Sunday Morning Stout, 11.3% ABV, is an American Imperial Stout aged in bourbon barrels. The result? A beautiful ebony pour with a large, creamy, off-white head that lasts and lasts. The aromas of roasted coffee and bourbon awaken your senses while their flavors blend with hints of chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla and caramel.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass. Two dates on the bottle looks like bottled on March 27th 2015, good till March 27th 2017.

Pours inky dark walnut brown and nearly black, and completely silent. The snifter takes it easily but without much fanfare. No head creation on a basic snifter stout pour, some faint hint of a really dark mocha mahogany head makes an appearance. Too bad there's no finger of it cause it's really dark it would be nice to see more of it's chocolate like goodness. Settles to a simple tan collar that looks much lighter. Top is virtually non existent except doesn't leave an oil slick at least, and a minor sheen and webbing.

Aroma is very nice, hits at very dark chocolate and fresh ground coffee beans. There's a nice hot spice note coming off this which almost gives off a whiff of hot cinnamon in the back of the throat. A bit boozy but not with much whiskey barrel hinting character, but keeping in step with a great dark chocolate and a sense of thicker mouthfeel to come. Fruity berry notes of grape and cherry peak out as well.

Palate gives some interesting notes. First sip hints at almost fruit forward ester mix which goes nicely, an almost Eclipse Elijah Craig fruit berry note that hits the mid palate nicely. Palate is a little watery but also slight fizzy but manages to give a neutral chance for the flavors to come through, but it would be nice to have some of that thick fudge character. Aftertaste has a bit tannic barrel note, with some good wood and whiskey character. However there's a sharp hop but tolerable bite, and whiskey finish that really hits a boozy feeling in your stomach. Just borderline watery and missing a good deal of depth for a large stout. Coffee angle also seems real buried after awhile with more of the whiskey character dominating. The lighter feel certainly makes for quick drinking, and even a honey coating sweetness on the lips. Chocolate seems a little muted as well and does take a turn for more of a classic roasty porter quality with husky and ripping grain quality.

Where's the vanilla, caramel, butterscotch, thick chocolate and coffee bursts that can come with such a character brew? Nice first effort though from Weyerbacher in the big stout whiskey realm, but it's crowded up here with the big boys and this one doesn't stand out as much as some of the other big guns. (2,381 characters)

Bottle at room temp, obtained today. Bottled on 3/24/15.

I think I got some lame KBS last year, because I was disappointed in its thin feeling, and muted flavors compared to prior iterations. This beer from Weyerbacher tops 2014 KBS in those regards, and it has a thicker mouthfeel: in the medium range for RIS. Analogous to regular Narwhal. Pleasantly viscous without weight. The beer lingers on the tongue without being a palate coating ruffian.

I decidedly prefer this to last years KBS . The coffee is potently sleek, and roasted grain renders cocoa notes. I always yearn for ubiquitous barrel presence, but this is not BCBS grade in that regard. Shadowy puffs of bourbon, vanilla, and oak at the end of sips, while coffee is omnipresent and anonymous ethanol vapors aggressively invade the nasopharyngeal sensory bed. This beer is currently very "hot".

In the realm of "obtainable" BB RIS- this beer is near the head of the class. FAR better than their Heresy!! ( a hobbled excuse for barrel aged beer). It may age well if u like coffee a trifle attenuated. The fusel character should diminish. On the contrary: I'm in the camp that aging KBS is counterproductive.

From the length and depth of this review, one thing should seem obvious: This beer is very very very good. If I didn't drink Black Tuesday, Java Bourbon Eclipse and Parabola with a modicum of regularity: I would call Sunday Morning Stout fantastic. Considering the resultant drain on the bank account by the aforementioned exemplars, it's probably better to stick with this Weyerbacher triumph.

Ps: If u haven't noticed, I often end my reviews with suggesting beers in the same vein. If you like coffee bourbon stouts: do not forget Big Bad Baptist. It's quite like this with more barrel and espresso dominant flavors. Not better, just different (1,837 characters)

12oz bottle poured into a tulip. The brew is black in color with a dark brown head that fades slow leaving stringy lace. Some brown clarity seen around the edges.

The nose is coffee forward with roasty grain like chocolate and earth. Some oakiness imparts faint caramel and vanilla. The aroma is easily the best part of this brew.

The taste is roasty with earthy bitterness, slight coffee and mild green yeastiness and minerals. It has a lot of neutral oak flavors, solvent booze and not really all much bourbon character. The more I taste this, it almost feels like cedar instead of oak...as weird as that sounds.

