Had on tap at the Pickled Pig

A: Pours a hazy yellow with a nice white head, one finger in height. Decent retention, but minimal lacing.

S: Banana, citrus and grassy ops with a little bit of pepper and cloves.

T: The taste begins with some banana, wheat, and grassy hops. Underneath there is some bubblegum flavor and more spice, mostly cloves.

M: Medium bodied with lively/active carbonation.

O: A decent hefe that I would drink again, but would probably reach for something else.

Pours a hazy golden color with a thin head which gives way to some lacing. The aroma is of a wheat backbone with hints of banana and clove present as well as some spice. The taste has a nice wheat backbone and has banana, clove, and orange over the top. The mouthfeel is creamy and full bodied. Overall it is a solid hef, there is a good taste blend and a nice aroma. You could easily have a few of these.

Lots of yeast colonies in this beer. Quite cloudy as expected. Very modest head that levels off to a single layer of fine bubbles--leaves some fine lace that slides back to the liquid.

Traditional wheat aroma, practically begging for lemon for the less hip. Light amounts of corn in the background. Crisp.

More sweet than I expected. Good wheat presence, but not as strong as the smell would indicate. More round than crisp in the mouth--fairly thick body. Lightly sour. I'd love to see how I'd rate this one in a flight of hefe's.

A: Poured from a bottle to a weizen glass. Had a yellowish-brown color and a cloudy consistency. There was an inch of fairly long-lasting head and some good lacing.

S: Smelled of wheat, bananas, cloves and bubblegum.

T: Taste consisted of bananas, wheat, cloves and bubblegum - standard hefeweizen material. Had a slightly grating, acidic quality to it in the finish.

M: Highly carbonated with a smooth finish. Light-bodied.

D: This is a solid, but not exactly spectacular hefeweizen. Drinkable, though.

Poured into a hefe glass. Color was a slightly cloudy amber with a thick frothy head. Head didn't last very long, and left a very very thin head on top. Plenty of carbonation rising from the bottom. Aroma was floral, and slightly sweet. Taste was slightly olivey, but fairly pleasant. Felt good in the mouth, coated well, and wasn't overly watery. Pleasant to drink, went down well.

A - One finger of fizzy white head... Head quickly fades leaving only the slightest lacing... Loads of fast paced rushing carbonation... Pale straw color with an ever so slight orange hue...

S - Yeast... Lemon... Banana... Clove... Fairly textbook hefeweizen... Musky... Not overly complex...

T - Wonderful flavor... Much more complex than the nose would lead one to believe... Banana stands out amongst the lemon and clove... I'll swear there is also a slight hop component to this brew... Loads of pale malt also lend to the presence of some faint vanilla flavor...

M - Lots of carbonation, all with a very distinctive sharp bite... Dry... Medium bodied... Sturdy...

D - An interesting American take on the style... The flavor and mouthfeel are on the assertive side... Overall a very solid brew that I would gladly revisit in the future...

Appearance: Pale golden colour, visible carbonation, thin white head. Last few drops from the 120z bottle were completely made up of sediment that mesmerizingly swam down to the bottom of my weizen glass. By the time it all settles, it was rather cloudy.

Smell: Bready, strong yeast, light, and refreshing.

Taste: Surprisingly sweet upfront, notes of clove and banana. Of course, there is that lovely yeasty flavour all too familiar in hefeweizens.

Mouthfeel: A nice smooth feeling, light, refreshing, mild bite from the carbonation.

Drinkability: Smooth, light, refreshing, overall a decent brew. A little too sweet for my tastes, otherwise very good.

A pleasant surprise at Stew Leonard's in Paramus. Love the style, but can we trust Stoudts to offer up a delicious take on the beloved Bavarian Hefe? Let's find out...

Served in a traditional hefeweizen glass at between cellar and fridge temperature. Best by 9/18/09 lasered on the neck.

Appearance- Loaded with wheat malt and an abundance of yeast, this beer pours a dense, foggy gold with a sudsy three-finger crown. It's almost totally opaque, glowing from within. Minimal lacing leaves a patch here and there down the inside of the glass.

Smell- Phenols leap from the glass, carrying with them big aromas of banana, clove, and bubblegum... it's a rich, lush nose that really concentrates the ingredients in a big way.

