Stoudt's Double IPA, served cold, in a wide-mouthed brandy snifter. No freshness date on the bottle. A part of a mix-and-match sixer.

Pours hazy (I was careful not to dump in too much of the conditioning yeast). A warm tone of red-orange amber with a bright and fluffy off-white head. Very worthy lacing. Great head-retention, I might add.

I think this hop profile is that of Summit hops, which I having a liking for. A strong earthy citrus nose ripe with orange, grapefruit, and cherimoya. There's that 'onion' character in the smell that I don't particularly characterize as such, but I get it. Picked up the same in Founders Devil Dancer and Lagunitas Sucks. Caramelly malts lean to sweet in the bouquet with a buttery bread kind of smell. This one knocks off the socks! And, where's the 1.2 ounces of pure ethanol in here? Barely detectable!

Medium bitterness (mild at first, intensifies after the swallow), mild sweetness with some caramelized sugar and overripe pineapple; very resinous hops that start fruity (hint of sappy pine, as well, which washes away in an instant), quickly evolves into earthy, and flutters out with spice notes. The initial sip is really mellow and sweet with a layer of booze, and then the dank hops flash it all away. The finish has that unique Summit hop 'onion' note, and this time, it's not so pleasant. It's not off, just a muddy finish. This beer has some great complexity and character.

Mouthfeel is easy-going for such a big beer. Pretty smooth with a nice carb bite. Bushy and a little slick. The alcohol gets to you eventually along the way. More drinkable than I had expected.

I'm a fan. Love the nuances of different fruits that aren't obvious. I'm used to very big and very specific flavors of different citrus fruits, pine, flora, tropical fruits, etc. This DIPA tastes like hops and malt, and quality ingredients, at that. Only thing going against it is a not-so-clean finish. Will certainly buy again, and would consider to do so in bigger quantity.

I did not see any dates on this bottle, but I got nothing in flavor other than a slight fruity double IPA mixed with a strong sour style beer taste. (Vinegar is what really hit my palette from this beer, I was not satisfied at all, especially for a double IPA, but the alcohol presence was definitely strong. I poored it out after two sips, and I have never purposely wasted a beer before. Maybe I will try another just to be sure it wasn't an old beer, and if I get a better taste the next time, I will certainly update my review.

Undated bottle at 45 degrees into standard pint
Weak aroma of pine
Head average (4 cm), white, creamy with rocks, slowly diminishing to 2 mm layer
Lacing excellent, semi-continuous of primarily small bubbles coating the glass
Body medium orange, hazy
Flavor begins with a sweet alcoholic pineyness, which fades quickly to nothing. No diacetyl.
Palate medium, slightly oily, lively carbonation.

A mediocre DIPA, worth trying once. Possibly, like Fat Dog, better on tap than in bottles.