This is medium bodied and modestly carbonated. Initially has a lot of wow factor but as the experience continues it kinda falls apart. The initial strong coffee tapers off, the barrel doesnt have nuance and lacks finesse. Instead, its straight raw wood without all the pleasantries. Despite my gripes about this beer, its still pretty good. (958 characters)

The look was a slight disappointment as it seemed to have very little head with a short stay.

Smell was great all I could smell was a fistful of coffee with a very light wood smell in the background.

Taste: It's like 2 different drinks at the same time. With the sip you get strong coffee then it's like you chased it with a shot of bourbon.

I thought the feel changed drastically during the drinking of this beer. As it warmed it got a much stronger bourbon taste then at a point went right back to perfectly smooth and balanced.

Overall: Exceptional beer with a spectacular price point of $11 for a 4 pack! (614 characters)

Very coffee forward. Bourbon is warm and gets hotter as the glass sits. Nothing subtle about this beer. Every character flavor knows it's roll and plays it well. Well done Weyerbacher. (184 characters)

Once I found out about this beer, I could not wait until I tried it. I luckily stopped in at the package store I work at and they had some 4Packs.
Picked up some and aging 3 while tasting one right now.

Typical jet black full stout. Off color dirty beige head that stays for a while.
The aroma is COFFEE, Black strong Italian Espresso Cafe to be exact!

The taste was big and very bold. Bigger than some of the other coffee stouts I have tasted. The coffee flavor comes through right from the start, but then the alcohol slowly starts to take over. I would have rated this probably a 5 across the board, but it was because of the alcohol, that I took it down a notch. The alcohol burn to me wasn't as balance with the coffee. So, what started out as espresso, became alcohol and then finished an alcoholic coffee! (822 characters)

Poured from a bottle dated 3/24/15 and enjoyed on 4/5/15. The beer pours out inky black with a rocky mocha-colored head that is fairly well-sustained for such a high abv beer. Lots of rich coffee notes on the nose. No bitter, acidic coffee, just rich coffee with hints of chocolate, toasted oak, and a little bourbon. Smells awesome!

Full body with a rich flavor and a silky smooth feel. Plenty of roasted malt, toffee, chocolate, and caramel flavors up front, then loads and loads of rich intense coffee notes and Asbach Uralt brandy-filled dark chocolates. The flavors are smooth, creamy, and very satisfying. No bitterness at all. Very, very reminiscent of KBS, except at mid-palate where the bourbon notes creep in. Where they simply enrich the flavor of that other beer, here the bourbon is noticeably more assertive and heats things up more, enhancing the dessert-like qualities of the beer. The beer finishes with coffee, dark chocolate, and bourbon.

Long story short, this beer drinks like KBS - it disappears far too quickly! It also tastes like KBS, except it has more of an assertive bourbon-like presence. As rich "coffee-forward" beers go for me, this stuff is right up there with KBS and Big Bad Baptist (and just below BCBCS). Weyerbacher has a real winner on their hands here. I hope they keep making this stuff. It is wonderful. Congratulations Weyerbacher! (1,377 characters)

This came out of nowhere and apparently is really friggen good. Most people seem surprised, but I have been a fan of a lot of the BA beers from Weyerbacher. Original Blasphemy was phenomenal, and Insanity is great, etc. So now to try the new one.

Bottled 3/24/15, best by 3/24/17, so much for aging them.

Pours thick as motor oil, and darker than satan's butthole, with a chocolate black fizzy slight creamy small head that fades fairly quickly, little lacing, but looooooong thick legs on the sides like bourbon level legs. No light getting through this beast.

Nose is wow... great fresh coffee cuts through the heavy stout, a great coffee, nutty little earthy, quite nutty actually, with a soft complexion maybe cold extraction, not tannic so far, a nutty fudgey stout, dark chocolate cocoa, plenty of caramel and fudge, barrel brings a nice vanilla and mild coconut even, just a touch of bourbon as well.

Taste continues where the nose left off, lots of fresh coffee with nice stout malts and barrel notes. Somehow the barrel cuts through the big heavy malts, with mild coconut again, nice vanilla and toasted oak, just a touch of bourbon which I wish was a little stronger. Malts bring nice fudgey cocoa, a little nutty, plenty of caramel and sweet characters but not super sweet, and some mild fluffy nougat. Nice dark chocolate, heavy thick melting dark chocolate. Tons of coffee though, a little bitterness from the roasted malts and a bit from the coffee it seems, a nutty earthy coffee again, without tannic bitterness so probably cold extracted or at least well done infusion. Thick creamy nougat base, and some oats I think. Just a touch of booze, a bit more on the finish with a touch of booze flavor and warmth, attempts to dry but stays quite sticky and a little sweet, fluffy nougat lingering, with more nutty earthy coffee and fudgey cocoa lingering nicely.

