Nice dark, black color with a thick but short dark tan head. Not much light, if any at all, penetrates the dark complexion. The smell is slightly sweet with a nice wood cabin smell roast malt. The head has nice retention and lacing.
Upon tasting the beer I was extremely surprised that the alcohol was not overpowering or very present at all. I mean, 11.8ABV should pack a punch, but the crafting of this beer was done so exceptionally that it is hidden. The taste has a coffee and plum taste, with some hints of vanilla and caramel. Some slight hints of spices. No surprise, but the beer is thick, not too heavy, but it leaves a nice coating on your palate.
Overall, I really enjoyed this beer. It is very well-balanced and extremely refreshing. It went superb with my chipotle chicken and corn dinner.
