golden copper or amber color was clearly evident from the first pour.Very cloudy and hazy, but minimal sedimentation, this was truly a fantastic. I was thoroughly pleased with the overall look to this one,

fresh citrus hop aroma. Loads of grapefruit, grass like smells, even a touch of lemon going throughout this. Some apple and pears, and even some peach aromas coming though. Some light grain and yeast Some sour strains becoming apparent as it warmed, bite that was the last possible thing it could have used to make it any better. fresh orange and grapefruit flavors were dominant here, even hints of pineapple and lemon rolling through here as well. Very complex, and yet very light and the same time. Lots of fresh earthy grass like flavors now rolling through and mingling with the grainy cereal like underbelly here

Had this at the brewery the day of its release, a very good dark mahogany brown with a pleasant taste all around. The flavors consisted of wood, dark fruits and some citrus. I was really impressed by the flavor of this beer. The smell was more along the lines of a Quad to me, I felt like that it what it was going to be at first. The mouthfeel was actually quite good one this beer too. It was medium to medium heavy. Overall I just thoroughly enjoyed this beer. I should have picked up a 6 pack but it's too late now. One of Weyerbacher's best in the special releases.

Grabbed this from my notebook from a while back, had on tap @ Armsby Abbey.

Big frothy head, super dark brown color with no opacity, nose has lots of candi sugar and caramel alcohol and wood and touch of raisin, taste starts with candi sugar and burnt brown sugar, it has quite a belgian taste to it, slight alcohol fades as the raisin pokes through, very thick mouthfeel, it finishes with a slight dry bitterness, a sticky and tangy hits the back of the tongue, very like its description of Belgian brown ale, pretty sweet to start but finishes dry, bitter, and a slight tang.

A-Deep copper brown, hazed with a thin off white head that vanishes to nothingness and leaves zero lacing.

S-Sweet biscuit malt and a little spicy zing---but not much going on.

T-Caramel malt up front, followed by nice zippy Belgian yeast spiciness and some earthy hop bitterness in the finish. Touches of raisin like dryness in the finish.

M-Medium bodied fairly sharp with good lingering spicy notes..

D-A touch too sweet for my liking and the aroma is lacking but overall this is a fairly solid brew. Became more interesting with some warming.

On-tap 1/14/2010 at British Beer Company in Walpole, MA, served in a pilsner glass.

A: The beer is a dark reddish brown color, with a short beige head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of Belgian yeast, dark fruit, caramel, dark malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste is well-balanced with sweet flavors of dark fruit, caramel and a little chocolate up front. There's a bready Belgian yeast backbone and a hearty malt character. The hops presence is mild but that's expected for this kind of beer. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and a little crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a decent beer to drink for a while if you're in the mood for the style or just something a little bit different.

Out of a 12 ounce bottle and into my standard shaker glass. Appears a clear chestnut brown color with about two fingers of fluffy tan foam. Nose and flavors consist of caramel malt sweetness, fruits such as raisins, clove, licorice, a bit musty, biscuits, some alcohol and spicy yeast. Nice medium to full body with ample carbonation. Decent overall.

On tap at Mahaffey's in Baltimore. Poured into a traditional pint glass.

Appearance: Lighter brownish in color, good white head on the top of the glass that sticks nicely.

Smell: I keep thinking "Christmas" for some reason. Definitely some malty caramel notes, but there seems to be some possible cinnamon, nutmeg, and a bit of birthday cake almost. That said, there seems to be a bit of muddling and just hints of these, as interesting as their aromas seem to try to get through.

Taste: Caramel, bready malts, and some earthiness. Again, seems like a bit of spice too that I like and compliments it well. A bit of hoppiness to curb the sweetness. This isn't a style I'm super familiar with, but I could definitely have more and be more than fine with that.

Mouthfeel: Prickly and bubbly and medium bodied. Nice.

Drinkability: Not sure if they're making this again or not, but is nuanced, interesting, and complex. I feel like there could be an imperial version of this has the potential to be outstanding. What do you think, Weyerbacher?

A-Pours a caramel brown, fairly opaque with a very thin off white head which does not last long. No Lacing.

S-Sweetness is the main note with some biscuity malt in the background. Not what I would expect of a biere de garde.

T-Surprisingly (after the nose) this tastes pretty good and much closer to the style. The sweetness from the nose does not really carry through to the taste, which is a good thing. Some nice caramel malt at the front, followed by a nice zing of Belgian yeast and some hop bitterness in the finish. Very nice.

M-Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

D-Tasty. A nice interpretation of the style.

Poured from bottle into Smutty Tulip.

