Pours a hazy golden orange with dense carbonation bubbles erupting to form a tight, downy white head.

Bold aroma of sugar, citrus, spice, and yeast.

This beer is more aggressive than I anticipated. The yeast and alcohol presence provide quite a kick similar to the sugar/spice combo that follows with sweet banana and a peppery quality.

This brew is on the higher side of carbonation, nice alcohol bite and a bit dry.

Overall, a good brew, some intense flavor offerings to be experienced and worth a future visit.

A - golden orange, light foamy head, carbonation bubbles

S - Great aroma, floral, nutty, heavy fruits including plums and bananas

T - sweet, banana, plum

M - high carbonation, crisp

O - Really taste Belgian here. Great aroma, sweet and carbonated taste. This is very drinkable and delicious. The taste/smell of bananas and plums is both unique and appealing. One of the better Belgian ales I have had.

Bottled 2/11/14 best by 2/11/16 at 40 degrees into snifter
Aroma of fruit and yeast phenolics
Head white, fizzy, gone when the pour finished
No lacing
Body golden, hazy; sediment in bottle
Flavor of apple, somewhat ciderish, slightly tart, and yeast phenolics; no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate medium, watery, lively carbonation

I think Merry Monks is head and shoulders above Victory Golden Monkey, in general a better flavored brew. It is certainly very drinkable, with the 9.3% abv well hidden so that after quaffing a few you won’t even notice when you’re dragged to your cell. Although the appearance isn’t great (fizzy disappearing head, no lacing), the aroma, flavor, and palate more than make up. I also like the appearance of both the bottled and best by dates – they are blue against the brown bottle and extremely legible, even with a sweating bottle.
