Pours a deep opaque black with a thin diminishing tan head. Aroma is slight roasted barley. The taste is a decent blend of roasted malts, dried fruits, and bitter chocolate, the Belgian yeast is present, but does not overpower the stout characteristics. The beer is certainly heavy and shows every bit of its 13.4 percent, this is certainly a sipper that was at room temperature by the time it was gone. This one made for an enjoyable sipper, one that would certainly be better in the winter.

I have had mixed feelings with the other Weyerbacher anniversary brews but this is a real winner.Poured into a small tulip glass a jet black with a thinner mocha head,the Belgian yeast used in this brew shows thru, the chocolate is intense as well as the roast,the Belgian yeast used gives off a slightly spicey phenolic note,the aromas are extremely complex.Like alot of Weyerbacher "big" beers this is hot but this is a brand spankin new beer so I'll let it slide,flavors are intense as in roasted to the hilt along with bitter unsweetened chocolate and alcohol dipped dark fruit with a bit of a racey drying finish.A great beer to cellar,its a bit hot right now but shows great flavor and the mouthfeel could not be better.

Anniversary beers should be all about doing it up big time, and looks like Weyerbacher has that goal with this 13.6-percent abv Belgian Imperial Stout, whichis brewed with five malts and a touch of oats, and fermented with an Abbey yeast strain.

The black liquid pours on thick with tiny bubbles struggling to move through the viscous mass in the glass. Eventually it forms a proper two fingers of thick light-brown head. Extremely aromatic with dark milk chocolate, mild espresso, faint Madeira wine and black currants. Full, nearly syrupy body with a very deep creamy smoothness. Big roasted flavor, little acrid, but more just a charcoal flavor. Alcohol is a bit pushy, and it should be for it strength, but it never becomes unruly as it was a deceiving slow warmth to start but soon drops a spicy peppercorn flavor and mild heat on the palate. Light on the hops. Yeast tries to break through but is pushed down by the roasted malt character, slight oat sweetness and burnt caramel flavor in the semi-sweet roasty finish.

An epic ale for their 13th, the only drawback about this beer is that it is a limited edition. To hell with getting one bottle to give it a try. Go for the case to stock your cellar this winter.

Pours a deep carmel dark with 2 fingers of off white/carmel head. Lacing, excellent pour.

Smells medium roasted malt, deep abv, some bakers chocolate, some coffee.

Dont know about BA's style pronunciation, but I get Old Ale with chocolate/espresso tastes. Exceptional Ale considering the ABV and palatte.

Smooth carbonation, excellent flavor, good balance.

Love it. Shame its a one time thing. Im curious what its going to be like in a year. I have 1 more, id like to get a few more.

Served in a tulip, this beer was a very dark brown, almost black, color with a thin orange/tan head. A tiny bit of lacing. It had a coffee and milk chocolate aroma. Intriguing taste. Coffee and milk chocolate, kind of alternating with coffee bitterness here and sweet chocolate there. Wonderful. The alcohol was well-hidden, but at 13.40% ABV, this beer is meant to be sipped and savored.

oofah, this one is a monster of an imperial kick ass stout ! 22 ounce bomber. Pours black and mean looking, super thick, beefy and viscous, minor head/lace, low carbonation. Nose of burnt malts, black licorice and very ripe black figs. Mega malt, dark and luscious, heady, flavorful, packing a world class punch...more dark malt, chocolate, dark ripe fruit, dark rum/brandy, dark coffee, chocolate fudge. Black with a tan head that quickly recedes to a ring around the glass with no lacing. Smell is a bit hot with alcohol, but also has some nice stuff going on in it like baker's chocolate, vanilla, cream, espresso, and some licorice. Taste is bitter chocolate, coffee, earthy, licorice, dark fruit, molasses, and oak (though I don't think this was oak aged at all). I enjoy this beer, probably about the best Belgian inspired stouts I've had. Worthy of a try.

Appears dark black with large thick tan mocha head really creamy textured foam here almost custard like pour as it layers. Fine lacing forms around my Piraat chalice nicely head retention is great.