Taste- As with the aroma, there is a tremendous phenol presence that distracts from the full, potential pleasure of all of the flavors here. The beer starts off with lush, grandiose bubblegum, banana bread, and clove before deferring to the phenolic character which follows.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Wow! The rolling, slick, and just-so-right seafoamy texture is perfection. It becomes, after a few seconds, liquid air... it's almost indiscernable as anything but fluidity. The big flavors and phenols would put me off just a little bit for more than one or two, but this is a solid example and a well invested $8.99 for the sixer.

12 oz. bottle with a memorable label poured a clear, gold and yellowish color until I swirled the last amount and poured it into the glass. The standard cloudy appearance with a short lived fluffy white head revealed itself.

This one is more subdued in aroma category. The clove-like, bubble gum and banana aromas come faintly to the fore.

The taste is sweeter than most hefewiezens I have tried, especially the imported ones. The sweetness tends to overpower the more subtle banana and yeasty flavors.

It lacks the spritzy character and refreshing flavor I have come to expect from this style. It is somewhat light bodied and flat.

It is still an enjoyable brew for the late summer. I simply would not recommend it as a great representation of the style. Not my favorite of the Stoudt family of beers.

Poured more so yellow with nice white head.

The smell was of zesty lemon.

The taste at first was on the lemon and herby side but as it warmed up more and more banana came through.

The body was a little lighter for the style.

Not a bad Hefe at all but it's getting to the point where they are all starting to taste very similar to me.

Poured into weizen glass:

Pours clouded golden with a rush of carbonated bubbles forming a one-finger white head, that pretty quickly goes to a thin cover. Minimal lacing sticks.

The smell is of banana/clove - banana really stands out - with doughy wheat.

The taste is of banana/clove with doughy wheat There is a tart, fruity zest. Tastes more like an American Pale Wheat Ale with a solid Bavarian Hefeweizen leaning. Malted, doughy, wheat, tart-ish fruitiness, with noticeable banana/clove mix together. It has a crisp finish.

It finishes crisp and clean with some creaminess, but also a fizzy edge. Quite smooth. (I was between two scores - a "second" of the two I had convinced me to give it the higher of the two scores).

This is a nice thirst-quencher. Not convinced that it's on par with some "classic" HW's - more of an APWA/HW, but does a fine job with that. Very easy to drink and refreshing!

A - Pours with one and a half fingers of white foam on top of a hazy, golden body. The foam settles at a moderate pace and leaves nice lace.

S - An aroma of clove, spicy wheat, vanilla and some light sulfur.

T - Thick, creamy wheat up front with a touch of acidity. Coriander, clove, and pepper in the middle with more wheat, spicy hops, and a touch of vanilla in the finish.

M - A thick, almost chewy body, moderately high carbonation, and a balanced finish.

D - Not bad, the thick mouthfeel is quite nice and while the yeast character is not the best it is still quite drinkable.

12oz bottle into weizen glass.
Pours a cloudy (yeast was swirled and added) yellow color with a modest head that shrinks rather quickly. Smells like a classic hefe. Bubble gum hits the nose first, then banana and clove. Palate follows the nose and is very enjoyable. Light bodied and very fluid. Overall a nice hefeweizen that stacks up well with alot of the German imports.

A: The beer poured hazy yellow in color with a white head that quickly disappeared. A light to moderate amount of carbonation is visible from the rising bubbles.
S: There are light aromas of bananas, bubble gum, cloves and wheat in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and is slightly sweet; no bitterness from the hops is evident.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate.
D: The beer is very easy to drink, thirst quenching and refreshing, and the low alcohol content makes it rather sessionable, particularly during the summer months.

Hazy straw in color wiht a puffy head like a marchmellow.

Strong banana and clove spice in the nose.

Loads of spice on the tongue with a creamy mouthfeel. Medium bodied and finishes spicy. Lots of carbonation. Just a tad of lemon zest in the flavor.

Very nice. Refreshing and quite drinkable. Huge spice character but it doesn't take away from the grainy/maltiness.

Stoudts is a relatively new brand of beer for me. This was a pretty good first pass at their brand.

I poured their beer into a hef style glass. There was only about a finger and a half of foam on this and it was really thin. The foam dissipated to nothing really quick.

This is a very good coloring for a hef, but the lack of foam does not exactly match the hef style.

Off the top I get the belgian yeast, and there was a decent amount of wheat smell off the top.

