Bottle. Pours a cloudy orange with a small white head. Aroma of bourbon and sweet malt, but strongly bourbon. Flavor of candy corn, sweet malt, and LOTS of bourbon. Very boozy and hard to get through. Ick. This is bad...not reminiscent in any way of an abt/quad. (262 characters)

Bought in Ohio, caged and corked.

Poured into a Snifter glass, pours a purple color which I've never seen before.

S: Oh man is this one sweet. Dark fruits dipped in sugar.

T: Again, sweet sugar bomb. Not my style. Was a total sweet tart. As it began to warm up it began to lighten up, but not enough.

M: Medium full bodied slight action. Hard to get past the sweet.

O: I had high hopes and was a total let down. I've never had a purple beer that I can recall and was just too sweet for me. Definitely something different and unlike any other Quad I've had before. (573 characters)

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a pint glass. 07/01/08.

Pours an orange amber color with about one finger of soft beige head. The head disappeared quickly and left no lacing. Aroma is mostly vanilla and whiskey. Not very quadruple-y in the aroma, the oak aging seems to have dominated the aroma.

The taste is very similar to the aroma. Whiskey, oak, vanilla, and alcohol are the primary flavors. The flavors that used to make up this quadruple are nearly indistinguishable. Usually oak aging will retain some qualities of the original beer while introducing subtle new flavors, but all I get from this is a whiskey/vanilla flavor.

Feel is thick and syrupy, low-medium carbonation. Drinkability is alright, considering the flavor profile. The alcohol is very present, and there is a lot of it.

This doesn't taste like an oak aged quadruple, it just tastes like whiskey and oak. It's disappointing that something which should have complex flavor profiles has been reduced to what it is. I really can't recommend this. If anything, try the original quadruple. (1,060 characters)

Poured into a tulip glass. Solid copper color with a decent two finger head. Fusel alcohols and belgian sugar in the nose. The favor is too sweet; there are a bunch of unfemented sugars in there. A sipper to say the least. Big malt body and little to no hop pressence. carbonation is fine for the style, but I would compare it to an old ale or old stock ale more than a quad. Not a friend of this brew. (402 characters)

Bottle poured into a snifter. Aromas of deep malts, fresh wood flooring ( I just re-did my house) some vanilla sweetness, and that aroma you get from a banana, minus the sweet banana flavor, but that tartness you get from a green banana. The green banana flavor comes out even more in the flavor, along with the super sweet plum-like malt. The mouth feel is really sweet and almost cloying. Full-bodied that finishes with a slight dryness and a little bitter. Overall, the oak barrel phenomenon is over taking beers. There is a little too much oak cloyingness to make this a really drinkable beer. Would go great with a caramel apple tart. (639 characters)

Bomber bought on 6/07, so at least 3.5 years old. I'd forgotten how bad I thought this was until I looked up the review just now. Decent carbonation, looks fine. Smell is pretty good, really nice vanilla notes, but hot.
Taste is the the same, nice barrel notes at first, hints of bread pudding, and them bam - red hot fusels, finishes like a gulp of cheap vodka. As my palate adjusted, which happened faster then I expected (and noticed happened in my last notes - is it the brew or intoxication), I really enjoyed the underlying oak aged quad flavors - but the burn in my gullet persisted as a reminder this would no doubt be better at 10%, unless they could clean up the ferment at this higher gravity. Would have been fun to age for like 6 years, but in my experience, fusels never really disappear.

Poured from a 22oz bomber (thx yobdoog!) into my New Belgium goblet, Blasphemy is a slightly hazed amber with a 2 finger, off-white head, that fades fairly quickly to a steady skim that leaves light lace.

Smell is very rich and sweet, more candi then fruits though, with some yeasty spice and lots of rubbing alcohol fusels.

