Since this beer is a couple years old, and is very high in alcohol, I figured it was time to revisit it, to see if the flavors had calmed down. It comes out completely pitch black, with little heading, just a bit of brown lace. Deep nose of chocolate and dark fruits (plums, cherries etc), with some spice thrown in there as well, very Belgian smelling. The taste is very similar, though no one flavor gets in the way of the other. The chocolate is in check, with the fruit more in the background, and a nice molasses ending. Mouthfeel is thick, very thick. The word that kept coming to mind while drinking this was decadent. Even after two years of aging this brew is still hefty and boozy. Maybe long term aging will tame this beast, but it is still showing the same hotness that it did new. I really liked this one. If you like your stouts with a Belgian twist, look no further, though you might want to share this with a few friends.

Bottle pour at mrbubbler's tasting.
Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and char aromas. Taste is much the same with char, dark fruit, and slight soy sauce flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is fairly drinkable but showing definite age at this point.
