A surprisingly dark and expectionally smooth tasting double IPA. Despite the darker amber/caramel color Double Simcoe is not very roasty tasting, has more of sweet caramel taste with the hops adding more of a balance to it then a bitterness. Very drinkable, not a very hop forward double. If you are looking for a smooth, malty sweet IPA with good balance this is a good beer. Not mouth numbing in bitterness at all.

Poured from a bottle to a snifter.

Pours a magnificent orangeish-amber. Creamy foam head with decent retention. Not much lacing. A little murky.

Aroma is a strong balance of citrus, pine, and malts. Heavy on the grapefruit, and a little bit of orange.

Orange, grapefruit, and bitterness hit me first. A good deal of grassiness. Pine and caramel notes. A little less hoppy than I had imagined. Alcohol is masked incredibly well for 9%.

Medium-bodied, not too much carbonation. A little syrupy.

Overall, one of the more underwhelming DIPAs I've had. Not bad, at all, but definitely wouldn't be my first recommendation.

Bottled 11/22/13, Best By 5/22/13. so we're a month past its BBD. Bought Sunday in a mixed six. Really have to be suree to bring a magnifier with me when I buy beer, to check freshness dates, especially at places which specialize in selling singles in mixed sixes and the singles are shelved on their own.

Served at 48 degrees. Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Tree House tulip pint.

a: Hazy copper with a finger thick offwhite head which recedwed to thin patchy surface foam and equally patchy lacing.

s: Mild caramel malt.

t: Fruit-tinged hop bite over a medium malt base. Bitterness lingers on the tongue. High ABV is well covered. Mellows as it warms.

m: Medium with good body and plenty of carbonation tingle.

o; Perhaps it's the Simcoe hops that color it darker and flavor it differently than a wheat usually is. But this is a good brew, though at first at least a bit too vaguely fruity and bitter to be called delicious. Probably significantly better when fresh. Still, satisfying.
