32 oz. growler poured into a Weyerbacher tulip. Growler was filled yesterday at Whole Foods Glen Mills.
A - Pours a ruby-auburn hue with a half finger of bone colored head. Although it doesn't start very big, the head holds steady at a half finger for a long time. Great lacing.
S - Some spicy belgian phenols accompanied by a host of fruit aromas. Cherry, grape, banana, and pear all come to mind. Brown sugar and booze on the back end. Very good aroma.
T - A blast of sweetness on the start. Candied figs, banana, and molasses. Clove spices follow along with shoo-fly-pie malts. The alcohol is very subtle, especially for a nearly 12% beer. A very subdued apple tartness comes through on the finish. The aftertaste is of maraschino cherries. Pretty well done in a style I usually find cloyingly sweet.
M - Rich and a bit syrupy with mellow carbonation. It is definitely a sipper.
O - This was an enjoyable Quad, something I haven't found by many US breweries. Admittedly, this is not one of my favorite styles. The fruit flavors are complex and pull up just short of cloying. The alcohol is well hidden for a beer this big. Weyerbacher is a personal favorite brewery of mine, so perhaps I am biased, but I thought this was a very well done quad.