Unfortunately, the taste is just as heavy on the solvents, not as sweet but very boozy, bourbon with a hint of cherries and black pepper. Like the other oaked Weyerbachers, there's a very enjoyable vanilla presence. Sadly, it's the only pleasant taste, and doesn't mange to hide the plasticy phenols that are running rampant. There is another, more subtle flavor towards the finish that just seems off, like spoiled salted vegetables or something. Not sure what it is, maybe the oak, or diactyl that isn't so obviously butterscotch? After really enjoying Insanity (and Prophecy, albeit less so), this is quite the disappointment. Letting it breath a bit may have helped, but if it wasn't so hard to drink, I'd never have know that...although it went from bad to ok, I'm still hesitent to bump up the score too much just b/c it's getting me drunk in a hurry! Sorry about the low score guys, but what can I say? I'm not impressed!

The mouthfeel is on the thicker side of average for a quad, a little under-attenuated, leaving a corn syrup stickiness in it's wake.

This was not very drinkable. It's super high ABV, tastes super strong, and generally not very good. I'd wager 999/1000 average beer drinkers would take one sip of this and say it sucks. Fans of quads, big beers, and weyerbacher may be more forgiving, but it's probably just the alcohol clouding their judgment after they power through a bottle of this beast! I've actually got another bottle of this in the cellar, from a trip to NY earlier this summer, that I'm now certainly in no hurry to break into. We'll see how a few years treat this. Right now it's pretty rough, like drinking like a sweet/weak brandy, 22 oz at a time! I honestly doubt it will really improve that drastically, but I'll surely forget (or maybe never forget!) about this one long enough that who knows? (3,037 characters)

Served from a 22oz. bomber at between fridge and cellar temp in a Duvel Tulip.

A - Medium chestnut brown -- completely transparent. Massive uprush of carbonation after the completion of the pour, resulting in a massive, bubbly off-white head that reduces to a more compact, frothier state after a few moments. Lacing is decent, and head retention is average for this style.

S - Massively sweet and malty, with quite pronounced vanillin and a hint of sweet cherry. Not much else can cut through the massive sweetness, so no real hoppiness in the nose. For an oaked up strong beer, it lacks the depth and subtelty that should really be present.

T - Super sweet with a cordial-like acidity and alcohol bite. Some yeastiness and warm woodiness comes through in the middle and some hop dryness is detected in the back. The swallow is hot and full of alcohol. If there were yeast in the bottle, I would normally swirl it in at this point for this style, but there is none available to perhaps cut through the jagged edges. Aftertaste, however is fairly pleasant. Too little too late, however.

M - Slightly watery going in, but puffing to a nice, soft pillow in the mouth. Swallow is also a bit watery, and quite hot from the alcohol. Belly warmth is unmissable.

D - I was never a big fan of Weyerbacher's Quad, and unfortunately, oak aging does not lend it the help I hoped it would as far as mellowing. The oak overtones are very welcome -- I love oaked up beers -- but oaking an out-of-balance beer doesn't seem to fix that aspect.

Drinking it young reveals a ton of character flaws that will definitely round out given the proper time and storage, but once a beer hits the shelves, it should be ready to drink IMHO. I think I may buy just one more bottle and sit on it for three years and try again. If it rounds out the way I think it may, it will be well worth the wait, even up to the tune of a full point gain or more in every rating category. Fingers crossed... (1,970 characters)

I drank this from a bottle into a chalice.

It pours a medium brown, almost a dark tea. There is light tan finger head high, lasts about 1 minute with good lacing.

The aroma is light with sweet malts, caramel, and banana.

The taste is so-so kinda of similar to Rochefort but a Rochefort that has kind of gone bad.

Mouthfeel is ok, ok drinkability. Check that 5 sips in I have to dump it. Not good. (401 characters)

Pours a light golden color with a reddish tint. Slight head on the pour, but nothing that sticks around. Smell is alcohol and belgian sugars. Taste is, wow, very hot. This thing is like drinking a straight shot. This definitely needs some time to calm down. This beer will absolutely light you up! If you can get past the alcohol, there is a nice Quad underneath there, but God help you if you can find it. Full and complex on the mouthfeel. This is a beer that the whole time you're drinking it, there's no mistaking that you're going to be f'd up. This needs to be put down and cellared for a very long time. (610 characters)

A tan/ruby pour; a bit hazy. Two finger head that reappears after a quick swirl. Not sure this is a quadrupel, almost looks like a barley wine.
Smells like one, too. High alcohol in the nose. Some sweet vanilla and caramel creep in, along with some fig and malt.
Taste is thin and full of alcohol. Oak and vanilla dominate. Caramel, malt, prune and biscuit come in waves.
Thin and filmy. Does not finish clean one bit. Again, this is a quadrupel?? If so, if fails to impress. (476 characters)

22oz bottle poored into a snifter.

