Part of NEPA BC split #14.
I first had this beer on tap last year at Monk's and was blown away. I had it on tap again in Philly this year, and now I finally have it from the bottle. I actually don't think it drinks quite as well from the bottle as on tap, but this review is sort of a composite of my perceptions overall.
Pours a perfectly clear bronze/copper color with a good two inches of creamy, light ivory head. Keeps a solid lace and leaves a mess of stick. Awesome.
Smell has an underlying bready/slightly caramel malt sweet base, but is dominated by hops. Lots of pine and some grapefruit and citrus, too. Very nice.
Taste is much the same as the smell, with a bready, slightly sweet and lightly toasted malt base and then lots of hop flavor. Pine is the primary hop flavor, but there is some citrus too, and also some other indiscernible fruitiness. Moderate bitterness that gives some balance, but hops are mostly flavor.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, crisp and smooth. Very easy drinker.
This is an awesome beer, plain and simple. Try to fit it tightly into a style description (like doppelbock, as it's listed) and you're going to be disappointed. But drink it for what it is - an awesome, unique beer - and you can't possibly be.

Yeah, I liked this, but not nearly as much as I thought I would. Somewhat watery for a dopplebock I thought. Nice earthy and hoppy flavor up in the middle however. No real hint of the alcohol and not a whole lot of nose. This came recommended from the bartender, but I just wasn't that impressed. Had some nutty and woodlike notes, but overall, just not a lot of flavor. Nothing else really bad about it, the taste that was there was good.

A-Pours brown with dense, cushiony, white head. Head retains very well. Random lacing.
S-Hoppy but layered in its maltiness. Hops are green and grassy and the malt is toasty and caramelly. It's smells like a hopped-out Doppelbock. Maybe it's the yeast that preserves that Doppelbock personality.
T-Hops come on quite strong on the first half my first sip. Then, the maltiness and yeast character kicks in. After the pine agp d grassy and generically bitter hops wash over, the caramel and brown maltiness and unique yeast start talking.
M-Medium bodied. Quite bitter. Medium carbonation.
O-Smooth Hoperator is a very unique brew. A hoppy Doppelbock is a neat idea. Decently entertaining label as well.
