Notes/Commercial Description:
Cameron’s Cream Ale is the beer that started our company. Hailed by Toronto Life in 1998 as “best new beer of the year.” This elegant golden ale is crisp, refreshing and balanced with a fruity backbone. Brewed with 2 row malted barley and specialty hops from the UK. Cameron’s Cream Ale is a dimensional beer that is refreshing in the summer and comforting in the colder seasons.

A: Golden copper, clear filtered, little slow rising carbonation, 3 fingers of off white head, nice lacing, fades moderately fast.

S: Lager yeasts, dried hay, slight fruitiness, slight hot banana pepper spice, snow.

T: Lager like, light dried hay, cereal as in Shreddies, little dull bitterness on the end, lightly hopped, very light sweetness. Corn.

M: Medium bready body, medium low carbonation.

O: Ok. Smooth, light, lager like, not wowing me. Got it in a Cameron’s mixed pack.

I love the concept of the taster packs sold by Canadian craft brewers. We get to sample several of the brewery's beers without having to hunt up individual cans or bottles. So accordingly, I just picked up a Taster 4 Pack from Cameron's Brewing Company. It contains their Cream Ale, Auburn Ale, Lager and Dark 266. The 'packaged on' date stamped on the box read Jun 29 2011.

Cameron's Brewing Company is a craft brewery located in Oakville, Ontario. Founded in 1997, it produces the four beers referred to above, which are only sold in the province of Ontario. Apparently the Dark 266 is only available in the Toronto area in limited distribution. Cameron's is known for selling its beer in 9 packs as opposed to the conventional 6 pack, and for its use of all natural ingredients.

I decided to start with Cameron's Cream Ale ("CCA"), their flagship brand, which is 5.0% alcohol by volume and came in a 341 ml bottle. CCA poured a clear golden yellow colour, and took on a beautiful golden hue when held up to the light. Pouring produced a very thin, fizzy white head which disappeared inside two minutes, leaving a collar which produced some minimal lacing down the glass. The aroma was subdued but interesting...sweet malts, apple and a bit of hops. Carbonation level was moderate and the beer was medium bodied with a bit of a creamy feel to it. The taste began with the sweet malts and transitioned to a slightly bitter, apple flavoured finish. The bitter/apple aftertaste didn't linger too long. A decent beer overall, but if I was in the mood for a cream ale this offering just isn't in the same league as say Muskoka's Cream Ale.

According to the company's web site, CCA was a gold medal winner at the Canadian Brewing Awards.

This beer poors well, carbonated well, provides enough head, tastes well, drinks well, but that's about it. It's a good beer, but nothing special and falls into the good/ok category.

I am hoping to try the beer again as I may of had an off batch. Cameron's has award winning beers.

Served cold into a Keith's pint glass. Picked this up as part of the Cameron's taster's pack.

Appearance - Nice dark golden color, very clear, but virtually no head at all is poured, and what is poured dissipates almost immediately. The color looks good, just wish there was more head here. Some good lacing left around the glass however.

Smell - Faint sweetness of caramel and maybe a trace of vanilla, that I find in many cream ales. Also general beer graininess dominates the aroma. Not a lot else, but the nose comes through boldly and smells inviting.

taste - More of the roasted grains, transitioning to a bitter conclusion from the hops. The vanilla and caramel sweetness on the nose doesn't show up in the flavor profile.

Mouthfeel - Lowish carbonation gives a slightly flat feel, yet at the same time there is a fizziness that is briefly present when it first hits your tongue. Dry finish lingers in the mouth a while too.

Overall - A bit better than I had remembered it, but definitely nothing outstanding. Holds its own with some of Ontario's other brewers in the style, but not anything I would rush out again. The main purpose behind trying the pack was to get a small taste of the rye Pale Ale and the Deviator Doppelbock anyway, but this will help quaff my thirst for the afternoon.