Mouth is full bod, thick, lush, creamy, etc, just a touch of warming booze, nice carb.

Overall really nice beer, great stout base, heavy thick fluffy and quite tasty, great coffee infusion with nice nutty earthy coffee and no tannic bitterness, nice barrel notes, the barrel itself is decent but wish the bourbon was a bit more. Still quite enjoyable, not sure how well it will age as it seems to be at its peak now. (2,296 characters)

Poured from a bottle into a snifter, the beer pours a thick, jet black coloring with a dense, low profile, chocolate colored head that settles out into a clingy surface coating. Aromas of bittersweet chocolate blending with heavy roasted coffee notes. It's like someone melted chocolate in some freshly used coffee grounds. Wow, this smells insanely fresh and robust. Flavors are heavy on the roast and bitter coffee notes forward, followed immediately by the booze kick providing warmth and an edge. Bittersweet chocolate highlights throughout, with some earthy and vanilla characteristics chiming in as well. Woody and bourbon notes smooth out the edges. This is a layered, meaty epic. The body is full, big, and chewy, with a velvety smooth finish that carries a lingering bittersweet blend of chocolate, creamy vanilla, coffee, and a building booze warmth. Did a blind taste with THE KBS and heavily preferred this. When I tasted the brew which had the thin aftertaste, I figured it would have to be this one. To my chagrin it was KBS. Very well done here (198 characters)

So close to BCCS besides the mouthfeel. Smells and taste wonderful.

Smell is vanilla, oak and bourbon and taste is harsh, mega blended booze like it's Goose Island predecessor. (177 characters)

2015 Bottle poured into my tulip glass.
Like all big BA stouts, let this brew warm up for 20-25 minutes out of fridge.
Nicely oily black appearance.
Strong bourbon/vanilla/oaky smell from the first pour into my glass. Bourbon smell reminiscent of BCBS.
Taste: very much subdued but noticeable coffee/vanilla/bourbon nicely integrated with a very good Imperial Stout base beer.
Overall: A very enjoyable beer. A great alternative to the almost-impossible-to-find BCBCS. And much better value at $14.99 for a 4-pack. Glad I bought a half-case to enjoy through the year. Get it while you can!

Update: I bought another half-case to make it one full case. Too good not to buy while it's around! (691 characters)

Poured into a tulip glass this stout has a nice chocolate brown billowy foam head with a pitch black body. Smell is of bourbon, oak, dried fruit, cherry, coffee, and chocolate. Taste is of bourbon, some nice oak notes, cherry, minor vanilla notes at end. Lots and lots of chocolate with some coffee bitterness but a balanced sweetness. A good amount of warmth that is a tad bit too much. The overall mouth feel when fridge temp is a bit less rich then expected with the warmth making up for it somewhat but not as much of a thick viscous stout as I was expecting, when it warms it gets creamier though and the coffee pulls through more. Coffee is nice and aromatic and gives lots of dried fruit notes to this beer, and the oak and bourbon harbor it more complexity. (766 characters)

L: impenetrably-black liquid, mocha-hued foam... a bit of lacing, despite the foam all but disappearing

S: freshly-opened pack of expertly-roasted coffee beans, chocolate malt husks... perhaps a wee nip of alcohol... if you adore coffee, this will knock your socks off with its intensity and clarity

T: coffee coffee coffee, with wood on the edges, and a bit of bitter dark chocolate in the back... just enough of a malt backbone... phenolic (nail polish) whoosh at the end, mingles with the coffee beans in the aftertaste... not getting much of the bourbon barrel character

F: there is a whisper of velvety flow up front, but the booze quickly flattens it... faint gritty ghost left over... mild-moderate acidic twinge lingers

O: the coffee element is great, but it may just render this beer rather 2D... not much depth in this edition... typical overly-boozy Weyerbacher fare that can definitely be tweaked for the better... I would leave this sitting for at least 1.5 years before consuming - not that it'll get that much better - who knows?... (1,082 characters)

Sunday Morning Stout enjoyed on a Sunday Morning -reviewed today. Poured chilled in a stout glass from the 12oz.

