Purchased as a part of a variety case from Weyerbacher.
Having this one from the bottle. As such, apperarance is average.
Aroma is very pungent. Very fruity and floral. Lots going on in the bottle. I should have poured this one is a flute or wine class. Maybe next time.
Taste is a bit confusing. Sweeter than I expected. Tastes like pears, apples, with some darker fruits. Grains are poking in and out. Rosey if sipped. Feels pretty carbonated as expected. I'll give this one a medium to light body. Focusing on the feel, it's lighther than it tastes and smells, given the complex aroma and flavor.
Not craving another, drinkability not so good.
Overall: Glad to see it in the variety pack. Has the "Weyerbacher" distinct characteristics. Wouldn't but a whole case of this stuff.

Bottled 2/11/14 best by 2/11/16 at 40 degrees into snifter
Aroma of fruit and yeast phenolics
Head white, fizzy, gone when the pour finished
Body golden, hazy; sediment in bottle
Flavor of apple, somewhat ciderish, slightly tart, and yeast phenolics; no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate medium, watery, lively carbonation
I think Merry Monks is head and shoulders above Victory Golden Monkey, in general a better flavored brew. It is certainly very drinkable, with the 9.3% abv well hidden so that after quaffing a few you won’t even notice when you’re dragged to your cell. Although the appearance isn’t great (fizzy disappearing head, no lacing), the aroma, flavor, and palate more than make up. I also like the appearance of both the bottled and best by dates – they are blue against the brown bottle and extremely legible, even with a sweating bottle.
