaste.

Overall, I really enjoyed this beer. $4 for a half liter is kinda steep, but I think it was worth it. (412 characters)

Pours an orangish-amber color with a large white head. Aroma is predominantly apples, with a little malt in there as well. The taste is heavy on the bananas, but you also get some apple. No real hops or malt are present in the aroma. A very flavorful beer that is heavy on the fruit. Good beer. (294 characters)

Having had this directly after Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel, the former was much better in my opinion. I did not find the Ayinger to have the balanced dark wheat presence like the Weinhenstephaner did. (209 characters)

04/06/09- Purchased at Bevmo in San Mateo, CA.

Presentation- 16.9oz bottle poured into my Ayinger weizen glass. Freshness dating on the back label.

Appearance- Not as dark as the last dunkelweizen I had. Pours a light Kraft caramel color. Basically a dirty colored hefe. Lots of microscopic yeast. Full one ince plus foamy head and some spotty and light patchy lace.

Smell- Good nose of banana, bubble gum, clove and vanilla. Maybe a bit of roasted sweet malt as well.

Taste- Very flavorful with a full banana and clove backgroud. Very fresh yeast flavor. Bubble gum flavors as well. Almost has a tropical fruit flavor as well as a hint of vanilla and honey.

Mouthfeel- About the perfect carbonation level. Even a slight creamy in texture. Crisp as well.

Drinkability- Probably my favorite Dunkel to date. Quite flavorful. (828 characters)

A standard pour produces an easily four-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a full amber color and shows a deeply hazy, pinkish, light amber color when held up to the light. The aroma is quite fruity with notes of ripe plums, apples and juicy-fruit gum all quite noticeable. Spice notes of clove and banana traditionally found in the style are also evident. Dusty grain aromatics, some tart wheat character and a freshly crushed malt character in the finish add the malt component of this beer's nose. As the beer warms a bit the fresh, vibrant fruitiness begins to pick up a slightly green, under-ripe edge.

Lightly sweet tasting up front and through the middle, though the flavor does dry out some towards the finish. This is a light, easy drinking beer for the most part, but it has a touch of creamy heft (despite an zesty carbonation) and fullness to it. The carbonation seems to help keep this beer seeming light and quaffable. Lightly tart notes characteristic of wheat accents flavors of sour / sweet plums, light apple flavors and a touch of tamarind. A bit of dusty grain towards the end as well as some light grassy grain and at times a stale cracker flavor in the finish. The more traditional Hefe-flavors of clove and banana are here, but seem to play a supporting role; that is not to say this does not taste quite traditional as even the other flavors that are here are perfectly in line with the style.

Refreshingly tart, yet with a fullness that makes it seem perfectly appropriate for a warm, Tucson winter's afternoon. A tasty beer that is perhaps a touch flawed, but still quite good.

A: Pours a rather light brown, with a medium white head, average head retention for style.

S: Baked bread, light clove, banana.

T: Lots of banana bread, cola, sweet but light molasses and brown sugar roll across the tongue as well. On the sweeter end of the style, no real clove bitterness to speak of.

M: High in carbonation at first, but it certainly dies down after a while. Very smooth, light-bodied and easy to drink.

D: This is an outstanding dark country wheat beer, one of the best flavours out there in this style. Ayinger continues to make outstanding stuff. (588 characters)

500 Mll bottle, no freshness dating, I dont think the German's are too interested in this type of helpful consumer friendly info. Pours a muddy shade of medium brown, with a slight oily glaze. The head is huge, retentive, soft, frothy and fluffy. Leaves moderate daggers of lace. Nose is chock full of bananas, yeast and dunkel weisse goodness. Tasty offering, has that nice mix of fruityness, yeastyness and dark bready wheat notes that make this a favorite style. Nice brew from Ayinger. (489 characters)

An amber pour, not as "dunkel" as I imagined, but no worries. Hazy body holds up and produces a fat, semi-sticky white head. Some rockiness in the foam, sticks to the sides a bit.
Corriander and slight citrus blend and over power the malt in the aroma. slight pear and apple hints.
Taste is light and crisp. Some malt gives it a bit of sweetness and calms down the citrus. Leaves a bit of a stickiness in the mouth, even though it's light. Not sure if I like that, isn't quite as quenching as other Weizens. Aftertaste is slight and rather clean. (548 characters)

Poured from the bottle into a wheat ale style glass.

Super large typical styrofoamy head, kind of like a meringue top nice and white hints at cream and egg sheen. Body color is a classic amber and cloudy murky yellow. Lots of rising carbonation.

Nose is sweet clove, toasted malts and grain. A little bit of orange in there. A bit of ripping dry husk action. Real nice lovely nose.

Chewy palate mixes with just the right amount of playful carbonation. Lingering finish. Palate is rich in malts and dark spices with some dry action. A chewy feel, with clove like aromatics, very much so on the finish. Borderline creamy texture but the carbonation cuts through that just slightly.

Overall, a great example of the style and tasty. More Ayinger win. (750 characters)

Is music and beer the new fad? I have my tunes set on Depeche Mode as I'm ready to open this bottle. On to the beer:

Oh my, that smells good. Whoa, slow down....okay. Lots of bubbly head on top this carmel brown beer. Decent head retention. The nose...apples, major spicy phenols. Not as intense or aromic as it was when I opened it, but still good.

Spicer than the usual dunkleweiss, and I like meself a spicy wiessbier. Caramel dipped apples merge with a pinch of ground clove. Hints cinnamon too. Light brush-up of alcohol towards the back. Wheat dries the palate, and keeps it dry in the aftertaste.

