6.7% American Wild Red Ale that has undergone 100% of its fermentation and 18 months of aging in pinot noir wine barrels on a collection of micro flora that has created wonderful flavors of berry fruits, oak and a pronounced, yet quite pleasant tartness. The acidity is rounded out with a muted vinous quality, satisfying maltiness and effervescent mouthfeel that is sure to bring you joyful ecstasy.

Sampled from a bottle during the release party at Weyerbacher.

Rapture is a very nice sour red. I wasn't sure what to expect from this beer given the reputation that the '10 Riserva has earned for being a vinegar bomb, but Rapture was delicate, complex and well-balanced. The 18+ months spend on wood really shows through in this beer with a lot of dry vinous and oaky flavors that permeate the nose and the palate of this beer.

The beer is the deep vibrant color of dried blood with a slightly pinkish beige head that leaves good cling. The smell is dominated by the wine and bugs giving it a tart fruity aroma that smells almost like dry fruit punch or lemonade powder (weird description, I know). The beer is woody and wine-like, that has a dry black- and raspberry notes, a little aged tobacco and a gentle sour finish. There was not a lot of brett funk and pedio character, though there is a little leather and earthy must. The beer does have a nice touch of lactic and citric acidity.The beer has a very soft, pleasant mouthfeel with tickling carbonation that coats the mouth.

I think that a fair comparison for this beer is Russian River Supplication, which is also a red/brown ale aged in Pinot Noir barrels. I would be interested to try this side by side because my memory of Supplication is not that great. This beer is definitely fruit forward with only the slightest bit of earthiness. If you told me this was a Flanders Red, I would say this is the best, compared to the best examples of American Wilds, this is very good.

Many thanks to ShanePB for this huge want! Had this in July at GABF when they first opened these bottles. Amazing stuff back then, and have been looking for a bottle since. Poured from C&C bottle into Jester King Farmhouse Ale glass. Pours a cloudy and rich looking amber color. Smell- tart cherries, cherry pie filling, sugary rich tart flavors. Taste- front of the palate a sharp tart sour flavor. It is followed by a cherry pie filling blast, a little bit of that pinot noir grape flavor is in the background. nice carbonation makes for a nice dry finish. This reminds me of a flanders style sour, possibly close to Supplication. Just a really wonderful sour. Would have this again and again if I could.

A: Pours a hazy red/copper/brown color with a small tan head that reduces quickly to a ring around the top. No lacing.

S: Dark cherries, vinegar, and a little bit of caramel. There is definitely some wood coming through and a little bit of vanilla.

T: More dark cherries and a little bit of red grapes with a slight tart green apple flavor as well. There is a little bit of brown sugar and caramel.

M: Light to medium bodied, carbonation is lively. Not overly sour, but overall has a nice tartness. Slightly dry finish.

O: A really nice wild, seems more like a flanders, but it doesn't change the fact that it taste good.

Thanks to capra12 for picking this one up for me. 750ml corked and caged bottle into a Cantillon tulip. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a coarse, 1 finger off-white head that dissipates quickly. Beer is a clear, dark, reddish-purple. Lacing is non-existant. A bit below average for the style due to little head and poor lacing.

Nose is sharp, tart raspberry, vinegar, and sweet red fruit. Moderately robust. Nice.

Opens sweet raspberry and cherry. Vinegary with a nice creaminess. Spicy towards the middle. Brett and wet hay notes. Sweetens even more as it warms with the tartness dropping into the background. Finish is cobwebs and wet hay with a sour vinegar finish. Nice. Flavors are pretty simple but well integrated.

Light to medium bodied with low carbonation. Smooth and silky in the mouth and spicy and puckering going down. Dry finish with a lingering aftertaste. Great feel.

A solid take on the American Wild Ale overall. However, this is much more of a Flanders Oud Bruin in my opinion... a very good one. Would love to sample this one again in a year or so.