Its a transparent amber/orange colored brew with a white fluffy head that almost completely disappears and left very minimul lacing. It smells strongly of rubing alcohol but also has a wiskey/oak smell, some malt, hint of fruity esters and a very nice vanilla smell. Overall the taste is dominated by an acidic chemical/solvent type of flavor. Its unfortunate because there are some nice flavores there that get pretty blown away like vanilla, oak and some slight apple cider. The mouth feel was very nice however I really struggled to drink the whole bottle. (595 characters)

Appearance-It didn't look that good with a head that fell to almost nothing almost immediately.
Not even a vigorous swirl could bring much head back.

Smell-The smell is quite complex with a woody aroma, I also get vanilla and dried fruit, there is also a distinct Belgian yeast "funk" (not negative) as well, this would be otherwise joy to smell were it not for the solvent like assault by the alcohol esters that starts immediately and lingers in the sinuses long after the sniff.

Taste-The taste is very much like the nose, very complex, only more so. There is definitely a wood aged aspect here, raw toothpick, charcoal. Elements of both bourbon and scotch, not necessarily smooth ones. The dried fruits also make an appearance as well in caramelized rum raisin way. There is an underlying sweetness that is pushed back by the solvent like alcohol. The Belgian strong ale nature does make an appearance after, there is a characteristic yeasty-ness and a little wheat like grain. However, as with the nose, all of these qualities are overwhelmed by the big alcohol esters.

M-Medium body with a fairly thick syrupy consistency that coats the mouth in a pleasing way. Carbonation is a little prickly, unexpected given the lack of head.

D-Not very drinkable, the alcohol is overwhelming to me. I have had many brews in the 10-12% that did not overwhelm like this. (1,378 characters)

A cross between deep bronze and garnet; clear body. Thin head with smatterings of lacing.

Initial sweet/sour cherry aroma, high alcohol. A small swirl brings some malt into the picture, but it mellows the cherry out to fruitcake. Not often can I point something out so exactly, but this smells like alcoholic fruitcake.

The cherry oxidation in this is rampant. There is a small amount of oak, but you have to strain to taste it.

Sticky and drying, pretty evenly carbonated.

Way too much cherry and hot alcohol here. I've had big beers like this that hide the alcohol much better. (583 characters)

22oz. bomber poured into a couple of snifters. Has a light amber color and a white foamy head with good retention and some lace. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, maple and a hint of oak. Smell is quite pleasant. Tastes to match with a heavy booze flavor and finishes cloyingly sweet. Mouthfeel is very heavy. Tough to drink this one, it might benefit from some aging. (361 characters)

750 cork and cage bomber
Poured very pretty into a goblet two or three fingers of creamy head, chidingopper cloudy color. Smells strongly of hot alcohol with molasses and fruity.
Tastes very strong booze taste, caramel, lot of heat and very sweet. Describe as whisky candy.
Mouth feel is quite carbonated leaves lips sticky with a medium body.
Over all the price is cheap 8$ lot of alcohol not my cup of brew, the booziness is overpowering hiding the quality of the beer also felt there was too much residualsweetness. (518 characters)

Big old 22oz bomber of this one pours into my glass a fiery red orange hue with good clarity and a small head that quickly fades away. Aromas start with sweet malts, toffee and fruits. Woody oak barrel accents and a boozy undertone. Mellow vanilla running underneath.

