So disappointed in this beer, I was expecting a really great Black IPA from a great Local Brewery. Opened the bottle poured it out so far so good. Then let it settle in for a bit took a big inhale over the glass and thought that this is going to be really great. took the first sip and for some reason the flavor was just not what I expected. The brew had everything going for it just not the flavor.

black with a nice tight and compact head of tan that seems to come up around an inch or so before settling back down to earth and coming through with a nice medium layer of lacing around the sides, fairly impressed. aroma is hops, dark roasted malts, a touch of burnt brown sugar, hints of licorice and a touch of dark fruits as it warms, very complex. flavor follows suit nicely, albeit not as strong, but still very nicely done. rich dark malts and piney hops blend together with a deep roasted flavor that carries over into a moderatly dry finish

12oz bottle from Abe's of Bethlehem poured into

Nice dark chocolate black with huge fluffy pale head. Could stand to be a tad darker. Lacing is phenomenal.

Aroma is pleasant and slightly above average.

Taste is very balanced... could use a little more black in my opinion. Not bad... it actually borderlines ale in my opinion. Buttery flaws indicate a low fermentation temp.

Mouthfeel is decent.

This beer needs a little work however is a very balanced example of a black IPA.

On tap at the Weyerbacher event at Rattle N Hum.

dark brown with a lifeless top. A barely perceptible ring of foam circles the liquid. appears murky. This does not look too appetizing.
However, the first smell reveals a hearty grapefruit hop presence with a little coffee and chocolate. One of the better CDA aromas I've had the pleasure.
It is bitter with some chocolate caramel strafing on the bitter rim. This is followed by waves of citrusy hops. A little on the sweet side, but balanced by the hops very well. Low carbonation hurts this beer, which was otherwise pretty damn good. I'll give it another shot sometime.

I had this on tap at Quick 6 Mt Rose Avenue in York. Served chilled in a pint.

A murky dark brown with thick cream cap of light beige that retains well. The bead is ultra fine and lace sticks decently. The smell is very good with lots of grapefruity citrus from PNW hops, gentle caramel hints and light coffee notes add to the dimension of the American Black ale. The feel is great with the hops in the starring role -sweet and juicy textures overlap and the roast is low with moderate alcohol presence and semi-dry finish which has a low astringency level.

This IPA is and American Black ale as I think the style is best interpreted. The flavor has plenty of ruby red grapefruit and subtle notes of caramel malt with a slight dark sugar tinge, mild toasted flavors that add to the complexity in the malt with slight coffee, but not heavily roasted. The juiciness borders on orange with subtle sweet and tangy and bitterness is moderate in the flavor along with a mild alcohol taste in the semi-dry finish. I enjoyed this a lot, unsure why it is rated so low since to me it fits the style in the best way possible with Hops getting the spotlight. I enjoy how there is not too much roasted malt presence to get in the way of the nice citrusy hops which are utilized so well - the dry finish makes for a drinkable American Black ale - Kudos Weyerbacher!

A - The beer poured a very dark brown...I thought it was black but after holding it up I caught a glimpse of some lighter highlights at the bottom of the glass...a fluffy, tan, two finger head formed and slowly settled into a wispy cap...nice lacing

S - The hops are very forward...they are the first thing you smell after cracking the top...the hops are citrusy sweet...the roasted malt is just an underlying factor in the nose

T - Again, the hops are pretty assertive on the palate with the malt being an underlying factor...a sweet hop flavor kicks things off with a touch of caramel malt backing it up...the middle of the beer is where you get the roasted flavors, especially when it warms up...there is a nice roasted chocolate flavor and roasted malt flavor...the end is a bitter mix between roasted malt and piney hops

M - Medium bodied...there was something off putting about swallowing the beer...it was the taste of a raw but roasted hop cone...it came after the nice bitterness but it ruined that

D - This was a decent Black IPA...the black part of it was very subdued as the IPA characteristics really shined...I like forward to keeping up with Weyerbachers NATO series

A. Pours an impenetrable black with a two finger creamy tan head that leaves lots of residual lacing.

S. Citrus hops and pine hops (although the pine might be the Christmas tree behind me). There is a slight roasted aroma with a touch of caramel.

T. While the flavors are the same as the nose, the hops are more dominant. Assertive citrus with a subdued pine hop presence. The caramel and roasted malt come out mid palate. Bitter citrus peel on swallow.

M. On the thin side of medium with a medium level of carbonation.

D. A great pairing with spicy lamb rogan josh - the roasted malt matches with the lamb while the hop oils help cut through the spiciness.

12 oz bottle poured into a nonic.

Appearance is very stout like. A retentive, finger thick cream colored head sits on a thin black, nearly opaque body with sticky clumps of lacing. Aroma is dark and roasty malts with light grapefruit hops. As the beer warms up the black part of the IPA starts to dominate with a sweet, dry roasty malt flavor dominated with resiny grapefruit hops in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium thick with soft carbonation. Nice flavors for a Black IPA but balance is lacking as the dark and roasted flavors never really mesh with the hop profile.
