750ml bottle into a goblet.

A: Pours a semi-cloudy chestnut color. The head...well, it sucks. Not even a finger high (off-white shade), with a fizzy texture similar to cola and horrible retention. No lacing, natch - but I do get some alcohol legs on the side of the glass.

S: Nice smell. I don't get the vibrant dark fruits I do from the best Belgian quads, but the whiskey tone helps to compensate somewhat with touches of oak and vanilla. Some nuttiness comes through as well. Letting it open up doesn't really improve it, but it doesn't deteriorate, either.

T: It's fruitier than the aroma indicated, in a good way. The barrel comes through initially, providing some oak and vanilla flavors. These notes continue all the way to the fruity-yet-alcoholic finish. I have to say, the alcohol isn't hidden particularly well. On the other hand, the booze has defined flavors of rum, raisins, and marzipan. After a while, the flavors become quite vinous (at times, almost tomato-y, but not quite). There is some complexity to be found: after many sips, I'm picking up notes of brown sugar and graham cracker. All in all, it's a pleasant quad with a nicely subtle barrel presence, but it isn't top tier, either.

M: The booze is almost startling on first sip - not quite to '13 Parabola levels, but definitely there. It calms down slightly after a while, but only slightly. Like most quads/BSDAs, it's well carbonated and almost airy on the tongue. Even better, the barrel aging hasn't made it too thin-bodied or clean finishing - and yet, it's still fairly drinkable at the end of the day.

O: This is pretty good. Like many 'Murican quads, it lacks that special something to rise it up to Belgian standards - and not even barrel aging can change that. I definitely think it's worth a try, though. I mean, it's pretty well priced as far as a barrel-aged beer goes, just don't expect brilliance.

Bottle purchased at Nathaniel Square Corner Store in Rochester.

Pours a crimson brown, with a small half inch head, and not much lacing.

Smells like caramel, cherries, booze, whiskey, and Belgian yeast.

The taste is similar. There's a lot of good stuff going on here, but it's hard to drink due to how boozy this is. This seems to be a common problem with Weyerbacher BA beers. Lots of Belgian fruity yeast esters- some cherry, lots of raisins and plums, very sweet malt, and a strong lingering boozy whiskey burn. I get a little bit of vanilla and caramel, but I wish it came through stronger- as it stands, the booziness washes those flavors away.

Medium bodied, thicker than the typical Weyerbacher BA beer. A very slow sipper, due to the alcohol. Low carbonation.

Overall not bad, but needs 3+ years to calm and cool down.

750ml corked bottle purchased from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh, PA on 6/19/14. Served in tulip glass.

A - Deep red velvet, one finger head on pour sinking to thin residual head quickly. Moderate lacing.

S - Bourbon, caramel and vanilla dominate.

T - Bourbon, chocolate, and caramel up front drying out slowly. Vanilla and caramel lingers on the palate.

M - Rich and creamy but balanced with appropriate carbonation. Leaves mouth a little sticky.

O - A sipping beer for sure, Weyerbacher demonstrates its talents with maltier ales and lives up to what a Quadruple should be. Definitely not an everyday beer, heavy and rich for the holidays.