Aroma brings semi sweet dark cocoa kicks with creamy alcohol infused rounded edges. Somewhat timid aromatics with mild charred oak and minimal smokiness, dark ripened fruits rich in depth and sweetness.

Flavor again not alot of depth but the straight forward charred oak dark chocolate creamy sensations do enough for me and the 13.6 is a sizzling, soothing alcohol burn with ripe fruit notes soaking in. This beer will do great with some aging, but it's pretty effin' tasty as I type this.

Mouthfeel is full bodied but never thick, and as I mentioned the alcohol content does really burn a bit on the palate. Carbonation level is pretty low not a lot of bubbly action really goes down smooth.

Drinkability I'm not going to lie this one needs more aging, still hot with the alcohol. Flavors need to mature and come together with a little bit of cellaring, not very complex and a bit underwhelming for me. I guess I wasn't really on board for the last few Anniversary releases including 10-12, but I generally love Weyerbacher brews. For instance they nailed the bottled Slam Dunkel, excellent stuff.

Got this at Green's in Atlanta.

Pours an opaque black color with a one-finger dark tan head. The head recedes to nothing with a thick ring around the glass. Lacing sheets nicely then breaks up - not very sticky.

Smells mostly like dark fruits. There's a mild tinge of alcohol and roastiness as well.

Tastes very interesting, like an Imperial Dubbel. Dark fruits stand out the most, with a lot of sweetness. There's a little bit of roastiness in the flavor just as in the smell, and there's a mild bitter ending. The bitterness sticks around more on the lips. Alcohol is there but not as huge as the ABV would suggest.

Mouthfeel is very nice. It's got a great thickness with very fine carbonation. Great mouthfeel.

I don't think this is necessarily absurdly drinkable as a beer, but as an RIS it certainly is. Goes down way too fast.

Overall this is a very interesting beer. The best way to describe it in my opinion is Imperial Dubbel. It's a bit expensive but it's worth it. Give this a shot if you can find it.

A- This beer pours a jet black dense body with a dark brown head of thick foam that fades to a ring after a few sips. The beer is a bit to dense to see any carbonation except for a random tiny bubble that trails up the side of the glass.

S- This beer has a dark roasted malt aroma that melds with a coffee roasted black malt quality and finishes with a soft cola note that turns fusel as the beer warms.

T- The taste of cream and black roasted malt has some vinous and red wine tannin notes to it with a charred black finish. There are some raisin flavors that come though the finish as it warms a bit. There is a light roasted bitterness that lingers after each sip but only for a moment.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a chewy texture and a soft alcohol heat that is a bit fusel.

D- This beer has some big roasted flavors but not much depth or character once you get past the roasted notes, making the rest of the flavor a bit light in taste. It was very easy to drink for a 13 %ABV beer but I don't think age would improve the taste as the alcohol plays a bit of a supporting role for the black malt.

Dark with a stoutish lurk and an even brown halo of head clinging to a Maudite snfter heftily.... head settles quickly .... appearance befitting of the Stonehenge label... balanced aroma, almost alcohol-hidden within tinges of smoke, sweet sugar and dairy aspects.... nothing springs up/out as unique.... smooth, warm at the throat--in a cordial/bourbon way, not quite scotch... a bit oily and elusive between the teeth... first sip is hot... welcome on this 5 degree night though! defintely alcoholic... milky presence arrives at mid-sip and seers with a furnace of malt... as a desertif, this would pair wonderfully with any number of chocolate dishes, although it may bully them.... the beer is more booty from my pillaging of Ryan's fantasy baseball merits... as the nightcap, this probably will hit me full on tomorrow morning... for now, pleasantly balanced and better than the sum of its parts...

Weyerbacher- Thirteen

A- Dark viscous black with a huge beaded head. Bubbly filmy lacing down the glass.
S- Very sweet sugary chocolate cake batter, strong red wine, touch of vinegar.
T- Holy sweetness. Cheek hurting sweet with huge doses of figs, prunes, raisins. A solid chocolate finish.
M- Again sweet as hell, but will subdue after a few sips. Very fruity and boozy through the body with a dry warm chocolatey finish.

