sampled as part of 'heavyweight night' at moan and dove
chuck yeah!
appearance: dark crimson. carbonated and inviting. what an oud bruin should look like, which gets it at least 4 points in my book.
aroma: the real winner here. that sour cherryness that we all long for from this style is here. mixes with leather and sex sweat. wood and vanilla round out a spectacular bouquet for the nostrils.
taste: light. musty. sour and fruity with a thin, bitter aftertaste. really short on complexity though- not much to it. very one-dimensional (agreed upon by the brewer). uses same ingredients of carolus but stops short of greatness. the best way to look at it is an easy way to drink alot of bruin without taste overload or a stomach ache. good in its own way but not great for the style.

Pop the top on this and "BOOM - WHAP" your nose is struck by a strong sour-cherry "sweaty saddle" aroma that wafts out as you pour it in the glass. Considering how damaged my sense of smell is, this must be even more powerful to everyone else.
A translucent red amber with a thick long-lasting frothy head, with a light and somewhat salty sour cherry-dominant fruit flavor, very, very, very dry mouthfeel. Not the most flavorful of beers though, and has to be the least malty of all the Heavyweights. Still a pretty wacky experiment, I'm gonna let the other bottle sit a bit and see what happens...

Purchased this bottle at one of Heavyweight's infamous open houses, and have been sitting on it for a few months. This is indeed "artisinal" given the aroma of this amber hued-brew. Smells like a funky lambic; all the sour, musty, fruity notes are there. There is some sourness in the flavor as well, at the outset, which melds with the light caramel maltiness in the finish. Has a bitter sweetness in the finish as well, reminiscent of dark chocolate. This feels like a cross between a geuze and a brown ale. Dry (there's the lambic quality) and somewhat effervescent. Another highly unique, interesting beer from Tom Baker. An effort worth applauding.

Hazed redwood with an initially crater-filled, pock-marked head of steamed milk foam. An increasingly crazy brettanomyces aroma -- quite funky. As it warms, the nose intensifies and diversifies, yielding crispy chocolate chip cookies, baked mushrooms soaked in madiera, and a mashed compost heap in its earliest stages, before its gross -- when it's simply raw.
Exceptionally dry brew. Starts thin and with little flavor but develops a brief lemon peel flavor and brett swagger that parlays itself into a big, dull, farmhouse ale, plant-like bitterness that sucks every ounce of moisture from the mouth. Dry as a bone -- but delicious. This really settles out quickly from a big, frothy, carbonated mouth fizzer to an almost flat, thinner beer. Out of 4 glasses I poured for myself, the 2nd and 3rd were best. (I don't know what that means; but I'll say this: I liked the beer.)