Pours a semi-hazed orange with a slight ivory colored head. Looks more like a glass of wine, zero head retention & lacing

S: Raspberries & oakyness

T: Much sourness up front, raspberry, a touch of vinegar & oaky dryness. Puckery dryness, leather, vinegar notes. Finishes puckery & dry, with a bit of sherry & tart cherries

MF: Medium bodied, dry,dry, dry & near zero carbonation

A nice sour, a fairly good jolt to the palet, sour freaks will enjoy this. I was hoping for a bit more diversity in the flavors

Big thanks goes out to the sent me this one in a recent trade (can't remember who it was)! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller taster flute. Poured a slightly hazy dark red with a one finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, tart cherry, wood, vinegar, and a subtle amount of funk. The flavor was of sweet malt, tart cherry, fruit, funk, vinegar, and wood. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. I have to be honest and say that I have been quite impressed with the Wyerbacher Wild Ales I have had and this one was no disappointment. All of the flavors and aromas on this one were spot-on for the style and quite enjoyable. Everything blended quite well together making this one very easy to drink. A definite must try if you get the opportunity.

Pours a medium brown with a fleeting, fizzy head. Settles with a rim of foam.

Red wine/tannins, slight funk, some sour cherry on the nose. I can tell red wine has been involved in this process; aging in pinot noir barrels makes sense.

Taste is where this beer shines, which is a laudable goal for any good beer. Slight but noticeable funk with just a hint of sour. Some cherry, red wine grapes, a hint of sweetness on the back.

Nice fizzy carbonation that works with this style, I believe referred to as "effervescent" in the BA description. Above average carbonation.

Overall I was impressed; perhaps a good intro beer for those not familiar with the "Wild" category. Worth seeking out.

Sampled at the 'Sons of Westy' event at the Blue Dog in Chalfont, PA 11/14/11. Poured from 750ml bottle into small tasting glass.

Pours a deep ruby/red with slight pink highlights - really happy to see this from the barrels. Stoked

Nose is very tart and funky. Sour cherries and a strong vinous character. Balsamic Vinegar came up in conversation. Exactly what I was looking for.

The taste is right what I wanted it to be. Not nearly as tart and sour as the nose led me to believe but I think that will pick up much more with some age. Sour cherries and semisweet vinegar dominate the profile. Really enjoyable.

Overall I was very impressed by this offering from Weyerbacher. I can't wait to revisit this in a year or two and see how it develops.

Appearance. Pours a hazy, deep burnt orange/amber with a finger of amber tinted cream coloured head.

Smell. Cherries and green apples. funky old barrel, lactic sourness and vinegar, and a bit of caramel. Nice.

Taste. Sour cherry, funky brett and dank old wood, apples and melons, and a touch of vinegar and caramel.

Mouthfeel. Fairly light body (maybe a little watery even), medium-low fine carbonation.

Overall. A very nice sour that has everything you could could ask for in the style.

[A] Not much of a head on the pour - less than a quarter finger. Light to medium tan, foamy and quick to fizz out. Retention is short lived and neither a collar or film was ever much of a consideration. The body comes across somewhere in between maroon and burgundy. Very still looking. No lacing.

[S] Intoxicatingly bright fruit aromas. Cherry dominates followed by a nice backing of raspberry, light oak and a mild vinous quality. Fantastic. At its deepest layer, and only at warmer temperatures, a hint of rubber cement pokes through, but it is barely noticeable and hardly interferes with the nose.

[T] Cherry, raspberry, black berry and currants - definitely fruit forward. Ample acidity with great lactic flavor. Whatever yeast strain was used, it was a good choice. This beer is about as quaffable as it gets.

[M] Semi-aggressive mouthfeel with mild sourness, generous acidity and the perfect level of effervescence. Medium-full body.

[O] Honestly, this beer is fantastic and has earned every bit of the high score that it's received. Drinking exceptionally well right now.

Pours a red tinged brown with lots of carbonation, but very little head.

Smells of tannins, oak and a little tartness. If it weren't for the slight sour note, I would be tricked into thinking I'm smelling a dry medium red wine.

Starts off with a little sweet berry flavor. Flavors of the pinot and oak also assert themselves and finishes sublimely tart and dry with some blackberry flavor. A bit of tartness lingers on the tongue.

Very light and refreshing with a lot of carbonation.

I don't always drink beer, and when I don't it's almost always red wine. This is the perfect combo for me of a good wild ale along with the nice dry finish and tannic flavors I love in red wine. One of the best ones of this style I've had.

reddish amber, burnt sienna in color/ cloudy with a small whispy offwhite head that left a light coating on the sides and bottom of the glass.

oak with a light funk are pressing here. Some light spice and as it warms up lots of cherries coming at me now.Cherries from the start, very nice. light oak and woody notes press in mid palate and as it warms a nice touch of spice starts to come through, almost peppery at times. Some light apple vinegar like flavor in the finish as a dry finish fades off.

