on tap at braun way up in arvada. very light yellow and very cloudy from the tap, although no pieces are visible in the beer at all. tall white head rises up to almost two inches and never relaxes. the nose here is great, the familiar banana and clove complex, but its subtle, not over the top, and lets the fantastic and classic german wheat malt shine above the yeast, or at least in concert with it. i like it because its quicker finishing, and because the body is not quite so full as others, so as to make this a much more drinkable example of the style. i was absolutely in love with the dark version of this, and while the regular weiss version is just a little less in my wheelhouse, i think the quality here is evident. a really tasty and refreshing summer afternoon pint. nice to see some real authentic german stuff still getting tap handles in our very crowded denver beer market!

Next on my agenda is getting as far away from Brazilian Lagers as possible after my single brief flirtation with their brewing industry (Palma Louca). All I can say to Brazil is: Stick with soccer, carnivals, and F1 drivers - i.e. what you're best at. Let's move on to König Ludwig Weiss (aka 'The Royal Bavarian Hefe-Weizen'). Royal Bavarian what? Well apparently, according to the Warsteiner (aka 'The Queen of Beers') website: HRH Luitpold*, Prince of Bavaria, pays personal attention to the high quality of this beer and the exclusive resources from southern Germany. There's a lot of royalty going on with this beer.

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a Weizen glass.

A: Presents a hazy, not quite naturtrüb, golden body with a creamy 1 inch head that settles to a centimetre in the time it takes for me to confuse my readers with my mixing of imperial and metric measurements.

S: Over-ripe bananas mingle with hints of clove and a broad musty yeast. There's a touch of other spices going on like cardamom and nutmeg, but by the by this is an average Weizen aroma and I'm not expecting it to topple the mighty Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier.

T: Flavour is a bit more interesting than expected with the above mentioned over-ripe bananas having a toffee dimension as well. The however yeast is as flat and musty as expected and the hints of clove, cardamom and nutmeg all make an appearance. Another sip reveals that the toffee is more of a buttery Diacetyl (well toffee and butter are similar flavours). The finish is dry more than bitter.

M: Medium bodied with a creamy dense carbonation, right on the money here.

D: Overall I quite like this Weizen for the big Diacetyl, however two things struck me about it - the high price and the fact that it didn't come in a 500ml bottle, two things where the Weihenstephaner beats this... but the flavour is close to being as good as Weihenstephaner and I do enjoy an intentionally buttery Weizen, which this is... Dammit Prince Luitpold, make your beers cheaper and you might actually be able to compete with Weihenstephan!

Food match: Grilled pork back-strap with charred potatoes, caramelised onion and
bacon-wrapped asparagus.

*That might be because he owns König Ludwig GmbH & Co. KG Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg, the brewery, duh Dok!

Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a hazy light golden amber with a huge three finger white head with good retention and lots of lacing. Classic hefe aroma of sweet wheat and yeast, light clove and banana. Flavor follows, with modestly sweet wheat, light apple juice, hints of clove, caramel and banana. Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A nice, mellow and very well balanced hefeweizen, hitting all the right notes without any component dominating. Perhaps a bit lighter in flavor than some hefes, but pleasant and refreshing. A nice example of a great style.
