750ml corked and caged bottle which I believe is from a fresh release. The brew appears a clouded mahogany color with lighter orange clarity seen around the edges. A tan khaki head rests atop with decent retention.

The aroma comes across very sweet like candy or beet sugar moreso than malt. As I smell the beer more, I pick up a little hint of caramel, toffee and vanilla with fruity alcohol. Some herbal and cheesy aspect evolves as it opens up.

The taste is sweet like candy then notes of toffee, caramel and vanilla come out from the barrel aging along with a little herbal note mixing with whiskey. There is a raw woody aspect and mild oxidation noticed as it warms up.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is boozy yet some of that is hidden by the excessive amount of residual sugar. After drinking some of this I could not tell if I was drunk or on a sugar high...

Bottle (undated)
Pours an auburn color, seemingly clear but translucent dye to color. The head pours to a decent level of medium bubbles, but fades fairly quickly; a decent swirl is needed to bring it back for a couple seconds. The nose is dark fruit, tart - currant, raisin, but there is a significant wine feel to the scents, as well. Other sniffs I get a light tartness of blackberry and hints of alcohol.

The taste starts with the dark fruit from the nose, with some of the perceived tartness missing. Honey or maybe even diluted molasses sweetness comes first, then a fig taste that seems to want to tend to raisin, but is subdued by a drying woody flavor. From this comes an alcohol burn, which isn't storm and doesn't last too long. The ending is more if the dry wood notes.

This is an iffy style for me, but I enjoyed the flavors, and enjoyed the subtle complexities in the beer. The beer had an unexpected thinness (watery feel) too it, more noticeable as it warmed, but that was ok. On the other hand, the complexities mellowed as well, and since the style and ABC in general would make it a sipping beer for me, this prevented it from a higher rating.
