Deep reddish amber that almost looks a bit purple tinted. Smelled sweet and candy-like with hints of fruit, toasted grains, and, of course, alcohol. Spiciness from hops mixes well with vodka-like alcohol flavor and provides some balance to this beer. Relatively simple beer when compared to others that back a big punch like Quad does. The beer wasn't overdone with burnt grains and 50,000 IBUs, which it shouldn't be as a Belgian Dark Strong Ale. It is this simplicity that makes it stand out. Sweet brew that leaves the mouth coated with a wonderful, slick glaze and the lips sticky as hell. I do wish that the beer has more going on in the aroma department, though
I would love to try this after 6 months or a year in a cellar.
Well, I did let a few of these spend a year untouched. What a great thing to do. Dusty cherries emerged in the nose and a lot of the sweetness went away to reveal white pepper during the finish. The mouthfeel became creamier. Good stuff.
