I really need to learn hop varieties better, but here we go with another single hop beer.
Pours rather dark, we're not far from a black IPA. Held to the light this is a cloud dark orange and just lovely IPA. Head could be better and retention could be better as well.
Pungent floral, citrus, resiny, and just glorious hops in this nose. A solid malt sweetness here, this is going to have some malt back bones for sure.
This is amazingly complex, clearly the simcoe hop variety has a lot going on. A very resiny, nutty, and has some of the weed like funk notes (at least it tastes like weed smells, can't really comment on the flavors). Malt seems to perfectly intertwine with the nutty notes from the hops. The shift from hoppy to sweet here works flawlessly and the malt completely complements the hops. Word to brewers, the malt is supposed to do this. Hoppy and sweet only works when they go together.
There is plenty of carbonation here which gives this medium-thick bodied beer a rather drinkable mouth feel.
This is incredibly flavorful beer. It is overpowering and perhaps everything an American IPA should be. In your face hop forward and rude as hell about it! I'm a fan and wish this were available in my area.

Bought an assortment case in Northeastern PA. Have had the Old Heathen and a couple other brews from Weyerbacher before, but their example of an Imperial IPA is incredible. The malt balances with the Hops to create one of the more drinkable IPA's I've had (particularly considering it's a daunting 9% ABV). Not overwhelmingly carbonated, a great choice for a summer beer!
