First chance to try a black IPA. Had it out of a growler fresh from Finn's.

The appearance was certainly in line with something I'd expect from a stout. Deep brown almost black, with a creamy off white head. The smell is where you start to see you're definitely not dealing with a stout. First catch piney and citrusy hops, but backed up by a bit of sweetness and roastiness. Up front the flavor was very much on the darker side, sweet, roasty, a little bit of coffee/chocolate bitterness. Then you get the IPA bitterness popping up, citrusy and pungent. A nice combination of very much opposite flavor profiles, but balanced well and enjoyable. Mouthfeel was great for the style, a little thicker feeling in the mouth than my favorite IPAs, with a smoother, almost creamy level of carbination. Very enjoyable for my first foray into the style, and I'm looking forward to trying more.

Served in a shaker pint glass at the brewpub.

One of my favorite Stones songs, now in beer form! Get some, right? It pours a dark sunset garnet-brown topped by a finger of dirty ecru foam. The nose comprises grapefruit, very light roasted malts, pineapple, very light leek, and light chocolate powder. The taste holds notes of light roasted malts, grapefruit, pine, orange zest, light lemon zest, light caramel, and dark greens. The body straddles the border between heavy light and light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a chunky-watery feel. Overall, a solid black ale, a bit on the thin side, but really enjoyable. Good to see Finn's trying out a new style and succeeding pretty nicely.

A: Appearance is black color with light, beige head.

S: Aroma is heavy in citrus flavors with slight roasty sweetness.

T: Taste is a good balance of roasted malts with the edge of orange and grapefruit hop bitterness.

M: Palate is medium-bodied, very smooth texture, average carbonation, and a mild bitter finish.

O: This one was a quality beer and a good introduction to a growing style.

A: dark brownish black body, finger head, great lacing

S: pineapple, peach, pine, roasted malt

T: slight sweet pineapple/peach, firm roasted malt, slight oily bitter finish

M: med/light body, hint of sticky, semi-dry

O: Very nice new brew. Enough flavor for
a sipper or newbie, but semi-sessionable for
a seasoned beer nerd. I hope this is not
a one time only beer.