The color is black opaque with quick dropping medium brown head with fine bead that sticks in spots. The smell has strong coffee in the aroma with sweet dark malt which brings a sort of cocoa quality to the nose with mild bourbon as it warms. The feel is heavy woody and boozy boubon with medium carbonation and light creamy texture mid palate with mild sweetness and warming alcohol in the dry finish.

The taste is very good with a nice coffee flavor up front with mild bourbon and slight cocoa-like flavor from the malt with a woody barrel-quality that is not shy in the mix with pretty intense bourbon in the flavor which overtakes the coffee in taste easily. The taste has mild alcohol which increases as it warms with heat in the back end and light vanilla from the barrel's caramlized sugar flavor with nutty toasted quality. Overall I liked this - very good coffee/barrel aged stout with a little warmth fresh could be a good candidate for cellaring but the coffee aroma is great fresh - this has a split personality with the bourbon dominating the taste while coffee is more aroma intensive. I consider this well worth the price of admission -I am using some in a strip steak marinade. (1,309 characters)

12oz bottled 3/27/2015. Served in a snifter 4/10/2015.

A- Darker brown body, one finger mocha head, nice retention. Lots of splotchy lacing. Nice thick brown collar, moderate thickness filminess even 10 minutes later.

S- Rich chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, dark chocolate, bourbon. There is a definite bourbon aroma in the background mixed in with the chocolate-forward aromas. Excellent.

F- Chocolate, caramel, vanilla and oak, roasted malt, bourbon. Wow, this is a nice complex beer with a lot of flavour that isn't overwhelming in any one way. Good integration, well-crafted .

M- Full-medium bodied, nice carbonation, both slightly slick and dry but for the most part smooth, mild booze but not overwhelmingly boozy at all. Not difficult to drink. Finish is mostly milk chocolate and bourbon.

O- Excellent BA coffee stout that seems to be a bit underrated just because it's Weyerbacher. Highly advise you to go out and get some, because it'll be gone quickly. It's legitimately good. (994 characters)

12 oz bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a pitch black color. The head is a finger high and tan in shade. I love it when stouts are this damn dark, have I ever said that before? Even better, the head retention is quite good, leaving behind good amounts of lacing. (4.25)

Smell: Black coffee - just loads and loads of black coffee, backed by a roasty backbone of malts. The bourbon is very subtle, but definitely there, coexisting in perfect harmony with the coffee. I'm also getting supplementary notes of graham cracker, nuts, and dark chocolate. It really smells wonderful, just like I half-expected. (4.25)

Taste: Black coffee hits the palate first. Afterwards, the coffee flavors transition into subtle bourbon characteristics. Then, those aforementioned bourbon characteristics are replaced with dark chocolate, vanilla, and graham cracker. It brings everything I like in a good barrel-aged coffee stout in a balanced fashion. But the best part: IT'S DELICATE. Even better, it's delicate without being muddled or lacking in flavor definition (oh hai, KBS!) Absolutely wonderful. (4.5)

Mouthfeel: Like any good stout, it starts off with a velvety feel, only to dry out nicely after the swallow. Granted, it still has a lingering sweetness on the palate, but this drinks really well for 11.3%. Carbonation is expectedly low. (4.25)

Overall: Founders, I love you like a god, but this beer is simply better than KBS. The flavors are richer AND more defined, yet everything still retains a nice balance, along with decent drinkability (for the style). Easily the best beer Weyerbacher ever made, and one I'll be seeking out again and again. (4.25)

Too much bourbon heat. The bourbon overpowers the coffee. Also a bit too much carbonation tingle on the tongue. Some aging will do this quite well. A little mellower and this would live up to the hype. (204 characters)

This is KBS, without the hype, but with a better coffee, and vanilla flavor. The bourbon is subdued, but wakes up when the beer warms. If the carbonation level was a touch lower, this would be a contender for stout of the year. IMHO. (233 characters)

12 oz bottle poured into snifter.

Appearance: Pours a deep dark black with a dark mocha colored head similar to that of a KBS or a BCBS variety. Much thinner than the KBS, closer to the BCBS in that regard.

Smell: Coffee galore. Chocolate notes as well, but I really don't smell any bourbon.

Taste: Ok, THERE'S the bourbon. It's subtle and well-blended with the coffee and chocolate. Those who compare it to KCS and BCBS weren't kidding. This is honestly the biggest surprise I've had from a beer in a LONG time. So very happy taste-wise.

Mouthfeel: Definitely thinner than KBS, probably closer to a BCBS.

Overall: I'd say this comes pretty close to BCBS; it's more... sophisticated... than KBS. Just... wow. (725 characters)
