12oz. bottle poured into a tumbler glass

A- A dark copper brew with a light tan head, and very good lacing.

S- Some solid biscuity malt notes, with some herbal English hops. Slight caramel note.

T- Not as rich as something like Fullers ESB, but a nice mix of caramel, biscuity malt, and a light herbal english hop note. A very nice intro to the style.

M- Medium bodied, and medium carbonation.

O- Very sessionable, and pleasant intro to the style. Far too few ESB's out there, but a nice change up from the hop bombs.

Amber in color with a fingernail of tan head rests on top. Heavy lacing is present. The aroma is of amber malt with a lightly copper note and delicate earthy German bittering hops. The taste is a subtle, yet the amber malt is the dominant player. The grassy German hops and noticeable in the back of the palate. The mouth has a smooth profile with a light creaminess.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

L: Pours a clear deep copper color with thin tannish head. Surprisingly good lacing.

S: Biscuits and fresh cut grass on the nose.

T/F: Malts and grains form the backbone, but there is some hops for balance. Not a hoppy beer per se, but it definitely cleans up the brew and prevents it from being too sweet. Slightly herbal. Sharp carbonation and a bit sticky on the mouthfeel. Finish is dry, not unpleasant.

O: A fairly easy drinking ESB, great for a session but not one that will blow you away. One I will probably revisit.

Great ESB. Still learning how to describe things - malty? Caramel? Just a well done, consistent ESB and different from any other local offering. Stoudts does a great job crafting distinct flavors across their offerings.

This is a perfectly mediocre U.S. ESB from a solid Pennsylvania craft brewer. I was expecting more flavor, given Stoudts resume. Would drink on draft again, but probably wouldn't buy a sixer of it.

Dark reddish-copper color with a healthy head that is over a finger in height. The overwhelming flavor is an odd sweet note. The finish is slightly bitter.

Nice clear amber color with 1/2" creamy head and lingering lace. Creamy carbonation, not a ton of flavor, some hops at the finish. I could drink more.

Best by (no date) bottle at 40 degrees into snifter
Aroma of malt
Head small (2 cm), off white, frothy, diminishing to 2 mm ring and broken layer
Lacing poor – few tiny island of tiny bubbles
Body medium amber, chill haze
Flavor malty with a trace of diacetyl, slightly sweet, ends with slight hop bitterness; no alcohol
Palate medium, creamy, soft carbonation

Appearance 4, Aroma 4, Flavor 4.5, Palate 4.5, Overall 4.25.
A very pleasing ESB which hits all the characteristics. Don’t know if this ever won any GABF awards but it should.

12oz bottle into a tulip. BB 7/24/14

Pours a dark amber with a nice inch and a half thick white head. Smell is quite malty...reminds me of a typical amber ale honestly. Taste though is much more like an ESB. Very drinkable but just not that much flavor. extreme amount of maltiness. finishes dry with not much bitterness at all. its decent. mild body with mild carbonation.

overall a drinkable beer but nothing to rave about. bit too bland.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a hand glass.

A: Amber hue. Pours a 1 finger, foamy, white head. Settles very slowly. Medium, beer ring lacing.

S: Nuts, caramel, fresh tea leaf.

T: Lightly malty. White bread, with a slight hop. Lightly bitter, with a slight indistinct sweetness.

M: Light body. A bit of a shallow feel. Lightly bitter bland aftertaste remains.

D: Session.

Atmosphere is pretty good. Persistent foamy head, and some nice lacing. Nose is nutty and buttery with some tea leaf. Light and bready with a slightly bitter hop, balanced with a slight sweetness. A little shallow and bland. Overall, this is a pretty good quaff.

This brew pours a brown/red color with a two finger head and moderate lacing. Low carbonation.

The smell is thick, bready and slightly soapy. Slightly astringent.

The taste follows the nose with bready malts up front then a soapy taste then some crisp, not terribly bitter hops come in on the end. There is a dry taste left in the mouth after swallowing.

The mouthfeel is chewy and filling, surprisingly good.

Overall this is a very sessionable ESB. Malty and not terribly better. I would have given it higher marks for a more fruity or nutty taste than for the soapy taste in the middle.

Appearance: amber with reddish and gold highlights, thick, fluffy off white head, great clarity

Aroma: caramel, bready, some earthy hop notes, slight floral character as well

Taste: less flavorful than I had hoped for, and certainly less malt character than true English ESBs. Some malty, caramel character that finishes bitter with some earthy and floral hop character.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, medium carbonation. This would be better if it was less carbonated like English cask ales

Overall: Not bad but I don't know if I would get this again. Caramel and bready malt character with earthy and floral hop character. A good start for any beer but this just seems to be somewhat poorly executed.

Poured from a chilled 12 oz. bottle.

Appearance: Brown, no aeration, half a finger of head that disappeared very quickly. No aeration.

Aroma: Sweet, malty aroma. A lot of mango and a little bit of peach. Gorgeous aroma. Loved it!

Taste: Malty, some hops. Despite the mango/peach and sweet aroma, no sweetness in the beer and no fruitiness. If you love the smell of fruit but don't necessarily like to taste it in your beer, this is the perfect beer for you. No complex flavors here.