C&C 750 into a snifer. I thought this one was brewery only but I found a bottle at Capone's for $27(ouch).

Pours a cloudy ruby-brownish color. Some sediment in the glass even on the first pour. The thin and watery white head lasted about a minute.

Cherry, tart dark berries, funky sour notes even a little mild strawberry.

Taste was identical to the nose. I really like the flavor of this one. It has a good amount of tartness and acidity but its not over the top. All the flavors were light and blended together perectly.

Medium body but carbonation is on the lower end of the spectrum.

Much better than Weyerbacher's other wild ale.

750 ml corked and caged bottle, fresh from the brewery on release day. Poured into a tulip glass, served slightly chilled.

A: Murky, dark copper/brown colored body with some visual floaters. A small, bubbly light tan head that settled quickly into nothing except a thin ring around the edges. No lace to speak of, either. It's rather lackluster in looks.

S: Caramel, sweet vinegar, black cherries, caramel apple, leather and hints of oak wood towards the end. It has a very "dark" smelling profile for the style, and is definitely more akin to a sour Red or even Oud Bruin.

T: Bready malts, sweet granny smith apple, dark roasted caramel, and more black cherries. It finishes with a rush of tartness and a very nice acidic sour bite at the end. That puckering quality at the end is really very nice and also brings in some more sweet caramel and subtle dark fruits.

M: Bubbly, light and prickly carbonation all over the palate. It's really exactly what the style should be. The finish is very sour like it's going to be quite dry but it isn't at all. Really well done.

The sour qualities come full circle as this beer warms and is present from the moment it touches your tongue, unlike being slightly chilled. It seems to be more of a cross between a Flanders Red, Flanders Oud Bruin and a Wild Ale. It's very unique and delicious, and certainly one to seek out to try if you can. Another well done "sour" from Weyerbacher.

Appears a hazy red toned amber with a small, off white head that slowly faded into a mild collar and floating cap.
Smell is of cherry pie, rhubarb, grapes, and red wine.
Taste is of the aromas with a tart cherry and vanilla flavors.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, tart, yet balanced with a mildly acidic and sweet tart flavor lingering. Well done!

Pours a cloudy reddish amber with a modest somewhat fizzy head that disappears quickly leaving some spotty lacing

Aromas begin with oaky tannins and a little tartness. Light sour and vinegar notes also begin to assert themselves as it warms more to room temp. But the wine/oak coupled with berries dominate here for me.

The tastes begin with a little sweet berry coupled with some raspberry vinegar. Pinot and oak also assert themselves. As it warms you get more of the tart and dry blackberry flavors. A bit of tartness lingers on the tongue throughout the finish.

The mouthfeel is medium in body, dry with some medium-light carbonation.

Overall I really enjoyed this wild ale, probably more so than many other highly rated ones from the West Coast. Very balanced, not too sour, vinegary, fruity or oaky, just right in all the important flavor areas for this style. Wine barrels really bring out nice berry/cherry vinious qualities which I have come to love in this style. Weyerbacher continues to impress me by branching into a new style (for them) and knocking it out of the park.

3.5 A: Mildly hazed amber plum color. Two fingers of fizzy beige head that falls quickly and leaves no lacing.

4.0 S: Cherry and mixed berry fruitiness to start. Just underneath that there is a savory component that is hard to describe - maybe like a pithy fruitiness, perhaps if berries had peels like oranges. Moderate tartness that seems more fruity tart than sour tart. Dusty type funkiness with old, dry wood, and attic. The faintest of medicinal qualities. Oak and vanilla. Vinous red grapiness to round things out.

3.5 T: Cherry is by far the strongest flavor in the taste. Assorted berries probably come next. Surprisingly more sour than fruity tart, which fooled me in the nose. Only a cursory sourness though. The oak comes through a lot stronger and leaves a hint of tannic astringency. Same type of funk as mentioned in the nose. There's a decent complexity to this, but the flavors run shallow. Additionally, this would benefit greatly from just a hint more acetic acid. It just seems like it's missing something. Still, it's a tasty brew.

3.5 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. The carbonation, while not heavy, is not as spritzy as I'd like. Smooth nonetheless.

3.5 D: Decent effort and worth a try if you can find it, but don't plan on being blown away.

A- Pours a dark copper orange with 1 finger of off white head. Tons of carbonation streaming up from the bottom of the glass but not much retention other than a small ring around the glass.