First sip brings sweet malts upfront with a syrupy undertone. Toffee and fruits wind their way in and out. Big bourbon and woody boozy accents seep through this brew. Flows down with a lingering boozy sweetness and oak tannins. Not really to my liking.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and a bit slick and syrupy. Mellow carbonation. Overall it's a bit too hot and sweet for me personally, but there are good flavors running throughout. Glad I got to try it but I enjoy the other Weyerbacher barrel aged offerings much better. (791 characters)

Weyerbacher- Blasphemy

Appearance- Dark reddish brown with a big thick foamy head.
Smell- Strong tropical fruit. Pinapple, coconut, banana. Light woodsy aroma. Wood chips.
Taste- Very mild with a strong alcohol bite in the end/ aftertaste. The body is comprised of a "malibu" type flavor- coconut, pinapple, cranberry, banana/ cloves. Slight oak wood chip flavor comes through at times.
Mouthfeel- very smooth and mild, almost bland. Finishes off boozey- strong with the alcohol. This is 11.8% but definitely doesn't seem so.

Overall- this might sound like Blasphemy but this beer was a letdown. Just bland and boring. I guess an aged bottle's flavor would kick it up a level or 2. Buy this and age it- thats my take!

sidenote- I "aged", if you can call it that, this beer for 1 whole month!! (804 characters)

22 oz bottle. $7.99. I think I got it at Whole Foods in Raleigh. I've had it for at least a year, but there's no date, so I don't know how old it really is.

Appearance: Cloudy, rusty color. Little head, almost no lacing-- maybe two little spots. A lot of the cloudiness is chill haze, and it mostly clears up on warming. Meh.

Smell: Smells very sweet and very fruity. Raisins and some lighter stuff like apricots. Yeast is bready and a little spicy. Ethanol is pretty noticable. Nice vanilla notes.

Taste: Tastes good up front-- sweet fruit and raisins, overripe bananas, little clove, and some nice oaky notes. As it gets to the back of the tongue though, its all ethanol and solventy heat. The aftertaste is pretty good though.

Mouthfeel: Soft and sticky, then sharp and thin as you swallow what tastes and feels like bad moonshine.

Overall: All in all, I don't really care for it. I do quite like some aspects of it though-- the raisiny and yeasty smells/flavors are good, and the barrel aging seems to have done the beer well. However, like the regular QUAD, this thing is a hot, boozy, mess. (1,102 characters)

A corked and caged 750 mL bottle from inlimbo77; thanks man! Bottled on 04/15/2011 (and best by 04/15/2015), and opened almost one later. Split into a chalice and a goblet, reviewed from the former (girlfriend requested the Chimay goblet...).

Pours a light brown/caramel color with some amber and deep copper hues. Virtually no head develops, save for a very thin ring of off-white bubbles barely surrounding the surface of the liquid; no retention or lacing, and the ABV is the only reason this one didn’t get scored lower here (I mean, at ~12% I can’t be too picky, can I?).

The aroma is lighter than anticipated for a quad as well, with date, raisin, plum, some black cherry, cane sugar, light caramel, and toasted malt coming off first. A bit of ethanol pulls through as well, but it’s quite subtle and seems to lend a faint “buttered popcorn” aroma as well (theater-only style).

Taste is, again, lighter than expected for the style. Perhaps this blends a bit with the mouthfeel, but it just seems thin and lacking in the usual unfermented sugar and flavor goodness that more traditional quads boast. Flavor-wise, elements of caramel, toffee, roasted almond, date, plum, raisin, cane sugar, wood (oak and cedar, primarily), and prominent EtOH are the mark of this brew. Much more alcohol on the tongue than in the nose, unfortunately.

Mouthfeel, as alluded, is thin and almost worthy of the descriptor “watery.” The sugary flavors are felt as an almost gritty but certainly dry finish, the alcohol and it’s accompanying burn contributing to the latter.

Overall, this was a “meh” beer for me, seemingly average for the style; I've had worse and better. With almost a year on it, I had hoped the EtOH would have died down a bit more as there seems to be a solid flavor profile lurking in the background. I just wished it had thickened up a bit and brought the intended flavors to the forefront more. Still, another new brew to me that I'm happy to have tried! (1,990 characters)

very clear dark brown that has a lot of ruby highlights with a rather thick yet consistent off white foamy head, that dissipates in less than a minute. big ol' sheets of lacing on the side.

very heavy hit of booze off the bat, not a very subtle presence of bourbon, more scotch like than anything. I want to think there is more, but I cant get past the bourbon. Maybe shouldn't have used my chalice.

