Poured from a 500 mL bottle into tulip-shaped Duvel glass.
A: Pours a light copper-orange, filled with carbonation, and a mighty three-finger head. Bubbles and head quiet down after a minute or so; looks to be enjoyable.
S: Sweet, fruity malts. Sort of like fermented apple juice or a hard cider. There's a note of raisin mixed with a mild alcohol scent.
T: Tastes like a sparkling cider up front as well. This would worry me, but the taste evens out with a nice, sweet malt and a slight bitter hop kick in the end.
M: Mouthfeel is crisp and astringent. Doesn't cling to the palate, and makes a smooth transition, although it finishes a bit harsh sometimes.
D: It's tasty and mellow for a marzen. I wouldn't keep a fridge full, or open more than a couple bottles to share with friends, but I'd certainly recommend it and continue to enjoy it myself this season.
Overall, it's a pretty nice Oktoberfest. A little too thin at times I looked for more complexity, but the fruitiness is a pleasant surprise. I wish I had one of those trees pictured on the cap that has Ayinger bottles growing all over it, that's for true.
