12oz bottle in Duvel tulip
date: 100412/100417
A: Deep copper color with a hint of red, almost no head and very little lace.
S: Some caramel, some fruit (raisins?), a weirdness that makes me think metal? Not unpleasant, just weird.
T: Lots of caramel and dark sugar, seems to be some basic brown sugar as well, a definite sweetness. Definite hints of raisins along with some dark stone fruit (plums/prunes?). Absolutely no sign of alcohol which sort of scares me, is this really 11%?
M: Creamy mouthfeel, but the carbonation could be dialed down a little. Very rich without being cloying.
O: So, I don't know if the recipe has changed since I last had this, but this seems to be a completely different beer. This is an very good example of an English Barleywine. Shockingly easy to drink with lots going on. For someone who likes big beers but thinks barleywines are too hoppy, this would be a good starting point for further exploration. Very recommended. Thanks Doug for xmas.

12oz bottle in Duvel tulip
no date, but it is the last of a six pack purchased last Dec, so at least a year old.

A: Pours a hazy dark brown with some yeast chunks (I wish there was an indication of bottle conditioning). No head, no lace, but not a surprise given the alcohol level. When held up to a bright light, it looks like dark caramel or toffee.
S: Sweet caramel combined with english yeast fruitiness
T: Lots of caramel sweetness, a little bit of buttery toffee, some dark fruits that I assume are grain related and some definite yeast derived fruitiness. There is a slight metallic taste, not unpleasant, but a little odd, kind of like a weird aftertaste.
M: A little too much carbonation, other than that, a nice mouthfeel, rich without being cloying. The carbonation gets a lot better after it has been open for 1/2 hour.
D: An ok example of the style, but not great. There is something to think about, but it is not very complex. Probably worth trying if you like the style, but I won't purchase again.

A - cranberry, plum colored, almost a red/plum wine

S - alcohol, plums, figs, dates, honey

T - very sweet, can taste the alcohol but not overwhelming, fruits are darker ones - plums and figs, maybe some berries

M - sweet, sharp from the alcohol, medium bodied, barely any carbonation

O - Very sweet, the dark fruits are nice, taste of plum and the figs/dates are rather different, but its almost too sweet at times. A sipper.