Overall- Very sweet with sour notes at first but toning down and mellowing into a good boozy sipper. Alc. is quite present but not overpowering. A nice evening beer!

Totally opaque, the sun has been denied! seriously dark, and bold look, viscous-thick pour. the head is an activ but dense creamy-brown with darker brown tints mixed throughout.

The nose is full of roastie chocolate malt, cherries and big fruits, sweet Hershey's chocolate syrup runs through the malt aroma. Herbal balance and a slight wet-cardboard scent, but it's very subtle. The aroma only gets stronger as time goes by with even more malty aroma's popping out like grahm crackers.

Wow, I must comment on the feel before th flavor; it's a giant-full bodied beast with a very smooth feel, but also includes the up-lifting Belgian feel, snappy and peppery but smooth and thick,,,oh yeah. Brownies and spicey herbs is the first two flavor's I get, thick, rightous malt with a killer belgian-yeast complexity! The large 13% abv. does not come off as "hot" at all, it's very well-hidden, which means the rest of the brew is bad-ass enough to handle this big abv. and not only handle it, but it hides it! The malty complexity is as good as I've ever had, including RIS's like Darklord. Giant amounts of oats Oakie-wood and cedar smoke, chocolate and vanilla in the malt, they come in thick layers of flavor, one after the other! My lips are very sticky from this stuff. A sweet, wet-bready taste in the finish, crisp, peppery but coffee-smooth.

Briliant brewing, adventurous and bold but with balance. I'm simply loving these Belgian-inspired big Stouts.

Pours a dark oil black with a large brown foamy head. This is an excellant looking brew. The smell is pungent with roasted malt,alcohol,and dark fruit. The taste has a bitter hop flavor with the creaminess of a stout. Hops,chocolate,alcohol,dark fruit,and roasted malt dominate the flavors here. The m/f is heavy with the double IPA and stout mixing well. A different kind of beer from a brewery that's willing to try different things.

Bomber into a Chimay chalice.

Appearance: Jet black, dark mocha-colored head which dissipates too quickly. Could be the glass since it hasn't been washed in a while, though I did a thorough washing as much as I could to make sure if anything seemed odd it wasn't because of the glass. That said, the jet black color is great, but the head retention isn't much, and it takes a fierce pour to get any kind of a substantial foaminess going.

Smell: Visceral and powerfully boozy at first, but a warranted booziness, and a heady one, with hints of sherry and scotch. Then the aromas start to come in, the dark berries, with raspberry being seemingly prominent, along with rich chocolate mousse, bursting vinous red wine complexity, almost pinot-like with its dark fruits, then there's some maple flavors and some pure vanilla extract. All around complex, very rich and balanced, with so much going on from the beginning until it warms to room temperature.

Taste: A fantastic combination of rich dark chocolate, bold vinous flavors, and heady booziness. Initial flavors of dark chocolate malts and big fruit flavors, raspberry and maraschino cherries, slides into rich chocolate mousse and chocolate cream, along with hints of scotch, maple, and minor coffee mocha flavors, as a nice touch without becoming too mocha or coffee-like, as some bigger stouts can often lean toward. Long finish with heavy malt flavors, but as it finally warms to room temperature there's some citrus hops mixed with darker berries to become the icing on the cake. One of the best stouts I've ever had as far as complexity, and this is in the "green" state, which for Weyerbacher, most of the time, for me, is not really a term, as I can't imagine this getting any better.

Mouthfeel: Richly huge and chewy, with still a lighter edge, which doesn't make it cloying and makes it easy to sip like a fine scotch or bourbon. Pretty great.

