Citrus, floral aroma and taste. Lower on the bitterness scale for an ale (~50 IBU). Taste has a bit of bready nature to it. An ale that can serve as either a dinner or a party option, with its lighter tones and texture. As a small, Pennsylvania brewery, Stoudts really holds it's own here.

(on tap at Pete's Famous Pizza)

A: surprisingly fantastic pour in a cold pint.... solid, rocky, cottony head - color of recycled egg crate paper... clear, golden liquid... lace left in broad bands, ample cover

S: balance of toasty, cereal-y malts and hop pellets.... mellow... unmistakable, straight-up APA

T: up front - nice, smooth, lightly-spicy hops... light-medium bitterness.... firm malt follow-through after each sip... malt a bit obscured in the background.... mild, mid-range crystal malt sweetness, but very naked flavor from it - like chewing on the grains

M: ideal lighter body and dry finish for the style... bit of a frothy wash from the foam

O: quintessential APA... quite well done... something to seek out in the summer

Serving type: on-tap

12oz. bottle poured into pint glass.

A: Gorgeous amber with a nice tint of orange. Generous amount of bubbles rise to the top to support a creamy 1/8" head, unpure white in color. A few splotches of sticky lace as the beer slowly departs from the glass.

S: A little disappointing here... Hops make themselves known; grapefruit and orange citrus zest with a little bit of earthy pine and grass. While the expected aroma is present, it's a bit weak and comes off a little too clean in the nose.

T: Flavors start out nice. A bit on the bready side, with a slight jolt of hops. A bit herbal in the finish with an aftertaste I can't quite put my finger on, and the mystery isn't really a good thing. The malt backbone is gone, the bitterness from the hops dissipates, and you're left with a really sour fruit-like flavor. I can't quite discern it, but I know it's not really hitting the spot.

M: Body sits comfortable in the middle—not too light, not too heavy. Crisp carbonation. Rolls across the palate smoothly and finishes semi-dry. Commendable.

O: With Stoudt's being a PA brewery and having heard good things about their American Pale Ale, I decided to grab a bottle. It poured nice, but I was immediately underwhelmed by its clean aroma, and even less impressed with its funky, sour finish. At first I thought it was a freshness problem. The place I frequent for beer purchases usually doesn't leave stale brew on display, but I was almost certain I found something that had been marinating for too long. Lo and behold, the label clearly states that I still have about three months to enjoy this beverage. I don't really know what's going on here and, while it's not offensive, it definitely led to a less-than-pleasant experience. Perhaps the sourness is a fluke. The rest of it was decent and I'll be re-visiting this again, for sure. Some things deserve a second chance.