Mouthfeel: Held the taste for a while, nothing significant to report.

Overall: A straight and narrow ale. Despite the "ESB" moniker, this beer is not bitter at all. Malty taste with a little bit of hops towards the end. Fruity aromas don't make their way into the taste of the beer.

I consider this a wonderful session brew, worthy of more than one. Chestnut brown-orange in color, faint nose in the std. pint glass. Nice sweet malt with hops bringing up the rear. Not many brewers do the ESB-style & this is a fine example. Worthy of your time.

This beer poured from a 50 degree F bottle into a standard pint glass produced a clear amber/ copper beer with a nice bone white one finger head that stays as a nice frothy cap the entire drink and leaves a shark tooth lacing pattern on the glass that falls back down to the head. Pretty cool!

Initially I smelled mostly caramel malts with a little breadiness to it, but as it got warmer some earthy notes as well as dark fruit notes came out.

As I get further into the beer flavours of sour apple, bread, caramel malts are pretty evenly distributed followed by some earthy hops and a bit of tannins and mild black pepper.

The mouthfeel is mildly sweet, moderately light, and has a dry finish. A bit of a slippery feel is left on the tongue and the carbonation is about medium and maybe just a tad, just a tad, bit lively. I like it a lot and think that I can drink the heck out of this beer!

Overall, I like this beer a lot. I think it fits into the style very well and would recommend trying it to anyone who likes English beers. The only thing that detracts from this beer for me is the tannin taste and it's not over the top at all so I am going to give this beer a solid 4 out of 5!

Stoudt’s Scarlet Lady ESB has a thin, off-white head, some sheen of lacing left on the glass, and a brilliant, bubbly, off-white head. The aroma is of brown bread crust and dank fruit. Taste is of brown bread crust, some sugar, a little bitterness, and tannin. The mouthfeel is light to medium, and Stoudt’s Scarlet Lady ESB finishes dry, refreshing, and highly drinkable. The tannin aspect holds it back a bit, but it’s still very good and worth checking out.

12 ounce bottle. Served in a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass, the beer pours a slightly hazy reddish/amber color with a half inch off-white head that stayed around for a little while. There's also a good amount of lacing. The brew smells like tart apples, herbal/floral hops and some caramel malt. It tastes like herbal/floral hops, toasted and bready malt, tart apples, and some nuts and tea. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick with moderate carbonation. I think it's a solid beer, it's definitely worth a try.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Clear amber with two-finger, off-white, frothy head that lasted several minutes. Pretty good lacing.

S: Sour apple. Mild.

T: Light sweetness and light bitterness. Toasted malt and slight tang. Not much sweetness or hop bitterness to speak of. Kind of plain.

M: Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Slightly dry.

O: Average ESB.

A- scarlet lady pours a copper body with a frothy head of foam that quickly recides

S- faint dry apple scent that is bundled with a buttered scent as well. Even a little herbal component

T- very bitter and sweet flavor simultaneously. There is a fruity component that really fits in well with the sour apple taste

M- thin but carbonated with flavor

O- very bitter brew from stoudts that is drinkable

A - dark amber with some ruby edges; there is a nice, soft, off white head that leaves a thin lacing

S - juicy dark fruit, faint baked apple, caramel

T - caramel, fruit, bitter, earthy, faintly medicinal

M - medium bodied, crisp, a tad overcarbonated

This a decent ESB, but it has a few off notes. The medicinal underpinnings I'm not fond of. It's also a bit more bitter than I would have liked. I did the big fruity notes provided by the yeast and I thought it had a decent grain bill. If you're a fan of the style, then you definitely have to check it out.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 9/28/2012. Pours lightly hazy orange copper color with a nice 1-2 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some good foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of caramel, orange, biscuit, nuttiness, toast, herbal, grass, and light earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good strength and balance. Taste of caramel, biscuit, toast, nuttiness, orange, herbal, floral, grapefruit, grass, and light earth. Lingering notes of caramel, toast, biscuit, nuttiness, herbal, and citrus on the finish for a good bit. Very well balanced with nice amount of toasty flavors. No cloying flavors on the finish at all. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with zero warming noticed on the finish. Overall this is a damn nice ESB! Very flavorful and well balanced; very smooth and drinkable. No complaints at all, really enjoyed this.

Two finger head on a cloudy amber with golden hues body and some lacing. Aroma is very mild with breads, barely and caramel malts. Flavor is also of breads and caramel with a slight tart fruitness which some ESBs overdue. Medium body that is a bit chewy with moderate to high carbonation. A decent and drinkable beer. Not very exciting and unidimensional.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours a roasted amber, with hints of honey gold, burnt orange, tan, ochre, and gold. A 1/4" head reduces to a skim and remains, with a decent amount of carbonation feeding it.

Smell is subdued toffee malt, with a bready malt bottom.

Starts with a smooth malt backbone, punctuated by a tangy, almost tart lemon bitterness. There's a grassy, almost herby taste that hits three-quarters of the way through the sip.The finish is dry, bitter, and again almost tart.

Light bodied, with enough of a bitter tang to keep it interesting. The tongue gets sticky as you work your way through this.

A decent enough brew, pleasant and east drinking, though I'm not much of a fan of this aftertaste.