Drinkability: Around $7, which was nothing for me, as I was waiting to get a hold of this guy for a while. I wish I had a case of this for the future. Hands down one of my favorite stouts of all time. The Eagles / Cowboys game is now over, and as a Giants fan, I knew that someone had to lose. The game was great, though, and this was the perfect accompaniment with its hugeness. Complex as hell, not for the faint of heart, but then again, it's so balanced that even someone who's not used to such stout heaviness would be able to appreciate the subtleties and nuances of such a brew. Bravo, again, and seemingly as always, Weyerbacher. I can't wait to see what happens next.

I love to split hairs: label says 13.6%, and the name of this beer is probably XIII. Whatever, let's get to the stuff that really matters...

Glugs out syrupy, oily black, and the head, while modest, is a very dark brown. Looks like they roasted the living crap out of everything including the hops! Big and dark, beastly and black.

Interesting to get such vinous qualities from the nose of a big-ass stout, but that's what's happening here. Must be the Belgian yeast strain. Raisins, graham cracker and chocolate lie just under the surface in this very grape-y, yeasty aroma. Not nearly is roastified as the looks suggest. Alcohol intrudes just a tad too much with warming, the only thing keeping me from giving it a higher mark.

Flavor brings on a huge glowing wave of chocolate, Concord grape, other dark berries, vanilla, cherry, graham cracker, toasted pumpernickel, cola, marshmallow. It lasts and lasts and lasts. The alcohol shows up and lays down a bed for the flavors to do their thing, nothing more than a supportive warm glow. The finish is as long as the flavor, spreading out forever and bringing cola, chocolate and Concord grape with it.

Mouthfeel is both full and bright, with a good bit of carbonation while also being sticky. This is sensibly carbonated, and that means it doesn't overwhelm in a soda-like way as some other Belgian-style stouts do. Seems perfect for the flavor profile.

Belgian-style stouts are tricky. They're often too carbonated, and some don't come close to tasting like a stout. This one brings together aspects of an imperial stout and infuses Belgian character while never dominating it. It remains a stout. A big, bold, unique, delicious stout. Now, I don't get "drinkability." I need to review BA's meaning of that, because I consider this highly drinkable. It's delicious, it has no glaring faults, it's delicious, and I just want to keep sipping and sipping. Slowly. And it's delicious. Forget session-ing, this is a superb beer that deserves your palate's full attention. Wish I'd bought more than one, as I'd love to see how this ages...

Pours a deep thick impenetrable black with a nice tan mocha head that recedes fairly quickly and leaves "ok" lacing.

Nose is pretty strange here with ample amounts of dark fruit, and sugar. Some licorice and a bit of anise in here as well. Roasted malt is there, but there is certainly an odd smell coming out of this one. Nose is quite belgian.

Taste follows with big roasted malt flavor, some major dark fruit. Skim slick chocolate and minimal coffee. Anise is present as is a touch of molasses. This is defenitely a belgian style imperial stout. Belgian yeast like flavor.

Mouthfeel is a bit thin, as most belgian style imperial stouts tend to be. Quite slick, good carbonation.

Drinkability is pretty good for the abv, but the heat does catch up to you towards the end of the taste. Goes down easily, but i wouldnt want to be having more than one of these. Make no mistake about it, this beer, as of right now, is HOT.

Overall a pretty good belgianish imperial stout. Very unique, and the belgian aspect is quite clear. Dark fruit is more prominent here than in any other stout i can think of off the top of my head. A unique and worthy beer. I am excited to see how this one is with a few years on it. Good beer.

This one more than delivered. At most two years old. Pours black thickish with small head. The second half of the bottle had only a token head,of off-white. Aromas of roast and chocolate. The taste is rich chocolate, some roasted barley rather than coffee. Tremendous. The yeast softens the mouth, ad nowhere gets in the way, it may have fallen off and that hit the spot.

