The beer has a nice hazy deep copper color. A thin head that retains a bit. There is a nicely subdued malt aroma laced with subtle smoke nuances. Really nice taste. A little bit syrupy, but it fits nicely with this brew. Nicely integrated smoke taste. Great full maltiness on the palate. Little to no hop taste. Body is medium to full. No sign of alcohol in this 7% a/v beer. Very easy drinking. A very solid brew.

I had the pleasure of drinking this with Tom Baker, master brewer and co-owner of Heavyweight Brewing Co., at Iron Hill Brewery's Brewers' Reserve Night in West Chester, PA. He was originally going for a double bock, but ended up with this incredible brew. Cloudy copper appearance, white foamy head. Smells like mesquite from the imported German smoked malts. Incredibly smooth, clean lager taste, with a heavy smoked malt accent. Lingering smokiness in the finish. This is a damn fine (and smoky) beer!

The newest release from this great small brewery is a smoked amber bock. Had a chance to sample it on tap recently (although it's now availiable in 4-paks) at the breweries' recent open house, and it's a killer! Lovers of smoked beer will rejoice at this one, a great smoky/sweet malty nose sets the stage for what's to come...lots of smoke, though not as powerful as say Schlenkerla Rauchbier, with substantial body from the malts bringing up the rear with a nice but subtle hoppiness that blends with a long smoky finish. Those in the NJ/NY/PA area should seek it out.