The taste has a similarly overpowering characteristic, yet it is a bit easier to detect other flavors than in the aroma. I also get some spearmint and sweet malt, not quite toffee like, with some light fruity esters.

Mouthfeel is super dry, and a bit on the thin side for a quad. almost no trace of carbonation, somewhat creamy though. Dry.

I don't particularly care for this, so I can't really comment on the drinkability.

this beer is not all that great, it disappoints in the noise, but redeems itself slightly in the flavor, though not enough.

afterthought: it kind of tastes like a whiskey and coke with crappy whiskey, so still not bad. (1,048 characters)

From notes:

Pours a dark, golden chestnut/honey brown color with ruby edges and a half dinger white foam head that quickly fades. Minimal spots of lace.

Boozy aroma with hints of dark fruit, oak, vanilla and sweet alcohol. Hints of dark cherry, plum and raisin but it's dominated by the alcohol and barrel presence.

Very sweet with again, a lot of boozy heat as well as a lot of dark fruit, oak and vanilla. I'm picking up hints of raisin, plum and dark cherries and more boozy heat in the warm finish. (505 characters)

Poured into a snifter it has a clear amber black body with a quickly dissipating 1 inch slight beige head (no lacing). Smell is of buttered toast, dried fruit, vanilla, bourbon, cherry, caramel, toffee, plum, and prune. Taste is the same with even more buttered toast, a okay amount of bourbon, vanilla, cherry, burnt sugar, caramel, and brown sugar. Full oily mouth feel and body with a good amount of alcohol bite. Really a bad quad, maybe I just picked up a bad bottle with a ton of butter but I this is totally disappointing. (529 characters)

A- Amber with cream-colored head that stays as a single layer.

S- Alcohol at first. The most alcoholic smelling beer I've had. Some banana, a tinge of sour fruit, overridden by tons of sweet malt. A bit of oak, but just a tinge.

T- Initially sweet, cloyingly so. Some oak coming in, and then TONS of alcohol that overrides everything else. Some golden raisins, banana, oak, and honey. Finish is alcohol and sickly sweet malt.

M- Smooth, full-bodied at first, medium-low carbonation, a very warming finish with the sweetness leaving a slick, unpleasant feeling on the tongue.

D- Not really drinkable. Far too strong. The alcohol makes it simply too intense, even for an intense beer lover... overall, i think it'd be good if you lay it down for a couple years... everything's too intense right now. (810 characters)

Picked up a single in a mixed case form the brewery.

Whoa, put this one back, it ain't ready yet. I'm not saying it's a bad beer, but it feels like it needs some time. The nose has some great vanilla and oak notes, but they're overwhelmed by alcohol there and in the flavor. There's a background sweetness in the taste, but again the booze prevails. I recommend this beer because it seems like there's some great stuff going on, but let it sit for at least 6 months before consuming. (486 characters)

750 mL bottle, appears to have been bottled 04/06/11. Allowed to warm some before being poured into my Brooklyn Brewery tulip.

Weyerbacher Blasphemy pours hazy, and is somewhere between brown and maroon. There are very nice light red highlights shining through. The bone colored head is barely there, fades quickly, and doesn't leave a stitch of lacing. A disappointment all around, although I do have to cut the beer just a little slack on this count due to the prodigious alcohol level. The barrel aging is readily apparent in he aroma. Notes of caramel and vanilla immediately jump out, before fading in with some dark berry and fruit smells. The nose is balanced in equal measure by a spicy phenolic character and a warming bourbon and boozy note, which could stand to be a little more subdued. The flavor works off that blueprint, but dials up the alcoholic heat and bourbon even a bit more The plum and raisin flavors up front don't seem as dark and intense as they normally are. The peppery phenols are there, but largely drowned out by the hot alcohol aspect of the beer. The body is somewhat full (though also somewhat dried out for a 12% beer) and nicely creamy. It's aided by an expansive, yet subdued carbonation. I had high expectations for Blasphemy, as I think Belgian style beers do better in bourbon barrels than a lot of brewers realize, and I think Weyerbacher does some great barrel aging (Heresy, and especially Insanity).