Very good halfway in, but the second half was merely good. I'll go with the latter on this one to determine it overall. (728 characters)

Popped open a .5L bottle for dessert. This is lighter colored than a dunkel, but more of an amber than your common hefe. Off the bat, it's sort of like Schneider Weisse for the darker bread notes. Overall it does follow more of the notes of a hefeweizen with mild clove, vanilla, and a hint of banana. It's toasty and bready, but also has occasional dark crispy wheat notes. It's smooth and deep, worth trying with and without the yeast dumped in—it's a little brighter before. Man, I'm wishing I didn't only buy one bottle. Get yourself some. (545 characters)

500ml bottle purchased from BevMo in Menlo Park, CA.

Pours a muddied orange-amber colour, heavily hazed, with a solid froth of white foam. Body is very fluid, and seems light, but the haze, and the fine carbonation gives it a distinctive weight. Lacing is weak, but forms in patches. Overall, it looks pretty decent.

Nose is a little earthier and spicier than I expected. There's no big banana characters, and no classic clove: instead there's a very organic character, like freshly turned mulch, mingled with a peppery spice and some other estery characters: I get vanilla and starfruit. And yet, it manages still to feel like a German ale for some reason. It's confusing.

Taste is pleasant. Smooth, clear wheat characters give a crisp centre of the palate surrounded by sweet softness all around. Some peppery, earthy and leathery notes come out later, and even some of those banana phenols missing on the palate seem to appear towards the finish. It's quite pleasant.

Feel is smooth and light. Not bad at all.

Overall, this is different, but very pleasant. It's perhaps somewhere between a hefe and a dunkel, and yet also manages to hold very different characters from many of the examples I've had in the past. I was very interested in it as a result. (1,260 characters)

Pours a cloudy light brown brew.

Smell is the banana, spice and cloves of a good German wheat beer. Mild perfume is also in the smell.

Taste is sweet and fruity with a solid wheat base character. Banana and bubble gum flavors. The big grain flavor of this helps clean the palette. No bitterness at all.

Big Mouthfeel, solid wheat thickness and bitey carbonation.

Very drinkable brew would go great with a spicy sandwich. (432 characters)

A- This beer has a warm brown body with a strong wave of tiny bubbles and a thick mousy head that last and last. The head is even sitting in the bottom of the glass after the beer is finished.

S- The smell of wheat and yeast has a mellow banana and fresh ripe pears even from the pour. The notes of green hops come through in the finish and they are pretty subtle.

T- The smooth soft wheat flavor has a slight toasted wheat note and some dark bread crust flavors. There is some nice banana and pear flavors that blend into the light green hops at the finish.

M- The medium-full mouthfeel has a nice fizz in the finish that fills out the mouthfeel and cleans the finish.

D- This beer has a big aroma with a softer flavor but they both have some good complexity. This beer is a meal in a glass and is very filling. With a flood of bland wheat beers on the market I forgot how great wheat beers can really taste. (945 characters)

This is a 500 mL bottle served in a Widmer Bros. weizen glass. The ale is slightly chilled.

Appearance: The ale is a burnt orange color, just a few shades darker than your run of the mill weizen. There is a ring of head around the glass, but no lace.

Smell: The ale has a bit of a estery aroma, giving off hints of banana. The only drawback is that that aroma is faint at times.

Taste: The ale tastes good, starting a little poorly but finishing nicely. There are estery flavors, somewhat light, that give a bit of a clove flavor. The darker malts add just a bit of flavor but not so much that it overpowers.

Mouthfeel: The ale tastes very good, with the light wheat body carrying the day.

Drinkability: The drinkability is high, as the weizen flavors seemlessly meld with the darker malts. (805 characters)

This is my first dunkel weizen. Poured into a Ayinger glass, hazy yellowish/brown color with a huge head and carbonation. I was figuring a dark color, but I guess not. Lacing is very present with a medium feel. I really like the taste for a dunkel. I could drink a few of these, for a dunkel weizen, it's very drinkable. (320 characters)

Pours golden to amber in color, cloudy, with lots of foam that goes away quite slowly. A bit chunky.
Smells more like a typical hefeweizen than a dunkel, but with a hint of roast/toastiness.
Strong hefeweizen banana and spice at the start, with some light roast in the back, also some faint caramel. Light acidic fruitiness, with some apple peel, and citrus is mild, not just lemon zest (which is not in the least as annoying as in other weizens), but some sweet oranges too. Wheatiness is a bit more complex than usual, dense and lingering, with nice grains coming through. Yeasts are chunky, quite heavy and spicy; traditional clove, with a whif of cinnamon also. Hoppiness is nice and green, with a mildly bitter finish.
Nice and smooth, goes down slowly, but easily. Beautiful, maybe a bit farther than a "dunkel", but definetely one of the best weizens out there. For me it was better than this brewery's hefeweizen. (921 characters)

17oz bottle from the Coop for about $2.75.. poured into my New Belgium goblet.

2" head drops leaving little lacing atop a slightly hazy light amber brews.

Aroma is spicy with big notes of molasses... banana and clove... light bubblegum.

Flavor is the same as the aroma but with a long spicy banana finish.. nowhere near as sweet as the nose lets on... there are brown sugar notes... reminds me of bananas foster and pumpkin pie. Suprising light body.. but still higher than most traditional pale hefe's.

Good beer that I've only had one other time... tasty and very drinkable. (580 characters)