The flavor is very clean as well. I don't get bubblegum or banana from this beer. It is an interesting mix of hef and dubbel.

This was a decent beer. I enjoyed the opportunity to try this brand. I look forward to the next Stoudts.

12oz bottle pours into my glass a hazy straw yellow with golden highlights and a small bubbly head that quickly fades. Aromas of crisp wheat grain maltiness along with plenty of yeast esters. Hints of clove, pepper, bubblegum and some fruity banana notes as well. A little mellow overall.

First sip brings a crisp wheat malt body upfront that carries into spicy yeast tones. Lots of fruity esters with banana coming through most. Clove, pepper and bubblegum accents that flow down to a crisp clean finish. Tasty hefeweizen overall.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice crisp twang from the wheat and good spritzy carbonation. This one is refreshing and ends up going down easy enough. A solid hefe from Stoudt's that would be good drinking in the summer months.

A honey straw colored beer hazy and cloudy.
The head cap is short and dense but lingers on and on leaving fine lacing in its wake.

Aroma is of your typical wheat beer and is quite the same in this case. Malty with fine aromas of yeast banana and cloves.

Plenty of flavor here. Skads of banana and clove esters with a desent malt bill.

A smooth and somewhat thicker bodied beer here.
Soft on the pallette.

A good drinking beer. I had this without a lemon and it was super. a good beer from a worthy brewery.

I had been drinking some inferior Shiners today and so when I opened this and took a sip I was in heaven. This is a decent American wheat beer. Not so much authentic to German ones, but more flavorful as per American ones.

It's a bit harsh and strong tasting, but this one works. As with most Stoudts it is to be trusted na bought again. They are an example of what's right with American breweries.

Pours out with a thin, white head that dissipates almost immediately leaving behind no lacing. Its a thin, golden color with a little cloudiness to it. The aroma I am getting is mostly wheat with hints of fruitiness. The taste is mostly wheat up front that gives way to banana and spices before giving a malty finish. Its very smooth and easy to drink.

This is a nice beer. I'm not ordinarily a hefeweizen drinker, but this is appealing to me.

Pours a slightly hazy gold with 1 finger of white fizz that fades rapidly, leaving no lacing. Smells of banana, clove, wheat, and a touch of bubble gum. Tastes of lemon, banana, clove, honey, Belgian candy, green apples, and grainy wheat with a yeast and peppery finish. Medium to medium-light in body with some effervescent carbonation. Sweet with a crisp finish. Very easy to drink and quite refreshing, a good summer sessionable hefe.

At the expo.

Poured cloudy and hazy light golden with hardly any head. Hmm, this is different for a wheat I guess. At least the banana is pretty prominent though! Lighter notes of clove and bubblegum, but mostly banana and wheat twang. A solid hefe with a smooth and crisp mouthfeel. Nothing that offends the palate here. Will revisit.

12oz bottle served in a weizen glass.

Hazed yellow color with a bubbly white head that thinned out to a layer, no lacing.
Yeast and wheat, earthy smell.
Taste is somewhat sweet and malty with a lemon twist.
Medium bodied with crisp carbonation.
Easy to drink on a sunny afternoon.

note: I think this is the same recipie as their Weizen under a new name.

a: This was a cloudy sraw colored yellow, paler than most hefes. It was served to me with a big creamy white head that didn't last.

s: Big sweet wheat aromas with milder banana notes than most hefes. Very mildly spiced.

t: Much more sweet than spicy, but not at all cloying. Sweet, bready, wheat flavors with some banana flavor. The finish does have some faint peppery qualities.

m: I think was slightly under carbonated.

d: This isn't the best hefe around, but they did a pretty nice job with this one. I think Lancaster Brewing's is the best local hefe.

Being reviewed from notes, as I drank this a few weeks ago now. A 12 oz bottle poured into my weizen glass. This beer pours a clear (unlike most hefeweizens), medium golden color. It had a fluffy white head over an inch thick when poured. Settles to a nice surface coating and ring lining the inside of the glass. Aromas of malty wheat and a lemony zest are present. Has a sweet wheat flavor with definite lemon zest and a slight spiciness. The is also something else that is very distinct, I want to say it is grains of paradise but I am not quite sure. Has a slightly crisp, light to medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate to heavy carbonation. Easy to drink.
