Appearance - Deep translucent red/auburn (I see why it is called scarlet lady). Moderate frothy head with a big ring of lace clinging to the side.
Smell - The strong hop aroma typical of an ESB overpowers anything that might be underneath.
Taste - Not as bitter as I expected. The hop aromas are more prominent than the flavor. A subtle sweet hoppy taste initially that quickly changes to a moderate and pleasant bitterness. A malty character appears to round it out. Not bad. Nothing extravagant and devoid of anything repulsive.
Mouthfeel - Medium viscosity, frothy, not very drying for a bitter beer. Actually quite refreshing.
Drinkability - Very good. Unlike many ESBs I've had in the past, this one is not oppressively bitter, which makes the prospect of a second a reality as opposed to a hopeful fantasy.