Wow, what a stunning beer! As soon as I poured it and the dark brown and orange tinged head started to rise I knew I was in for something really rich. I was expecting an Imperial stout but what I got was so much more. I initially found lots of dark malt flavors with chocolate and roastiness and burnt sugar and dark fruit. I was thinking that it was an Imperial stout, and that I was tasting "burnt currant" but the fruit didn't go away, and in-fact became clearer and more dominant as it warmed. It was berry-like, and very much like dark red grapes... even vinous. It was also a bit estery, and a subtle touch spicy. It reminded me of Flying Fish's Abbey Dubbel, and then it hit me, it's the same yeast. It's 'Chimay' via White Labs or wherever, and it works really, really well. The dark-skinned vinous fruit and subtle spice cut through the malt, keeping it drinkable. Although there's a bit of alcohol that might be helping with that too! (I didn't notice it until 2/3 through an Imperial pint though). The bitterness is restrained, and the carbonation is kept in check to leave it smooth but still lend a little zest to the tongue. In the finish some hop flavor is present, and it's leafy/floral and perhaps a bit grassy as well as being moderately spiced (or is that the yeast or alcohol?). And surprisingly, it fades rather easily for such a big beer. I mean, it's still there, it doesn't just disappear, and in fact it lingers on quite nicely, but in a mild way, without completely coating or becoming sticky in any way.

In conclusion, I found it to be a really unique beer. It's kind of like a quadruple, but with more chocolate to it. Or should we call it a Belgian-style Imperial stout? Regardless, it's super rich and satiating, and complex enough to nip at for 3, or even 4, small glasses. I didn't have any cheese to try it with, but I did have some crusty sesame seed bread and that made a really great combination.

If there's any flaw to this beer, it's one of two things - head retention, which is obviously hindered by the high alcohol; or the actual appearance of the alcohol in the flavor. However, a very rough pour will bring up a marvelously thick head of creamy mousse that holds for quite some time. It still doesn't stick to the glass real well, but it looks good just sitting there! AND, at 13.4% it's pretty impressive that you can drink 6 or 7 ounces before the alcohol really makes itself known; and it seems to fit in quite nicely. There are beers that almost require the alcohol to show, and this is one of them.

Very nice! Superbly done! A brilliant anniversary beer, and absolutely worth seeking out!

My sisters scored me a case at the Friday the 13th unveiling.
This poured a true-stout-like black, with reddish tinges. Although this is called an American Strong Ale, under a blind taste test, I'd have to call it a stout, so forgive me.
The smell was a deep, penetrating inhale, less coffee-ish/toffee-ish than many a stout. Perhaps this is the American Strong Ale portion emerging?
Taste was OMG. I was lucky enough to enjoy a FFF Dreadnaught and 2008 Dark Lord from FFF with friends friday night. This taste was the true equal of the DL. Mouthfeel was likewise on top of the chart - a richness and complexity that shouldn't have been there for such a recent brewing. I scored drinkability high - I preceeded the XIII with one of my 12 oz bottles of Decadence. I like strong beer. The XIII, may be the top offering yet from Weyerbacher. The High ABV for most may warrant a lower drinkability rating, but I am good with mine.

A- Pours a dark black color with a light tan head.

S- The aroma features some dark malts, chocolate, hints of vanilla and a good amount of alcohol.

T- The taste is roasted malts and chocolate with a big boozy finish. There is no question that the alcohol is present in the taste, but it is not a big alcohol mess like some of the higher ABV beers.

M- The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

D- This is definitely a sipper at 13%, but it was an enjoyable beer that should age pretty well. I have a couple more bottles, so I am interested to see how these will be in a few years.

Weyerbacher XIII pours a very dark, chocolate fudge color. Looks onyx to me. No light's cutting through at all. It's quite ominous. It's topped with a gorgeous, dark mocha colored head. It rises to about a finger or so in depth and falls quickly. It was doomed given the 13%+ abv. Saying lacing is light is generous. It's minimal at best. Good, nonetheless.

The nose is good, but isn't mindblowing. It features a nice chocolate malt scent that smells bittersweet. There's a hint of roasted malts, as well as a nice coffee presence. The stout elements are pretty well represented. It is a little vinous, and has a light dark fruit scent. Belgian yeast is noted and has an interesting impact on the overall smell. It's positive. Alcohol is blended amazingly well for a 13%+ beer. I'm not getting much at all. Wow!