S- Funk and tart cherries up front with subtle notes from the brett and yeast. Definitely a barrel presence in there of musty oak, vinegar, vinous grapes, and green apple. Smells really nice, everything I like in a Wild Ale.

T- First thing to hit me was a nice lactic funkiness, tart cherries and balsamic vinegar that faded into sweet oak, vinous grapes, and a touch of green apple. Very straight to the point and loaded with a nice array of flavors. Great sour!

M- Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a nice tart/sour finish that makes you want more.

Pours a red-amber color with a good off-white head and a bit of lacing. The nose carries some cherries and oak plus a bit of an acetic character behind the lactic acid. Flavor ramps up the acetic character a bit more; not surprising given what Riserva is normally like. Light-medium body with oak and acetic acid. Not the best sour, though not awful.

First had: 750ml bottle at Weyerbacher, Easton, PA

Named in honor of Harold Camping's continuing failed predictions, this beer is not a failure at all. Pours a chestnut brown mixed with ruby, a bit murky, with a delicate layer of bubbles for a head. Aroma of tart cherries, vinegar, and spicy yeast. Great taste, sour cherries, plums, slight acetic acid notes, woody, with nutty malts in the background, and a touch of yeasty funk. Think East Coast response to Russian River Conscecration. Medium mouthfeel, a bit lip puckering, which was expected. Very good beer, lots of character, and very drinkable. I didn't want to commit myself to a whole case, but I did end up finding a nearby bar that had a single bottle for sale (for a whopping $27).

App- Still not sure how this beer got so damn dark but with this and Monomoy Kriek. Im thinking wine barrels. Was an off dirty brown with a small quick receding head and zero cling.

Smell- A lot of the tannins come through 1st on this one. The fruit and oak come next with a thick and deep earthy floral note.

Taste- A very nice wild ale. Has a great layered flavor with a lot of juicy fruits and then comes the oak and a bit of the pinot tannins on the finish.

Mouth- A light body with a bit of a low-medium carbonation. Needs a bit more bubbles on this one.

Drink- This is a very tasty beer with well rounded flavor and a juicy kick on the end. I was sad that I drank my bottle but then Callmecoon gave me one as a gift.

Big thanks to G311 for the hook-up. The brew pours a rustic and cloudy umber hue, and is capped with a very short-lived head. There is a lot of cherry available in both aroma and flavor, as well as a palpable woody dryness. As it airs out, the fruit suggestions segue from tart cherry to a berry melange. There is a definite red wine complexity, as well as a dark caramel note underlying, not unlike, say, La Folie. The tartness is moderate and fairly varied in nature, with the most discernible being some acetic-balsamic notes on the nose. Slightly petillant, with a good weight for the profile and character of the brew. I enjoyed this one very much. Weyerbacher is the MOST underrated brewery out.

A- Easy head developed, not too much stickiness. The retention time on this one is low, as expected. Very minor body, the coloration is a ruby red with low lacing.

S- Oh soo sweet and so acidic too. We have raspberries with hints of strawberry in front of acetic acid... minor lactic. Strawberries and its seed. Its fruity and acidic all at once. You can't tell if this will rip your face off or not. Very delightful.

T- Flavors are more sweet than tart. Its full fledged strawberry and raspberry middle with a gentle lactic finish. This needs tons of time to get to the stage of lambic or any appreciable sourness Its the VERY beginner sours. Finishes a delightful vine like quality of strawberry and raspberry sweetness with just the hint of anything sour. Its more like a fruit beer than anything else.

M- For what it is, it is perfect. Quickly tart, but finishes dry, woody, sweet. Its like a quick burst of fruit juice... just a hint of too much citrus. Very nice change-up if you are TRYINg to get into sours. Anyone else need not apply. Not bad, but I've loong been acustomed to this style. Please make something stronger!

Undated bottle; pretty sure it's from 2011.

Reddish pour with brown hues. Off-white head of tiny bubbles leaves nice lacing on my glass.

Aroma is fruity, mostly raspberries. Taste follows suit, starting fruity and a little sweet before dirty yeast takes over. Briefly turns earthy/funky, then (surprisingly) bitter. Reminds me of Rosso, but not quite as good.

A decent American sour. We're lucky to have so many well-made sours available these days, and because of that I probably won't be seeking out this one again.
