A decent bourbon after taste but overall a mediocre brew

Disclaimer: The wife (who loves stouts, but not necessarily BA stouts) loved this brew and literally fought me for my half of the bottle. Luckily, I am bigger than her. Opaque nightmare of darkness with a thin ring of tan bubbles. Nose had all of the expected bourbon and oak notes, however, the roasted malt character was not lost amid the hints of vanilla, oak, and whiskey warmth. Perfect balance and blend of stout and barrel translates over to the palate as well. Alcohol warmth is present, however it is not hot or overpowering. Hint thin on the mouthfeel (maybe in relation to the flavors), but keep in mind that is an 8% stout, and not some kind of monster. This came together really well, and if you have tried Old Heathen (which we had a few weeks ago), it doesn't get eaten up by the barrel. Great balance in an affordable bottle.

Appearance - Pours dark cola brown with a cocoa powder colored near finger width head. Good retention before settling to a fine layer of velvety suds across the surface. Lacing is streaky and spotty with nice stick.

Smell - Sweet notes of chocolate, molasses, toffee and light vanilla meet with a dark, boozy rum raisin undertone.

Taste - More toffee on the flavor with lesser chocolate upfront. Mild oak creeps in mid-taste, followed by a touch of coffee roast. The finish is dark, with raisin and boozy heat making their mark in the back end.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full body with low carbonation. Drying, boozy finish.

Overall - A really good, approachable BA Russian Imperial. A bit boozy considering the 8% ABV, but nothing too hot to handle. Recommended for anyone new to BA beers. Veterans may find a bit of charm in it, too.

Deep clear almost-obsidian, just with some warmer touches. Good sized velvety brown head that lasts quite some time

Nose starts kind of thin with sweet figs and char. Not much more.

Sweet dark fruits dominate and then an alcohol wallop that tickles the throat long after it's been swallowed. Sweet dark fruits and alcohol. I get no barrel outside of the alcohol itself. Maybe a faint hint of oak part way through but not much.
Not bad per se if it were just a basic overly boozy stout (but still not GREAT [I'm not as big on the fruitier stouts like Anchor, preferring more roasty/char/etc. But thats just me]), but looking for a BA it leaves much to be desired.

I think this is my favorite for the money. The color (dark, but warm) and the smell (sweet & carmel-rich) set the tone for the taste. If old english toffee covered in chocolate were a beer, I think this would be it.

surprisingly very good considering the price,Which was cheap at 12 bucks a 4 pack. Not quite to the standard of their sunday morning stout, but that isnt really a criticism. tasty stout with the definite taste of whiskey barrels which gives this beer a surprising tart fruit finish.excellent.

I agree with the last reviewer. Sure it's not kbs or some of the other big dogs, buts it's not far off those, and at roughly half the price of other bb stouts it's worth it. And I don't have to get on a waiting list or try to hunt down one bottle. It's readily avaiable on shelves at any decent beer place here in michigan

I cannot believe this is rated under 4 on here. Sure it's not a huge barrel presence but very solid and for $3 a bottle you can't beat the price/quality ratio.

Had high hopes for this one out of the gate: Very rich, dark pour; Great head + some nice initial sweetness and roasted malt flavors, that initially had me thinking I'd found a winner, at least in terms of my personal rotation. As it warmed however, the bourbon notes began to creep further and further forward to the point that it began to dominate too much for my taste. Not sure if cellaring would help to subdue that or push it further into the foreground, but at this point, just to much booze and bourbon for me.

Had a snifter at the Capital Ale House in Richmond earlier today for $7.00.

Beer was served black with nice tan head.

Nose had light hints of bourbon barrel.

Taste had hints of sweet chocolate and roasted malts with a hint of bourbon barrel.

Mouthfeel was medium bodied and fairly smooth.

I am not sure what the base beer was but typically RIS style beers are barrel aged and not export stout styles. But perhaps Weyerbacher is trying to be a trend setter and subject less than imperial styles to barrel aging. Not bad but would not do again for the price point.

Something tart / fruity going on in the aroma, and starting to show a bit in the taste. I won't plan on saving any of these.
Decent, lighter barrel stout, but not a lot of barrel showing through. Plan to polish these off, but won't get more

This one was 'okay', but didn't live up to the KBS and BCBS that were also tasted in the same evening. Heresy smelled good, but seemed very thin and lacked a big taste. On it's own, it's still worth seeking if you like a 'lighter' BA beer.

Pours an oily black with a tan/brown colored head than looks nice for about a minute before it dissipates into obscurity.

Smells rich of bourbon. More so than other barrel aged imperial stouts I can remember. It also has a hard-water, rust/blood-like/metallic note, with some roasted malt characters.

The flavor profile has notes of chocolate and red merlot. The taste, in my opinion, doesn't seem that impressive. Somewhat fruity in its aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied. I was expecting something somewhat bigger from this. It isn't bad, or necessarily lacking here, but also not bold enough in it's feel to say much about.

Black with light brown head; thick lace as liquid reduces. Smells like whiskey and wood. Whiskey and toffee stout flavors. Medium mouthfeel. Very good - would definitely drink again.

Pours slick and oily tar black with a thick finger and a half of light brown foam that dissipates rapidly.

Dark chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruits, oak, and a hint of bourbon.

Chocolate and roasted notes stand out the most, but seem much more subtle in comparison to the aroma. Oak, some light vanilla, and bourbon is also present, but again seems toned down.

Heavy-bodied, light-medium carbonation, semi-chewy, roasty, bitter.

Overall, this is definitely not the greatest BBA impy stout I've had, but for $12 a 4 pack, it's worth a shot.

Poured out of a 12 ounce bottle. Maybe this batch went bad because it was sour (not in the good way) and not drinkable.

Pours black like oil with similar viscosity and a nice amount of khaki colored head. Whiskey and cocoa on the nose, a little roasted malt too; follows onto the palate. Finishes with vanilla and cocoa, with a whiskey backbone.

Poured very dark, almost black, opaque. Nice half-inch head. Aroma has touches of chocolate, vanilla and just a hint coffee and alcohol. Flavor was lots of dark roast malt, vanilla, and some dark fruit. Mouthfeel was somewhat thin from what I had expected from an Imperial Stout. Overall, pretty tasty, but not outstanding. Very drinkable.

Pours a deep inky black with a thick-ish light tan head. The head has limited retention and leaves very slight sticky lacing. The aroma is bourbon forward, with hints of vanillin and roasted malt. The taste is on the lighter side, but still has all the characteristics of the aroma, nicely melded together. The body is lighter, as well, with a nice slickness and a little alcohol tingle.