A: Dark Brown with a tinge of red in light. Very small head with very low/no lacing.

S: Sweet with a slight bit of alcohol. There is some carmel in there though sweet is the main smell I am gathering.

T: smooth and malty. The taste seems balanced. I was really hoping for some funk or something along those lines though I got none. After going through about 8 oz. it seemed to get flat.

M: Medium bodied and smooth. Again, seemed flatter by the end although carbonation seemed low the entire time.

D: Seemed easy drinking, could have a couple but by the end I was tired of it. May be the fact that I'm used to switching beers instead of having a second of the same style.

First review. I've been drinking craft for years at various levels. I'm very interested in becoming more aware of the profile of the beer and thoughts rather than just liked it or didn't. Also enjoy keeping track of what's been had. Admittedly Biere de Garde is a relatively new style to me. I may have had a few but certainly no expert.

Poured a reddish brown, with a finger of tan head that laced spottily. Smelled like very sweet dark fruit (raisins, dates), some cloves, caramel, herbs, grass, and yeast-funk. The flavor was dominated by sweetness, hinting at the need for more balance. Dry & spicy finish, but again, way too sweet.Maybe aging would help? The mouthfeel was a little thicker than expected for this style, with modest carbonation. I couldn't imagine sessioning this brew.

Thanks to ericwo for sending this one along. Pours a nice deep reddish brown with a thick beige head that dissipates rather quickly. Lots of sweet malt in the nose as well as the taste. Almost reminds me of a quad. Some fruitiness in there as well. Medium body, pretty dry in the finish. A very drinkable, enjoyable beer on this cold and rainy day.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter - fridge - 2009

Appearance: Pours a murky, dark brown color with some brown edges. The head is cream, 1/2" tall and short-lived, with some spotty lace that remains behind.

Smell: Spices, Belgian yeast, caramel malt, strong licorice, anise and clove. Sweet and sugary with a tid bit of hop nose.

Taste: Strong flavor of Belgian farmhouse yeast that is both full of pepper and clove. A hop bitterness wraps this beer up as a balanced brew. Caramel malts resonate throughout the experience. Pepper is a lingering flavor, along with some alcohol.

Mouthfeel: Spicy, medium bodied, sweet and Belgian inspired. The clove sweetness completes the beer, as does a hop bitterness. Fine carbonation.

Drinkability: A lovely interpretation of a saison, the dark malts make for a heartier brew that is best suited for fall. Well crafted.

12 oz bottle, thanks to Beerloco for the extra!

Pours a clear chestnut brown, some reddish highlights, thick off white head forms, drops to a solid lace ring around the glass, lace spirals stick. Smell is neat, sweet and caramelized, barnyard, hay, raisin, dry and biscuity, sugary, nice maltiness, smells nice. Taste is similar, dry biscuit and toast, sweet sugary middle, caramel and honey, lightly smokey sweetness, hay and grass, corn syrup, maybe a bit too sweet. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with medium carbonation. Pretty interesting take on the style, not too bad. Thanks Alan!

A brown clouded body with a light beige head this one was poured at Fathead's...looks great retention and lacing are intricate. Spicy nose with roasted malt and a nice deep fruit complexity going on with dried raisin and prunes kissed with some lively alcohol. Flavor had more spicy yeast complexity with a roasted brown ale like flavor very nice but different from the typical biere de garde more fruits soaked with alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation nothing here was overdone just an enjoyable brew from the folks at Weyerbacher. Drinkability was easy as pie one of those beers that enjoyed with friends and we actually talked about the beer we were drinking, those known beer friends were captivated by this brew.

12 oz bottle from spacecoyote. Thanks man.

Hazy dark amber in the pour, nearly opaque dark brown in the glass. Two fingers of tan head forms and sustains fairly well, slowly settling to a quarter-inch cap. The nose is heavy on the dark fruits; dates, prunes, figs. Yeasty and estery, a bit of toasted malt shows itself but this is very fruity on the whole. A faint mineral aroma comes out as it warms. On the tongue it's surprisingly watery and bland up front, with a bit of cocoa, dried fruit and iron appearing mid-palate. Very sweet, the prune and date flavors are rather cloying to me despite the fairly light body. Chocolate graham cracker finish, lingering and too sweet. This is decent, but not something I'd drink again.

Draft at Spuyten Duyvil. Pours brown with a light tan head. Aroma of sweet malt, coffee/roasted malt, and some yeast. Flavor of slight roasted notes and yeast in the background. Flavor is definitely a bit indistinct. Not bad but definitely bland. Not that I'm an expert on biere de gardes, but this wasn't like any others I've had before (not in a good way though...).
