12 ounce bottle no bottled on or best by date.
Hard to say the age of this beer, I suspect it was 2010 release of the beer but can't be certain.
Appearance on the pour is light amber as it gathers in the glass it is a slightly hazy copper to orange hued amber color with a faint cream colored white foam head which breaks rather quickly. Some signs of lacing as it drinks.
Aromas are maple, oak, touch of vanilla bean hard to pick up any boozy bourbon character which is actually a plus in general in my book, I enjoy that note when balanced with the beer, often it is not though, in this case the barrel context is very subdued. Some earthiness, moss, slate and charcoal notes.
Taste is very polished for a bourbon barrel aged beer. Big oak tones interplay with the caramel malt profile, vanilla and brown sugar, bitterness appears upfront but subsides in the finish which has a deep warming character to it. Nothing terribly hot and certainly not fusel but it lets you know that the beer is strong.
Medium to just shy of full bodied, wood tannins compliment the sweetness of the beer, finish is sweet balanced by warming alcohol.
For a bourbon barrel aged barleywine this beer is very approachable and drinkable, the aroma and flavors are not over saturated and most importantly do not sting of bourbon.
