Drank 11.07.21, bottle from 2012. Drank out of an oversized Hill Farmstead wine glass. Aged beautifully.

I traded for this from a guy associated with Beer Advocate who likely got it from the same festival at the Cyclorama in Boston that I was working at. It was the Belgian Sour Festival, or something like that. I was pouring this and Weyerbacher Riserva and it's these two beers and this festival that turned me on to sour beers in the first place so this beer has a special place in my heart. While I had a preference at the time for the Riserva, I'd always wanted another go at the Sour Black so I finally got my chance.

Look - Poured black with some serious light off purple colored foam that died down eventually and let me get more beer into the glass. No problem there. Possibly translucent but didn't seem to let a lot of light in.

Smell - faintly wild, but not as much as I was expecting. I think I smelled some cherry or black raspberry.

Taste - same as the smell, and just wonderful. Cold out of the fridge it tasted great. Warmed up, equally so. I could have drank it either way. I don't know if this was made with any fruits but it did taste like there were some in there. Definitely not as tart or acidic as I recalled so perhaps that aspect was dialed back during the aging process.

Feel - on the thicker side for a wild, and as the guy before me mentioned, kinda coated your mouth.

Overall - Was so glad to try this again, and would drink it yet again if I could get another bottle. Would love it if Weyerbacher were to do a V2. Cheers!

2011 bottle.

L - Pitch black pour with a reddish tan colored thick layer of foam.

S - Funk, dark roast chocolate, very light cherry, tartness, and very dry on the nose.

T - Tart cherry, chocolate malt, acidic tang, lots of funk and tang.

M - Full medium body with a velvet feel and low carbonation. sticky on the lips, very wet finish.

O - This was "good" when I first bought it in 2011 and now, four years later, it's matured into a very good beer!
