Wasn't going to bother with this brew but I saw a bottle at Jessup Beverage for $6.50, which seemed like a pretty good price, so I said what the hell.

I start by pouring a bit too fast which results in a billowing head that goes spilling over the sides. This one has got some carbonation going on for sure. It ends up yielding a very hazy burnt orange amber color with a massive, dense and creamy beige head. Leaves a mess of stick all over the sides and retains very well.

Smell is full of resiny pine hop aromas as well as lots of grapefruit pith. It's very herbal and earthy like the regular Double Simcoe. Also like the regular version I find it a bit subdued, and wish it were a bigger blast of simcoe in m face.

Taste is also full of herbal, resiny, and citrusy hops. Lots of pine and bitter graperfruit pith, as well as some sweeter citrus flavor. It's quite bitter - more bitter than I recall the regular version being, in fact. There is a biscuity, slightly sweet caramel malt backbone but the hop bitterness dominates.

Mouthfeel is quite creamy and smooth, a medium-full body with a drying finish due to the immense bitterness. The carbonation is very active and prickly. Still quite creamy, however, and very nice on the palate.

This is a very tasty beer but I don't find it to be all that much different than the standard version, except that this bottle is much more highly carbonated. It's also maybe a bit more bitter and not quite as big on the juicy hop flavors. Good stuff, but I think I prefer the standard issue.

Had this filed under the normal Double Simcoe for years, oops.

Poured from corked 750ml which had some serious champagne cork action and probably the most yeast/sediment I've ever seen. Translucent reddish orange with amber edges, billowing cream colored head which fades after many minutes to a one finger meringue-like cap and leaves thick clumps of lace. Smell: pine, pineapple, pink grapefruit, earthiness, fairly raw but not that explosive, big caramel in the back. Taste: pink grapefruit, tangerine, candied citrus rind, earthy pine, medicinal biterness and alcohol at the end of the sip, prevalent caramel sweetness. Mouthfeel: creamy, thick and syrupy, almost chewy. Drinkability, he says with most of a 750 left to go, is good even though it is slightly sweet and slightly rough at the end of the sip. Fantastic looking, at least in the corked bottles, and tasty DIPA. Not my favorite of the style, but it's quite good, impressive use of the simcoe (R).

Reviewed from tasting notes. L: Pours hazy reddish amber under a 2” off-white amber tinted foam collar that produces thick, complex lacing. S: Citrus, grapefruit and pine aromas. T: Tandem attack with rich malt and assertive hops, citrus, grapefruit and pine interweave with caramel, malt and light fruits. F: smooth, rich, creamy full body, medium to medium low carbonation. O: Big, assertive but well done.

A dark and hazy amber bodied brew settles into my goblet. Head is a rocky fluffy biscuit colored tan with excellent retention and scattered lace. ops on the nose are very resin based with some back ground pine and a hint of citrus rind. With first sip the hops are very prickly and have amazing grassy qualities to the flavors. One of the flavors that reach out is the dandelion stem, this is the dominant attribute that really hangs on the tongue. As you drink you get some citrus tones that develop mid palate. While all this is going on you actually get a creamy dry mouthfeel that is very nice. Drinkability is very nice but demands to be savored.

Been wanting to try this one for a very long time. Unfortunately, I feel like the regular version is the one I prefer more so. This one seems muddled; a result of the unfiltered edge of it. The earthy tones that are prevalent in the regular version are definitely here as well. Though they seem more weighed down and not as boisterous and interesting.

Nice to be able to try, but not really as interesting as I was hoping for.