The flavor keeps things humming along. It has a very sturdy, chocolate malt base. It's bittersweet, and has cocoa and dark chocolate fudge flavors. It's not sweet at all. Coffee is somewhat subtle, but is noted. I like the fact that it's present. Belgian yeast plays nicely with stout flavors and does have a positive impact. It's interesting. Secondary flavors of black licorice, anise, and dark fruit add quality depth. Alcohol is definitely noticeable, but isn't warm or hot. That's astounding. It finishes a little tangy and bittersweet.

XIII has a medium-full body that's nice and smooth. Carbonation is dialed down nicely. I like the feel a lot. Drinkability is also damn high for such a huge, monster stout. This thing drinks like an 8% abv stout, not 13.6%. A bomber of this? No problemo!

There's no question...Weyerbacher XIII is very impressive beer. This bottle's about two years old at this point, and it's held up very well. Perhaps it's even improved a little. I don't know. I'm shocked at how tame it is for such a big beer. The overall flavor is pretty impressive. It's a Belgian-esque stout. If you're into either stouts or Belgian beer, you should try this. I suspect that covers every BA. Find a bottle while you can.

I got this one from Melbatoast93, cheers Hart. ( I also rxd a bottle from czcoh75 as well, so maybe age one??)

Pours mahogany/black with 1 finger of mocha/raspberry colored head. Nice oily sheen to this, along with some head retention & lacing

S: Chocolate, dark fruit, & some oakyness

T: Dark chocolate, oaky, a bit of iron & much dark fruit up front. Winey & plumy notes, along with a touch of licorice, smokeyness & ghost booze. Finishes dry, oaky, plummy, raisiny & with a touch of port

MF: Oily, chewy, with semi-smoothness

Drinks really easy for the ABV & style, despite the overwhelming complexity of this offering, a damn fine Imp Stout

Poured into tullip

Appearance: Pours dark black with a dark brown head that dissipates quickly.

Smell: Faint coffee and maybe a bit of chocolate, malt and/or roasted barley are the main players here.

Taste: There is mostly malt here, maybe some chocolate notes on the back of the tongue but they are pretty subdued. Maybe even some black licorice in there as well. There is a definite alcohol taste in the aftertaste but what would you expect at 13.4%

Mouthfeel: Honestly a bit thinner than I would've thought. Probably in the medium to heavy range. I was expecting a beer that I would need fork and knife to drink.

Drinkability: There is that alcohol taste to let you know not to drink too many of these, but honestly there is nothing else that's really offensive here, I'll go for another.

Notes: When Weyerbacher goes big, which happens often, they rarely go down swinging. While this aint a grand slam, it's definitely at the warning track. A bit of cellering might take the heat off of it, leaving only sweet malty goodness.

Oh really Weyerbacher...an imperial anniversary stout clocking in at 13.6 ABV. Probably really undrinkable right? Wrong. This bad boy was as drinkable as it gets for such a powerful beer. This one really impressed me and left me wanting more bottles...

Poured into a tulip...

A- Really really dark black. Not much lacing, but surely some really nice chocolatey tan head. My eyes are telling me this bad boy is rich, thick, and oily.

S- This is where the roasty quality came through, more so than in the taste. Coffee, roasted malts, some spice.

T- Unexpectedly, this one is VERY sweet. I'm getting a big fruity taste- maybe some berries- oh and cherries too- black cherry. Big burst of vanilla and cream. Roasted flavors lingering as well, but not overwhelming. The belgian yeast is also a phenomenal quality to this beer.

M- As expected, this is one rich beer. Sticky, thick..and yes a BIG warming beer. The alcohol is not too pronouned in the flavor, but man, your throat will surely be on fire.

D- I feel that this is one of Weyerbachers best. Maybe I am biased, I love this brewery, but man. The alcohol is so undetectable in this beer and the tastes are not so cloying. This is a great beer right here...
