Presentation: 12 oz. bottle poured into a trappist glass.
Appearance: Dark gold with a copper hue. Head fades quickly due to high alcohol.
Smell: Upfront fusal alcohol notes. Malts combine with a sweet fruit character (cherries & plums). Some chocolates present. The yeast provides a rather musty character.
Taste: Full-bodied with light carbonation. Upfront alcohols assault the palate. Sweet malts combine with a cherry-chocolate flavor, with perhaps some plums, clove, and some other spices in the background.
Overall: An excellent example of its style. I wouldn't drink any more than one or two of these in one sitting, though, as this brew clocks in at a staggering 12.2% ABV. The complexities and smoothness in the beer stand out a lot more when consumed at or near room temperature. This beer also ages very well and mellows out nicely over time, so cellar a bottle or two for future enjoyment.
This beer pairs up nicely with port wine cheese.
